View Full Version : Saving System Information Problem

I am having a problem with Acronis True Image and the tech people ask me to send them the System Information File.

I open: Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information and choose "Save". Gave it a name and clicked okay.

As you may be aware, the first screen is a "refreshing" screen. It shows a progress bar and the title of what it is refreshing. The progress bar gets about 95% through and stops. The title of what it is refreshing is not always the same. The main one it has stopped on many times is "List of Objects".

I have tried doing this in Safe Mode, Normal mode, going to Task Manager\processes and ending anything that had my id on it, going to msconfig and disabling everything, turned off Power Management and the Screen Saver time.

Thanks,
Sam

Every thing I have tried ends in the same way "Not responding".

I did try an Export and that worked. However, Acronis tech support wants an ".NFO" file, not a txt file.

Any suggestions? By the way, this is on my New System.

Sam,

I just ran the System Informatioin Save and it went through without any issues.

I would suggest turning off any firewalls, ad-blocking, popup blocking, and other programs that you have monitoring your system.

These are probably conflicting with the Info trying to get a snap shot of your system.

Dan:
Are you familiar with WinPatrol Plus? Using it, I disabled everything on the Startup tab. I also double checked by doing a msconfig and making sure anything under it's Startup tab was disabled.

Rebooted and tried saving the System Info FIle. Same results as before "not Responding". The Progress Bar looked like it was all the way up, no white space at end. The wording above the bar was on "Core Components".

AT that point, the disk activity light on the box stopped.I waited a couple minutes and then brought up the Task Manager. This is where it said "Not Responding".

Nope not familiar with WinPatrol - as I said, you have something that is resident that is stopping the nfo file from being created.

My system is setup (with the exception of antivirus) exactly the way you received your system Sam.

I have the webshots running, NERO/INCD running, atomic clock, printer monitor, admuncher, my Novell Client (for accessing my server), and AVG (NOT the freebie) loaded. This is ALL I run in resident on any of my systems.

Check your Add/Remove programs for toolbars and desktop searchers. They are always resident and updating which could effect the nfo file being created. EVEN if you disabled them in msconfig - many of these are activated again when the registry is ran.

Have you tried the report in Safe Mode?

Sam, Sounds like Windows is having a problem running the System Info app. Maybe it has other problems. Maybe that's why you're having a problem with Acronis' True Image. Since this is your new system, can you reload Windows?

Can you run Acronis TI from a startup CD? I like doing that because the computer boots from the CD and Windows is outta the picture.

After bringing up The System Information File and clicking on Save, there are 2 types of files.
1. System Information File.NFO
2. Version 5.0/6.0 System Information File.NFO

I have been using the first one (System Information FIle.NFO).This is the one that goes into the "NO Response")

I tried using the 2nd one (Version 5.0/6.0 System Information File.NFO) and it worked.

Anyone know the difference? I did a Google on it and got 0 results.

Rich:
It goes back to one of your post suggesting staying away from non-PS/2 keyboards.

I have a Logitech MX 700 Duo (cordless mouse and keyboard) that I WANT to use.

The problem: When I tried to test out the new Acronis Rescue disk, when it gets to the 1st screen where it asked (not the exact words) but do you want Full mode, Safe mode, or Windows, I have NO KEYBOARD or MOUSE control.

If I hook up a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, everything is fine. Again, I WANT to use the MX 700 Duo keyboard and mouse. In my mind, there is NO reason why Acronis or any other application has to only focus in on PS/2.

OK Sam but I have to tell you, I never use anything that is usb unless I have no choice. I buy external drives with the option of usb/firewire only so you should know the IoGear does both but that to me is a safety. If the printer is only usb I pass it. The only device I have that is usb only is a scanner and the only reason is because I cannot find a 1394 one under $450 and I use a scanner so sledom I won't pay that.
If I were you I would buy a usb/Ps2 adapter, and you may find one on an ols mouse you long since tucked away, and end all this...PS the rescue disk is strictly for emergencies, I do my restores from Windows normally now, and in an emergency, you drag out the Ps2 keyboard?
I had a problem with this Ms Media Pro keyboard where it would not allow pushing F8 to accept the agreement in an XP install and I got so sick of it I just put in a usb/ps2 adapter and the problem is over.

Rich:

I'll be back to you on this. I do have a usb/ps2 adapter. I want to try it.

The adapter worked. I ran the Rescue Media CD all the way into Acronis True Image. I had mouse and keyboard control on the MX 700 Duo.

After that, I booted normally and, again, have full mouse and keyboard control.

I am satisfied (for now) running this way because I don't need the PS/2 port right now.

That said, it doesn't relieve Acronis from finding the problem and fixing it.

At this point, we can say this problem is closed and fixed(temporarily). When and if I get a fix from Acronis, I will report on it.

Thanks,
Sam

Sam usb ports are the pits and before youi blame Acronis too much Microsoft has a bigger problem with XP installs that won't work with them.
That's one of the reasons I advise against Dell and gateway as their newer boxes don't have Ps2 ports and even if you don't use them, you need to be able to fall back on them.
There are no more frequent issues on the internet than usb ports. I would bet I see 15 a day on flash drives that aren't recognized and external drives that stopped working, and I have never seen one of those on firewire. Gusee that's one of the reasons the smart guys (Apple) rely on firewire and not usb for their peripherals.
