Attending: .... :grouphug: ....rbob (Kern), Dan, Photolady, Skip Cox, Al, Rich, Adam (Smokey), Annie, Rich (Mylanta), Rich's old friend Coyote, and I.

:cheer2:
Adam, KH Administrator finally graced us with his presence, a first for our Wednesday Night Computer Help Desk Paltalk chatroom. We congratulated him on his recent college graduation. Damn, he's smart! He'd make a nice son-in-law -- today a computer expert is probably more advantageous as a son-in-law than a doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief!

The usually prompt Rich (Mylanta) arrived late. He was using Vista, had audio problems, repeatedly went in and out, and finally switched to XP at 11:30.

Photolady, a great multi-tasker, was building a computer during the session.

Discussed:

New KH Forums - Programming and Vista

Vista
- 6 beta versions are available (home users will eventually use 1 and 2)
- Microsoft glimpse of eight Vistas http://news.com.com/2061-10794_3-6041613.html?part=rss&tag=6041613&subj=news
- Article by Paul Thurrott http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_editions_final.asp
- Cost for final home version should approximate $300, $99 for upgrade
- Vista is more stable, more secure
- Almost every feature is different (not necessarily better?)
- No one would trust total security of Vista to
MS!
- Rich found that Ghost, Acronis, NTI, WinPatrol would not install. AVAST AV works, as does Admuncher.
- IE markedly improved
- Media Player 11 is great
- good two-way firewall
- Paltalk/Vista audio issues

Al's Future Computer
- looking for sale on HP1540 (w/dual core processor, sophisticated and fast).
- considered difference in options for XP Home, Professional, and Media. XP Professional would facilitate logging into domain.

Password for Adm Account - In Home you can only access Admin in safe mode; in XP Pro during the setup it asks for a User

Nod32 and AVG (we never stop talking about AVs)

Bios passwords - still used, independent of O/S, also used as theft protection, mostly used on laptops

Java / Java Script - I needed an explanation of the difference. ....

Video Cards - Albatron and Jaton, both lesser known OEM cards

Keeping Teenagers off Computer

Rambus Ram - won battle, lost the war

Forgotten Paltalk Password - see https://commerce.paltalk.com/mpt/ControllerServlet?RequestId=MyPalTalk.ForgotPasswo rd

Network - we helped visitor CrowGallagher with questions about cable to connect two computers.

Until next week, ciao ....

Hey,
Thanks a ton Lina for transcripts from chatroom. They are very helpful, and offer me the chance to research each a little. You are really quite a blessing to this forum, Lina.

Auugh! Can't believe I missed Adam. Was that a cameo or should I expect him back next week?

We hope Adam will try to participate in Paltalk every week. Nice guy. Good sense of humor. And smart!

Terry, it's my pleasure to provide the weekly summary and welcome greetings. Brings back memories of my working days as a secretary, except that here I don't make and serve coffee (I lied, it was always decaffeinated); conspire with your wife to keep you in good health; have Tums, aspirin, and Tylenol available for you; secretly correct/edit your correspondence; lie to upper management to protect you; etc.....and, yes, I asked a lot of dumb questions, which sometimes prevented catastrophes.

I hope you all feel free to offer any suggestions about the weekly summary.

Keeping Teenagers off Computer

Bios passwords - still used, independent of O/S, also used as theft protection, mostly used on laptops
But how secure are they?

Rambus Ram - won battle, lost the war
True. It's quick, but too expensive. :(

Thanks for providing the summary, I'll try to get on eventually but I have to work late again Wednesday.

Pi, why not start a thread on this? We could use some insight from members of the X-generation.

A new thread on this could generate a good discussion, especially for those who can't attend our Wednesday night Paltalk sessions.

You're welcome, Pi. We appreciate the contribution to the KH forum your posts here have made and look forward to the Wednesday night you can eventually join us in our Paltalk chatroom -- in the meantime, feel free to start new threads about these subjects.

But it took 5 years and DDR2 before I had ANY system access even anywhere close to my RAMBUS systems. I am actually still using those systems since DDR2 is only marginally near their performance. In fact, I had to go to a 955 Extreme Intel mbd, Dual Core 3.0 ghz processor, and DDR2 - 667 memory to be faster than my 2.8ghz, 1gb 1066 RAMBUS box.

Could you imagine the speed IF RAMBUS had won the war too! RAMBUS is producing 5ghz ram and greater now. Used mostly in game boxes. Mbd would have 3ghz FSB, on their architecture. Those systems would be lightening fast!

Gamers would be going nuts trying to keep up with one of those bad babies!

Dan,
DDR2 isn't even utililizing it's potential yet and in fact adds nothing to what you are feeling. You are comparing everything to a world of Intel, and Intel was sicker than sick throughout this whole time period. Use 2 or 2.5 cas latency 3200 Ddr ram with an Amd X2 cpu, and it will blow the doors off of that 955 or anything Intel has yet produced, though the Conroe dual core should begin the return of the balance to Intel for however long.
You still don't get why I am on Amd dual core now and it started with Amd XP Barton cpu's blowing away Prescott socket 478's like they weren't even there with any amount of ram. My 3.4 Prescotts with 1 gig of DDR Corsair XMS (not the cheap stuff) was like a "turtle" compared to a refurb mobo Gigabyte board with Barton 2800 (I think 2.0 Ghz cpu) and Elixir "junko" 1 gig 3.0 cas latency ram that I threw together out of junk laying around, to use as a bench machine. I thought I was losing my mind when I perceived that, and that is why I went over to Amd. I had them side by side.

I NEVER thought that I would hear Rich promoting AMD as much as he is. He used to be the largest Anti-AMD promoter I have ever seen!

You never thought it, imagine how I feel!!!! But fair is fair and no matter what I felt, I will always try the other way and in this case my eyes were open and the difference was so damn obvious. You know that same sensitivity can also swing me back...
