Not sure I am in right forum, if not perhaps a moderator will correct me.

I recently received A LOT of help in the XP forum and my post was titled "Excuse my first boring visit" and since the post, I have reformatted and touch wood, all is well.

Well almost.....I have a problem with recognition of my card reader in a USB port.

Since format, my card reader was not recognised so I reloaded driver from cd and noticed it was for w98 which meant, I think that I bought/installed/used whilst still using w98.

I must add, that I also used it until format on my XP Home o/s for a long time. I guessed that reformat made it obsolete so I bought a new one yesterday from Jessops, a well respected photo shop and these are the facts. The only other suspect is that I have just bought a new XD H memory card.(but it works)

1--The USB ports mentioned do work by testing my memory stick in them.
2--There are pics on the memory card
3--I can see the pics in camera window.
4--I viewed the pics in shop using one of their readers, same as one I bought.
5--I connect the camera+card into tv with cable and viewed them.

I attach a couple of p/s if it helps, two are error messages during my time trying to fix. In anticipation of you asking, I did a p/s of device manager and you will see the yellow ? re Epson. I have just re-installed printer driver and done another p/s.

Right now things are pointing to the card reader. Have you tried it on another machine? Take your reader to the shop and see if it works with your card on their machine.

Just a note: XP shouldn't require a driver for the card reader. It's built into the system. Well, I haven't heard of any card reader needing an XP driver.

A bit more info for you as I have just returned from shop.

1-they inserted my old reader into their uSB port and told the same as me "insert disk".

2-They inserted my xd card into their reader and it said"disk needs formatting" which I assume meant card but we did'nt as it deletes the pics I assume.

3--as I said in post, the SAME card was checked in their shop yesterday and it showed pics.

As I novice, I think my pc or ports are/have corrupted "something" so a brand new card with pics will not display. So any expertise you have may be able to fathom out if you agree with me.

The file table on the disk was probably corrupted.
Can you chkdsk it?

This is strange. The card worked at one time at the shop, then didn't work on your machine, now it's not working at the shop either. However, it works in your camera because you can view the pix. Is this correct? Can you still see the photos on the card when it's in the camera?

A change since my reply...I have just put card in camera and I could NOT see pics anymore, it came up with Card Set up Power Off or Format. Power off got me nowhare so I scrolled to format/yes/it now shows "card Error".

Just tried in tv and thats no good

Dbarrow

Do you mean do a start/run/chkdsk?

Sounds like your the card is being corrupted when you connect it to your computer. Don't know if the card reader is doing this or the computer itself. Did you see any message on the computer about formatting the disk?

I have just inserted card reader in USB, inserted xd card into card reader and got the same message "insert disk into e drive" same as my p/s.

Maybe the card has failed, maybe the computer is corrupting it. I'd like to see you format the card, but you'll lose anything that may be on there. Do you have another card to try in your reader? If so, format it and see how it works. That may narrow us into the cause - the card reader, the card, the camera, or the computer.

This is what happens

insert card in camera
open lens to take pic
card setup
2 choices
power off>>which simply does what it says
format
I h/lite format
c/o ok
yes or no
c/o yes
it says "caution erasing all" and yes/no options
I dont think it is actually erasing until next choice
c/o yes
back to 2 choices power off/format

Well, your camera doesn't recognize that there's anything on the card. If your photos are important, you might be able to recover them with a program like BadCopy Pro.

If there's nothing on the card that you care to keep, then reformat it using the camera.

I am not worried about the pics

I have formatted using camera as mentioned in last reply.

I now cannot take a photo.

It still does not explain problem

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you reformatted the card. Do you have another card? The one you have may be bad. Afterall, you formatted it with the camera and it still isn't working. I would think the camera would have said that it couldn't format the card. So I'm confused here.

Best to try another card.

Thanks for your time on this but a--I dont have another card and b) I would not put one in camera or reader until I know more for the same problem will happen I am sure and I say that as a novice.

I only bought the card 2 days ago.

Just did a google for xd memory card format or similar, this may interest you.

the type M and type H XD cards are pain in the ***. Before with the standard type i had no problems. I bought a 1 gb type card i've been using it for 1 month smoothly until i used a card reader the voila it got corrupted so watch out also for those card readers. you should use the camera to transfer you data, it's much safer.
Now i manage to format the card in my olympus c 770 but i guess that it did more damage than good. Any suggestion?

Sorry, but at this point, I don't know what to do. Seems those cards and maybe others can be problems sometimes. Wish I knew more.
