Hi Guys
A while ago, I got some good advice here about getting a telephone windows activation.
The reason I needed it was because I had reformatted and re-installed a couple of times.
Anyway it all worked out ok but this morning I have a star in my System tray with a warning?

Must be the Windows Genuine Activation program that installs with Windows Update. You probably have to call or e-mail Microsoft again and explain what happened.

There are many threads here pertaining to WGA that include fixes, alternatives, work arounds, etc.
You may wish to review them all.

Try searching on "genuine". I tried searching on "WGA" (appears earlier in this thread) and got no hits. :frown:

The WGA search does not yield results but "Genuine Advantage" shows a number of posts, most in the XP forum.
gudda96, you have obviously loaded the WGA with automatic updates.
Many of the articles I have read recently are indicating a very high "false positive" result.
If you have a valid install, you can either spend the time on the phone with MS or seek out the advice in the articles on how to disable it and the nag screen. It can be rid from your machine, with a little work.

It still has to be on to receive Windows updates. If it's disabled, the updates and some other software won't install. I think a call to MS is pretty much the only option.

Hi Guys
I may be guilty of running 2 posts here, apologies in advance.
I have just contacted MS licence and he blinded me with science and the long and short of it was 3 options.
1-try to sort it out online, which I have tried and had a diagnostic tool done and in the printout it says genuine.
2-contact the manufacturer of pc as the should provide the support as they supplied the licence.
3-contact ms support at £47 per hr.
I have taken various p/s

Try to activate it and choose telephone activation, that is where you will get the toll free phone number....if you can no longer try activation you can reach it from Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Activation.

The WGA pop up in ST is not there today? I was about to ring MS and use up my last free phone call so I will leave it for the moment.
As I said, I did their MGA Diagnostic Tool test and it clearly states Genuine and shows my licence number.
Thanks guys for your help.

Does anyone know how to backup the activation data before format/reinstall?
I think learning how-to accomplish that would be a good idea!

I cant claim the credit for this as I got it from another forum.
I have not done it yet so dont know if it works, perhaps you would report back if it does.
Open `My Computer` double click your drive with the OS on it, double click `WINDOWS` look for `system32` and double click it. In the window that opens go a long way to the right (nearly to the end if viewing in `list`) and look for a file titled `wpa.dbl` right click it and select `Copy`. Save this copy to another hard drive/floppy/CD or wherever its safe and not on the same partition/drive as your OS.
It is always better to save this file on a medium such as a floppy/CD/external drive as if your boot drive fails or you need to reinstall you will lose it.

That was an open ended question to find out if anyone here knowns how-to back up their Activation data.
I was going to create a thread and post instructions.
I guess I can do that!
