Hello there
I would like to know if anyone else has or is getting ready to set a interoffice email server. I am using ArGoSoft mail server right now and would like to find a better program to use here. I would love to use the SBS we have here but the powers that be do not want email or My Company web site running.
Any help or Suggestion are Welcome and will be Apprectiated.:)

* you need to download Paltalk messenger 8.3 software first if you don't already have Paltalk on your system.
In the chatroom you can receive or give one-on-one, hands-on help for computer problems, alert us or learn about new developments in computers and software. Computer subjects get first priority. If there is a lull, then humor, finance, and whatever can be discussed intermittently. We try not to talk about politics or religion .... there's enough disagreement about antivirus scanners. LOL

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO HAVE AN EMAIL SERVER ON-SITE? ? ?
I have several clients running mail servers - and the spam box is always a mess! Linux has some of the best email configurations since it is easily manageable and usually is a dedicated server allowing for the "main" server to not get over whelmed with the intrusions that broadcast email can cause. SBS has a limit that usually has to result in clearing the BadMail folder on a weekly if not daily basis. I have a client that was getting close to a gig of badmail a week and would halt all incoming emails until we cleared the badmail box. They altimately decided to let their ISP handle their emial and now they have so fewer issues with the server.
GroupWise from Novell (WHICH WILL run on Windows by the way) is a better managed email app - it can actually be set to do it's own housekeeping during the "down" hours and clear out unwanted emails. It also is nice that if you set it up to do reverse lookup it doesn't even accept the emails at all into the wphost.db database.
Of course, it is almost a necessity for you to make sure that your IP provider configure your domain with reverse lookup before you configure your email server.

Hello
This is going to be a local server with no internet access; we have had too many workers goofing off on the web, but still need a way for them to know what’s going on in the office. I did get the Argosoft server working with "name"@stjohncourt.local in outlook, but I am sure this is not the best way for me to handed this. Maybe what I need is a way to share messaging and Calendar with my office. You are right about not wanting the headache of running and repairing an email server.

hetzer,
You might want to look at GroupWise - it comes in several flavors. Linux, Novell, and Windows versions with user licenses. It will allow for just in-house communications. It has proxy services that allows the manager, owner, etc, etc, to attach to any user that has been proxied and view their emails, edit their calendars, add tasks and projects, and view any documents in their email db.
You would just have to configure the POA (Post Office Agent) and MTA (Mail Transport Agent) for interoffice. IF in the future you want to expand the emails - then you just configure the GWIA (GroupWise Internet Agent) and you are on your way.
The nice thing is that GroupWise is seamless once invoked. You are almost getting a RONCO product - Set It and FORGET IT.

Is there any way to get in-house communication on a peer to peer network? Email or messaging?

Dale,
I have not found anything that conveniently shares on the peer to peer environment. Outlook can "share" but it only allows one access at a time to the pst/ost files.
NOW on my systems with the latest Lotus Organizer I have found that I can have the same database open at the same time on several machines and it does share a calender, address book, and tasks. BUT Organizer is just what it describes - an Organizer (think of the old Daytimers). And that is utitlizing it as on a peer to peer even though the database resides on my Novell server. (Previous versions of Organizer did not allow me to open it up more than once).
One of the things you have to remember is that Server OSes are geared with record locking vs the database locking on Workstation OSes. This is why the Server versions are usually designed (and MORE expensive) to allow the SQL interface to accomplish the record locking.
Now on custom programming like Sam does in VB - you can designate record locking in the variable settings (I can't remember exactly what the true name is - but it is defined in the header core).

Look at MS OneNote program.
It has many "sharing" capabilities and integrates with many other MS products, Word, Excel, etc.. Real time "whiteboard" functions and many other features.
Daughter has found many uses for this and although I have not really explored it ... just too kewl!
If you have a particular need for it, I can refer you to her as she is becoming quite the expert with it.

this (http://www.howtoforge.com/virtual_postfix_mysql_quota_courier) is a brillaint guide, you can skip the anti-spam stuff if you want though. However I have one strong warning: If you follow it word for word then your users will be able to send E-mail from any address provided they authenticate with their real username and password (if they ever figure that out).
I tried fixing that myself but it didn't work, hopefully I'll get help watch this (http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5863) thread on the howtoforge forums.

Perhaps I didn't clarify properly, or I'm just in over my head on this one- but I'm looking to setup in house email or messaging or both on a peer to peer network; in order to have user 1 send an email or message to user 2. An intranet email setup, if you could call it that.
Doug,
I'd be quite glad to learn anything I could about OneNote. I'm curious what the whiteboard feature is all about.

Dale, go to the onenote home page for info and demo. 6 month trial dl.
http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/default.mspx
Quite an interesting program with many abilities integrated with other Office products and other Windows programs.
Don't forget something INCLUDED in XP ....
Net Meeting
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/netmeeting/
This easily satisfies your IM, whiteboard, and other intraoffice needs.
Little known and rarely used, it has been bundled in XP from the start.
Fred and I experimented with it quite a bit a few years back and found it has many capabilities.
Just one of those things you have to have a need for or you never notice it.
Combine and setup these two programs to your needs and I think you can cover many of them.

Does NetMeeting work inside a peer to peer network, Doug? My use would be in a ptp that is not connected to the Internet.
