Good MORNING, KH!! Do I sound like Robin Williams? No? No wonder. Last night was far from a Vietnam battlefield -- very quiet, although we consistently ran neck-and-neck with two rooms tied for third place.
Please don't fire me! (I need the pro bono work.) I showed up late (9:30 pm) having fallen asleep watching TV, waiting for our room to open up. ...... Made up for it, however; detective linux and I closed the room about 11:45.

* Firefox update 1.5.0.5 - important security update, notification when you open Firefox, your input required.
* Difference between an update and a definition file
I had posted this, http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3025&highlight=Firefox and asked what the difference was between a Spybot update and Spybot definition file.
Tortanick's answer to my post makes sense to me; i.e., an update changes how spybot works; a definition file is just a list of the spyware for which it scans.
I think downloading the definition file using the Firefox browser confused me (doesn't take much) because there was also a Firefox update in the mix at the time.
* Minimized Firefox Windows
Loop and I have experienced these (a tiny window shows up in the upper-lefthand corner of the desktop). Loops gets them daily; I don't get one very often. Once I maximize the first one, it stops for me but not for Loop.
We are waiting to see if the new Firefox update resolves this minimized-window phenomenon.
* Vista
Rich became so frustrated with Vista that he deleted it from his system. He was disgusted with IE beta 7, among other things.
Vista has service pack which can cure Rich's problems.
After Dapper Dan's expert input, Rich will try again, thankful he made an image file of Vista and probably can restore it. See! You never know when an image file will come in handy!
Windows Mail replaces Outlook Express http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/features/forhome/mail.mspx#more
It does not seem popular with our crew.
* W2000 Pro, Sharing a Drive
Elliot couldn't share HD; no tab to create share.
Dan suggested he right click on the Network Places, right click on the LAN, and install. He'd see that File and Print sharing as an option to add to the network properties.
It worked! Hail to Chief Dan!
* Keeping Work Station and Server Started
The computer of one of Photolady's business customers has problems keeping Server and Workstation started.
He has to turn these services back on each day in order that the other computers see the drives on the server/workstation. He's using XP Pro.
Dan advised her to make sure that the power options is NOT allowing hibernate or powering off the hard drives. Also, you can have the screen blank - but all other hardware should be "active" since the other workstations are accessing it "on demand" and if the system is set to power down the hard drive - the delay will disconnect the drives.
Photolady, let us know if Dan's advice solved the problem! He's competing for the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
* Member Email Addresses and Notifications
Ray gets Paltalk alerts to one of his email addresses, post replies to another. We gotta get Adam (Smokey) to work on the Member List.
* Paltalk Profiles
They are all screwed up. Some of us are listed as joining yesterday, some July 5th. Photo image missing for one member (but that may have occurred when he upgraded to 8.3 version after a lapse of several months).
* Water-Damaged Laptop
We discussed the water-damaged laptop Ray wants to fix, he keeps hearing beeping: http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2982
Dan advised that the mainboard is fried at the ribbon connector. The keyboard and "monitor" don't have plugs, but small "grips" that clamp the ribbon to the mainboard interface. There is no protection around them.
Ray pulled the keyboard, and we had a few drumrolls. He came back to tell us that it did the trick..... it worked!....but he's still wondering why only a floppy would let him log in before keyboard was disconnected
* Physx Card
C-Cain, a gamer, wanted information on this. Unfortunately, our gaming expert Doug Barrow wasn't there to chime in. We directed C-Cain to our KH forum; hope he joins.
Pi rules told him it's dedicated physics processor that performs physics calculations instead of the graphics processor or main processor. Ageia makes them. Here's the url: http://www.ageia.com/physx/
Pi rules also provided an url for a list of some games optimized for it: http://www.ageia.com/physx/titles.html
* Antivirus Combos
We discussed this on our forum here: http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3058
I proposed a combo of AOHELL, McAfee, and Norton, and maybe any new security software MS develops!
.....hope to see y'all in our Paltalk chatroom next week.
Ciao, Lina
