Hi Guys
I know how to make a collage in Picasa but I cannot move the pics around to my satisfaction.
Someone said you can copy pics into Word and it might be easier to do, any ideas??

George:
In Word, you can do the following:
Paste your pictures into Word, and then click on one of the pictures. When you click on it, a Picture toolbox should appear (if not, right-click the picture > Format Picture > click Layout > select Tight).
In the Picture toolbox, click on this icon: http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/8797/iconpi3.jpg and select Tight. Do this to each picture and you should be able to drag them wherever you want.

Why does this always happen? I should be able to do just as you say buttttt
I believe there is an argument to whether you should insert or copy/paste, but I tried both.
inserted/pasted pic/c/o pic/the movable squares appeared/no toolbox/???
BTW, I should have made clear, when I say a collage, I want to be able to move on top of each other like Picasa, its just that Picasa wont let you move them.

Shift+Insert, Ctrl+V, right-click > Paste... it's all the same.
the movable squares appeared/no toolbox/???
The issue is that the toolbox does not appear, correct?
As said in my previous post, you could instead right-click on the picture, click Format Picture, click on the Layout tab, select Tight, and click OK.
However, if you want to be able to use the Picture toolbox, right-click on a picture / on white space in Word, and you should have the option to "Show Picture Toolbar" (the attachment is a picture of the toolbar).

I think what you want to do is to right click the pix, format, layout, but don't choose Tight, choose either 'in front' or 'behind' text.

Hi You Guys
Sorry for delay, tried your tips and it looks good but I need to fine tune it yet.
Do you know if the pics can be slanted in a fan situation?

If you click on a photo, you'll get resize handles on each side and corner. Use them to resize. Also take note of the green handle that will appear just above the picture. Grab this to rotate the photo.

First click on the image in Word, and you'll see the squares around the edges. When you select Tight, you'll see these squares change to circles. At the very top you should see a green circle; click on this, and then rotate it whatever way you'd like:

George:
What version of Word do you have? Microsoft Office Word 2003?
... ...
You may have tried this several times already, but I'll just go over the steps one more time for you, see if you missed anything:
1. Open Word
2. Paste picture into Word
3. Right-click on picture and select Format picture
4. Click the Layout tab
5. Select Tight
6. Click OK
7. Click and drag the picture where you want it on the screen
8. Click and hold the green circle above the picture, rotating it whichever way you want to
Hopefully if you go over it one more time, it will work. Here (http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/2047/stepstm7.png) is an image I quickly made (sorry if it's confusing) that you can refer to when going through these steps. Good luck!

Ray (thats easier)
I have tried everthing you said but
A) c/o tight does not move the pic
b) c/o Behind or In front of text DOES move the picture.
c) Take my word, there are NO circles, only empty squares.
d) There are 8 squares but nothing on top, only one of the 8.
e) I can move pic ok, I can add pics ok, I can plave pics behind/in front of other pics.
f) the only thing I can do is angle them
g)BTW, I have Office 2000

George:
Are you able to see the drawing toolbar (if not, right-click on the picture and you should have the option to "Show Picture Toolbar")?
In this toolbar, do you see an icon similar to this: http://www.fgcu.edu/support/office2000/word/images/freerotate.gif ? If you do, click on it and then the green handles around the image should appear.
If it's not in the toolbar, try going to Tools > Customize > Commands tab > under Categories, click Drawing > under Commands, drag Free Rotate to the drawing toolbar.
Select Free Rotate from the toolbar and click on the picture (it has to be formatted, e.g., behind/in front of text) and see if you can rotate it with the green handles now.

I have now done all you said, it was not on toolbox so went to tools etc and dragged icon to into toolbox BUT it is greyed out UNLESS I leave the customize window there.

It will be greyed out unless you have formatted the picture (e.g., tight/in front of/behind text). Let me know if using Free Rotate does the trick ;)

When you say "formatted" the picture, its the past tense, I do c/o pic and do the behind/in front/tight etc and can move them but the wheel is still greyed out in toolbox where i dragged it.

I noticed that my Mac version of Word behaves differently than the version on my XP machine. So maybe it's different in Ray's version also.
I had to click on the picture, and the chose the Rotate icon on the picture toolbar. Once I did that, the corner handles changed from hollow black circles to green filled circles. Grag any green corner handle and the pix rotates.

Using Picasa2, I just created a collage using 1 pic at a time in a 'pile.' I kind of liked the little frame, sizing, and perfect rotation that Picasa did. Then I took my best 3 pics into PhotoElements for positioning and added the other desired pics. But of course, you could go to Word as has been outlined in the rest of this thread.

As said in my post, I can make a collage in Picsa but you dont have any control to how the pics " form" themselves and a head may be cut off.
Since post, and with help, I have learned to make a collage in Word and this does give you more control on moving the pics.
All I have to overcome now is how to use the tool for tilting the pics, the tool on my set up is greyed out so thats the problem I am working on at present.

George, is the image formatted? What are you trying to rotate (could you attach the picture)? "Free Rotate" may/may not be greyed out, depending on what you're working with.

This is what I do>>>>>>>>
open word
insert pic 1
insert pic 2 etc etc
r/c on pic
format pic
text in front or text behind or tight all seem to give me same option.
that option is to put one pic in front or behind each other and move them around
I cannot tip them and the tip tool is greyed out?

I agree that Picasa is limited and I also get heads cut off, but if you create a collage of ONE picture at a time, you get an immediate effect that you cannot easily duplicate in Word.
Then in Word:
Insert Pictures (Collages of One) into Word
Select pictures one at time
Format Picture menu or right-click
Layout tab
Select 'In Front of Text'
Now in Word you can move and free rotate
See my partial Alaskan Collage in Word from Picasa:
http://www.freeholdcomputer.com/images/Alaska/collage.doc
Check the format|layout. Check Draw | Free Rotate
If still dimmed then there might be a version issue with Word. My collage was created with Word 2002.

Fred
Thanks for that, it took me further than I was, let me go over it again.
open Picasa
choose 1 pic
hold
collage
create
copy
open word
paste
now have a "tipped" pic as one would have in picasa
open picasa again
repeat above
now have 2 pics"tipped" in word
r/c--format pic--layout--in front of text-play around then save

Its a bit difficult to do as it is done in word and I cant save it as an JPEG as I normally would do in Irfanview, then resize.
If I try to attach it as a word doc it is too big for KH.
Only way I know is to send to another e-mail address.
If you tell me what you are trying to do, I may suggest something different.
From what I gather, I cannot tip my own pics in Word because I cannot rotate as tool is greyed out. Even if you received my attachment and did it, it would not change my situation, yeh?
As you will see in my reply to Fred, it did work using his prompt.
Should I try attachment in image shack??

George:
You could continue on using Fred's method, but if you would still like to "pursue" Free Rotate...
Its a bit difficult to do as it is done in word and I cant save it as an JPEG
You don't need to do this, but just for future reference: you can copy the picture in Word and then paste it in Paint (Start > Run > mspaint.exe); then, if there's any white space, just resize it so only the picture is shown. When you save the picture, from the Save As type drop-down box, you can select from picture file formats like JPEG.
If you tell me what you are trying to do, I may suggest something different. ...Should I try attachment in image shack??
You could try ImageShack; however, what I would like to know is this: Are the images in picture format, e.g., .bmp, .png, .jpg, .gif, .tif? i.e., When you copied the images into Word, what were their file formats?

I probably will try both, eg Fred/Picasa and "our" method once tweaked.
Re your>> Start > Run > mspaint.exe), thats just the same result as start/progs/paint is it not. Either way, of course, you have reminded me of the obvious way to convert a .doc to jpeg.
Are the images in picture format, e.g., .bmp, .png, .jpg, .gif, .tif? i.e., When you copied the images into Word, what were their file formats?
Whilst in Picasa, they are jpeg, then after saving in Word, they became .doc but this will change now as I will save in Paint and convert to jpeg.

Have done copy/paste from Picasa to Word, one at a time.
copy/paste to paint
Saved as jpeg
Resized in Irfanview
So now you have your subject matter

Yes, it is the same.
Have done copy/paste from Picasa to Word, one at a time.
copy/paste to paint
If you're just using Picasa/Word as Fred suggested, you can disregard this ;)
If you're still not able to use Free Rotate, I think the best thing to do would be to paste the picture directly to Paint, get rid of any white space if any, and save the image as a picture file (e.g., .jpg, .gif, and the like). Then, open Word, go to Insert > Picture > From File > find the image > click Insert > format the image (when formatting, make sure you do not choose "In Line with Text") > click on the image > attempt to use Free Rotate.
If this also does not work: This may/may not apply to your image, so it's of no concern if these options are also greyed out: right-click on the image (after it is formatted) > select Grouping > click Ungroup > right-click on the image > select Group > click on the image > select Free Rotate.
If this does not solve your problem, I don't know what else to tell you. I don't have Word 2000 so what you're using may be different; in this case, your best bet would be to continue with Fred's method.
Good luck with the collage,
Ray

Hmm. I see most of you are doing copy and paste into Word. I don't remember, but I think in Word 2000 your resultant bitmap can't be rotated as it can in Word XP and 2003. I recommend Insert | Picture | From File. If any of you have tried this in Word 2000 both ways, let us know.

I have done all you say but rotate and Grouping greyed out so I am guessing that Word 2000 does not have these options. Between using Picasa with its limitations and what Fred suggested, I will make do I think, I probably would only do the odd collage anyway, thanks again for your valiant efforts.

I wonder if we SAVE AS web (HTML) in Word and insert pic into KH if that will work? Will KH accept .htm(l) files?
