Most or all new pc's don't come with floppy drives, I see this as being outdated, why would someone wish to purchase a floppy for a "new" pc?

In case:
- you have a pile of floppies with needed information on them?
- you need to know how to load them and play them should you have clients with floppy-drives or floppies that won't work?
- floppies may be more durable than cd's?
Don't know. Just wondering!

- Many users (myself included) have a variety of documents, backups, software, etc saved on floppy's. Rather than copy these files to another media, it is easier to add a FDD which is now a minimal cost addition.
- A floppy system diskette is the quickest, easiest way to boot a computer that will not boot from the HDD (normally C: drive)
- A floppy diskette is a quick reusable storage device for small files.
- Many of us have a vast reserve of blank media from the great AOL marketing campaign of a few years ago. :D

Reason I asked is becuase a friend of mine wants to buy a pc for her sons and is asking if she should get a floppy? Since she doesn't have any floppy dics I am thinking a floppy drive will be of no use to her, I have read your reasons why guys but I still don't think this is necessary, for her, what do you think?

fdd's are not necessary, but as Terry mentioned one can easily add a fdd if the need arises.

Yes, I think makes sense, since the FDD is an optional accessory, might be best for my friend to get the pc without it and and she can always purchase a FDD at anytime if needed, thanks all!

OTOH for the $20 that Dell charged me (last year) to have it installed before delivery, its a small price to pay for an emergency boot device.

Self install of floppys is very easy, personally I wouldn't get one and wait untill its needed, then zip down the shop.
