Can I put an IDE HDD in an enclosure and make an external unit that will run via USB? Thanks.

IF the BIOS supports booting from USB - then it will attempt it depending on the pecking order of your booting devices.

No one mentioned booting from the unit, I think the question is can you make an external hard drive from an ide drive and the answer is yes buy buying an external case...they have the conversion chipsets in them.
