Hi

My son is using MSOffice 2003 Basic Edition. Would anyone know where the address book is located? There are no .pab files in my computer. Is it part of the .pst file now?

He has just signed up for on-line backup and would like to make sure that his address book is one of the files that is saved.

Thank you!

Vivienne

Vivienne,

The address book is .wab / .wa~ for the Windows Address Book. Are you sure you looked for the right extension?

Hi Dan

Vivienne,

Sorry, I forgot to say *Outlook*. I believe that is the extension for Outlook Express. My Outlook 2000 uses .pab. I googled and think I found that Outlook 2003 no longer used .pab but was part of .pst but now I cannot find where I read it. :-(

In Widows XP, it's normally somewhere in c:Documents and Setting/<user name>/

From the Start menu, select Search and search all files and folders for *.pst

I can find .pst with no problem. Is that where the address book is? In past programs, it was a separate file with the extension of .pab Is it now part of .pst?

Thanks!

Hi Lina

What a nice welcome! :-) I really enjoyed joining you on KH Paltalk on Wednesday. You're a great group!! Interesting, knowledgeable, fun, helpful, compassionate and I could go on. :-) Someone is going to lend me a mic for next Wednesday so you don't have to put up with my typing.;-)

See you there!

Vivienne

P.S.
Lina:
Re: Spam control - I know that this was dismissed at the KH help on Wednesday, but please try Mailwasher - I think they have a free 30 day trial. You read your messages on the server. You can either have it mark your spam messages for deletion or have it deleted. It catches them all as you teach it what to mark. I think you will like it. I would feel compromised without it. And the rest of the messages (the legitimate ones) go to your OE. (or whatever program you use.)

Rich: I've told qldit the time difference - the KH paltalk thing is Thursday 11 am his time - I think. He is going to try to be there next week. His only problem is he can't get to that website on Linux. LOL!

He may have been kidding, I'm not sure. In any case he does have Windows on on one or two of his machines.

Why does he need an online b/u? Extensive or even non-extensive use of OL can bloat the .PST file to well over several 100 MBs.

Is he part of a network using Exchange Server or is this a standalone?

Outlook 2003 has made several changes affecting the file structure and the address book [Dan and I had discussed this issue here about six months ago, but I cannot find references in my search]. I personally had trouble attempting to convert and restore a .PST file from OL2002 to OL2003.

I suggest that your son check the info here:

1) Help | Address Book | File Locations

2) For Adminstering/Network issues: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841273.

He can also go here for a straight forward OL backup add-on:
3) http://snipurl.com/2gec

ALWAYS test your restore BEFORE you actually need it.

Hi Fred

Why does he need an online b/u?

He has a home office and it would be quite disasterous if he lost his data. So we thought that if were online we would have protection against fire and theft. As well as doing that, we are making daily ghosts alternating two externals, we have ordered an 8 GIG (his files now total 3.5 GB) memory stick that has password and overwrite protection, which he will wear around his neck always. This will also have the added advantage of his being able to use his laptop whenever he is at court or away on holidays without needing to network. Security is of a great concern. And I will make a backup of his memory stick once a week. The online backup is our only protection against fire and theft.

He uses a program called PC Law which transfers his emails to the appropriate files. I ambacking up Outlook mainly for the address book.

Standalone.

On another Forum, in the search category, they have something called "Search MY Posts". Things are easier to find that way. I have no idea if this is something that can be done easily or not but I'm sure it would help you guys!

Ugh! I was going to upgrade from 2000 to 2003 so I could test some of his restores. I'm not looking forward to it now. Thanks for the warning. I will research how best to do it, before I take the plunge.

Thank you for that reminder. I will do that - I haven't been. :-( I've just been presuming that if it restored from Ghost ,without errors, it would work.

Thanks very much, Fred!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion,

Much of our problem in finding old posts is related to our software switch from phpBB to vBulletin last spring. We have not been able to import our phpBB posts into to our archive forums. We are still hopeful of retrieving this valuable information. I suspect that Fred's six month old post is in this group.

I have used the vBulletin Search function several times to successfully locate information posted with vBulletin.

HI Terry

That explains it!! After I wrote about that, it occurred to me that it wasn,'t really necessary because you do have something in the profile that says 'search all posts'.

Good luck!! I hope you do. So much time and effort had gone into putting together such valuble information for people like me to search for. :-)

I think you guys are wonderful in sharing your extensive knowledge and giving so much of your time to help others.

Yeah remember we started with VBulletin in April with every hope of being able to save our year and 2 month archive and were bnot able to. That may yet happen as we have our member list OK, Adam was looking into how to do that.

Vivienne,

For your son's situation, using OL as a standalone, everything you say here looks good. You can backup the Personal Contact Folders as .PST using File | Export or simply copy it from C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

2002 and 2003 use different .PST formats. The best authority on Outlook is at www.slipstick.com. Included there are tips on reverting back to OL2002 from 2003 should you need to do so.

The back-up add-on also copies some other OL preferences. Believe me, there would not be an add-on if there was not a need. Not to scare you, but PST files, being as large as they can get (not the only reason), were/are known to get corrupted. Copying a large file does NOT guarantee data integrity. Most backup procedures institute a minimum of data integrity checks in the process of backing up. OL also has a repair facility program for restoring a corrupt PST (Now why would they have that in there:rolleyes:?)

I do not know how PC Law interfaces with OL, but I don't think any of our discussion here is affected.

I am happy to hear you say that. It has been quite a journey trying to figure things out - just ask Rich, who so often made sure I lived in the real world.:-)

It seems it has everything but I could not find any conversion help! Please can you point me to it?

You're right.

Most backup procedures institute a minimum of data integrity checks in the process of backing up.

I find this so scary! I've been using Norton Ghost and have had to restore twice - it did it with no problem. But almost everyone seems to be in love with Acronis. I tried it. It copied okay, verified okay but had errors restoring and stopped. I had no backup! Good thing it was just a trial run but it should shook my confidence in all backups. ( I used to use Drive Image 2000 way back when and never worried - not once was there a problem.)

OL also has a repair facility program for restoring a corrupt PST (Now why would they have that in there:rolleyes:?)

Ouch!

I have been reading past posts in this forum about the reliability of backups and have learned that the most reliable ones are done on an internal drive rather than the USB externals, which I have. I think I may add some backups to the plan. I have a C:drive with the programs and a D: Drive for the data. Perhaps I'll make a partition and backup D:toC: and C: to D:. I have, however, been told that chkdsk does not work well with 3rd party made partitions. I have not been able to find reference to this in my googling. Rich has dismissed this as nonsense but several Linux users have confirmed this to be true. I had always used Partition Magic but now I get errors when I run it. I tried a free trial of Acronis Disk Management and had no errors. What partition software should I use or should I just format everything and partition through XP - I can learn how to do that. :-)

Thanks, Fred, for a all your help and advice!!

Acronis Disk Director 10 is a new program this year where Partition Magic debuted 5 years ago and has never been updated...I think the answer should be ovious.
