T'was a full house Wednesday night in our Kickenhardware Computer Help Desk Paltalk chatroom. We were No. 3 in chatrooms most of the night, and I closed the room at 12:10 a.m.

WHO WAS THERE

KH Members- Lina, Rich, Vivienne (new member, hasn't posted yet), Dan, Doug, Dale, rbob, photolady, DaBear , NCBQA, pirules, SkipCox, Fred Freehold, Rob Cohan. .....did I miss anyone?

Visitors

SCI-FI FAN - help with outlook express

shakib_UG - bounced from the room

leo269 - bounced from the room.

google_urself2: (hey, it's against the law to use google as a verb!)

bwaer - must have been full moon. Went round and round in orange underlined caps spouting gibberish. Everyone was trying to be patient, polite, and helpful. Then bwaer writes guys i have been yanking your chain the whole time, i am making all of this up and i really know a lot about computers All I can say, bwaer, is go google yourself!

davenext - popped in and out. He's probably still upset that we wouldn't immediately make him an admin (see last week's Paltalk summary).

DISCUSSED

Rich's dog- dog was neutered last week and is okay but needs to go to dog training school! Apparently previous owner, who was not too nice to him, never put him on a leash.

Vista

Rich, discouraged, may put it back on tomorrow. Gripes: need user permissions to do something, lousy mail program, buggy beta version.

Beta version has no antivirus program except AVAST.

Does nvidia have Vista drivers for their video cards? Yes!

Acer Products

Consensus was that Acer Products s**k.

However, I loved my first Acer computer. It was compact and fit right under the monitor. It had a great "Time Machine" (more reliable than XP's System Restore). The only thing wrong with the computer was W98 and me!

Acer LCD monitor has 3-year warranty (I think it was Rich who said it needed one!)

Norton

vivienne: I use Norton - does anyone like that one? I just got it for free after rebates.

Casey was not there to rebut the disparaging consensus about Norton, thank God. Free or not, vivienne decided to go with Nod32.

Blocking Ads on Paltalk

Doug: put http://advertising.paltalk.com in your hosts file as a 127.0.0.1, and it blocks all the ads

Computer Jargon

Question: What is PITA? Answer: Pain in the A*S. Gee, so it's not a just a special kind of sour-dough / whole-wheat bread!

Outlook Express

OE lets you filter out spam without using other software. The better choice is to use OE's configurations.

Rich had some great tips on blocking certain words in OE to prevent spam. It seems spammers deliberately misspell words in order to get past filters. So, go to OE > Tools > Message Rules > New Rules and filter out words such as "aggressively buy", "span," "stok," etc.

Doug advised that blind headers are 50% of spam, configure rule: where from line does not contain @ and where to line does not contain @, delete it

SCI-FI FAN: links in e-mails in outlook express on my laptop nothing happens, i will have to run for room to room

DAN: sci-fi, check under tools / options /security, and make sure you only have enabled Internet Zone and Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me.

When Your Computer Business is Slow

Dan's suggestion: Are you doing updates to Windows on your client's systems? I always have that kind of work to fill in with. You call them and make an appointment to come out and do the windows updates, antivirus scans, scumware scans, and empty the temp folders. You would be surprised how few do the basics

Al Dom

We missed you, Al! We're hoping you have not expired along with W98 support.

Dell Laptops

robcohan: Q: how do you find the battery in a Dell notebook? A: look at the center of the fire.

Doug: Dell is advertising them with the cigarette lighter option. New trend in laptop cases, fire extinguisher pouch on side.

1100 Inspiron

SkipCox: Just bought an Inspiron 1100 1.13Ghz PIII that absolutely flies for 200 bucks...tears up a 2Ghz Celeron Dell.

Rich: I have an abbacus that is faster. Sorry to say 1100 Inspiron is a dog...lcd problems and mobo problems. Let it never leave your desk, Skip!

My apologies for late and probably incomplete summary. Am under the weather, like severe hangovers of yesteryear, but I no longer drink!

See you next week.

Lina

Thanks for the summary, and I hope you feel better!

Just thought I'd mention that eTrust has a product that will work with Vista, and they give beta testers a year trial (http://www.my-etrust.com/Microsoft/vista/default.aspx).

Yeah I am running that one now, but I have to tell you I like eTrust less than Avast by a lot!
