I wouldn't take a Maxtor drive free...unless they include the paid RMA sticker in the box.

I picked up one of these drives a year of so ago and put it in a USB/FW enclosure. I use it to make Acronis images of customer's computers before I start working on them. I also use it to backup my office and home machines. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe it's because the drive doesn't get a lot of use, but it's been working well. I'm thinking of getting another.
