Linux - Which Version/Distro Is Best For You?
Below are various websites that will help you determine
which Linux version/distro is best for you. ---pete---

================================================== ==================
Quick Note about Freespire Linux (free) & Linspire Linux (retail)

Be aware that Freespire Linux is relatively new and
not always included in the websites & articles referenced
in this thread. One person sums up Linux distro selection
as follows:

You can swim up or down the "chain" as much as you like, to the
level you think best suits you. If you're hard core, you can
work directly with the kernel and distros like Gentoo. If you
want a little more structure around things, but still pretty
raw, you have Debian. Up from there you have Debian distros
like MEPIS and Ubuntu. If however, you want codecs, drivers,
etc., then you have Freespire. And if you need even easier
still, then you can continue up the chain to Linspire.

Automated Selection Tool for choosing a Linux version/distro

This is the best selection tool I've seen!
Asks a series of questions that are custom taylored
to the way you answer as you go along. Ends up giving
you one or more distros that would best suit you.
Provides brief descriptions & screen shots to help
you make the final decision! Very cool!

TIP: Click the words, not the little icons on each question,
then click NEXT at the bottom far right to proceed to next Q.

Awesome!

Should this be a sticky? It's very helpful.

As usual, I got Ubuntu (installed), Kubuntu (I'll probably just copy my Ubuntu virtual machine and change to KDE), Mandriva (downloaded, not yet installed), Debian (want to download), and Fedora (downloaded) as perfect matches and OpenSUSE and KNOPPIX as close matches.

Thanks again. :)

Thanks.
It seems like we have a lot of activity in this section forum related to
Linux. It might warrant breaking out a new forum just for Linux. Then a
sticky would definitely be in order for that post.

As I was researching, I read that one forum was getting thousands of
search engine hits on the topic of "which linux" to use. It true, I'm
sure that post would drive many new people to KH Forums.

Hmmmm, is KH Forum even being indexed by the major search engines?

I think it would be nice to have a separate OS forum for Linux.

I don't think KH is indexed yet, but it would be nice to have a separate forum for Linux, although the "other OS" forum would probably be empty.

PS: When it is indexed, you may be able to get more hits by removing the / and also including "flavor", another name for a Linux distribution and maybe a "to use".

To make sure your suggestions about a separate forum for Linux get the immediate attention of Smokey (Adam) and all the moderators, would it be a good idea to repeat these posts in the Feedback portion of the KH forum?
