Quick Note about Freespire Linux (free) & Linspire Linux (retail)
Be aware that Freespire Linux is relatively new and
not always included in the websites & articles referenced
in this thread. One person sums up Linux distro selection

You can swim up or down the "chain" as much as you like, to the
level you think best suits you. If you're hard core, you can
work directly with the kernel and distros like Gentoo. If you
want a little more structure around things, but still pretty
raw, you have Debian. Up from there you have Debian distros
like MEPIS and Ubuntu. If however, you want codecs, drivers,
etc., then you have Freespire. And if you need even easier
still, then you can continue up the chain to Linspire.

This is the best selection tool I've seen!
Asks a series of questions that are custom taylored
to the way you answer as you go along. Ends up giving
you one or more distros that would best suit you.
Provides brief descriptions & screen shots to help
you make the final decision! Very cool!
TIP: Click the words, not the little icons on each question,
then click NEXT at the bottom far right to proceed to next Q.
