Seems all the computer chatrooms were busy last night. The one time I remembered to check our status (too much going on) we were No. 4 in rooms.
There were still five of us engaged at midnight, and I asked everyone if we could please close shop so I'd be in shape to write this summary in the morning.
Seth, no offense meant. I closed the room at 12:06 with you still listed--could not get your attention.
Thank you all for remembering to vary the color/font size for your entries into the textbox and to name the person you are addressing. Conversation was easier to follow, and it makes writing the summary easier.
Photolady, where were you? Hope all is well.
WHO WAS THERE
KH members: Lina, Vivienne, Rob (kern), Pi rules, Lawrence (qldit), Elliot, Rich, Dan, DaBear, Seth, Rob Cohan, Fred Freehold]
Visitors: I noticed only two who stopped by briefly. We were an exclusive club last night.
DISCUSSED
INTEL DUAL CORE PROCESSOR - Rich still wants to try one.
LAPTOPS - Rob (kern) needs new one; considering HP
THE KING OF BENCH MACHINES - We may give out that prize next week if we can accurately determine who has the most bench machines. Dan said he has 7; Lawrence over 10. Pi wants to include "virtual machines" (running one operating system in another) -- he has a ton of them.
HEADSETS - Took a while to get Rich's audio right. Says problem may be his $100 headset vs our $1 specials.:)
KVM's (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) -
DaBear has a 4-port KVM that lets him hook up to 4 computers to one keyboard and mouse. Elliot has one too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch
LINUX
What was Linus' last name? Torvalds
Look what I found: :clap2: The Rampantly Unofficial Linus Torvalds FAQ
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/linus/
Looks like the English pronunciation of Linux is with either a short or long i.
Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Freespire, GRUB, LILO
PUPPY LINUX
Seems to be the new rage.
When Rich gets involved with Puppy Linux, he'll then have 3 dogs....make that 4....he wants another German Shepherd pup after Labor Day. I suggested he take Puppy Linux to obedience school along with his dog instead of trashing the computer next time.
Lawrence really, really likes Puppy Linux.
Puppy Linux has Wizard for installing firewall.
VIRUSES, SPYWARE, ETC
Citizens of foreign countries have been virus writing against corporations and then asking for ransom.
XP Malware Removal Comparison, Part 2: Seth may be ready to post this today. He'll include Ad-Aware, Spybot, BitDefender, Ewido, Nod32, Norton, Panda, SuperAntiSpyware, A-Squared, Trend (Housecall), Kaspersky, and AVG.
Virus Programs Attracting Viruses
Pi rules: Many malware programs open the"gates" to allow more trojans, download more malware.
Seth: WinAntiVirus is obtained by the "You have spyware" scam popup. Once downloaded, it produces false positives and tells you have to buy the pro version to remove the spyware.
Pi rules: Spy Sweeper blocks access to that site.
Pi rules suggests checking out Cyberhawk at http://www.novatix.com/Cyberhawk/ If you try it, back up first; it does have a few incompatibilities.
Caveat: Before installing new AV program, uninstall old one. (I was worried about getting a virus in the interim)
AUSTRALIA - We enjoyed Lawrence's interesting, light-hearted comments about his hometown, the weather, the snakes, etc; i.e., "The sharks enthusiastically welcome tourists." .... :heh:
EMPLOYEES SCREWING UP COMPUTERS - Dan's busy as hell. Employees are downloading every toolbar off the internet.
GASOLINE ENGINES RUNNING ON WATER (from DaBear)
http://netmar.com/~maat/archive/watercar/h20car2.htm
ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS
Rob Cohan: Aspartame may be cause of Gulf War Syndrome because of sweetened soft drinks on the tamarq in Iraq. Heat and aspartame not good mix.
Aspartame could be cause of dementia in some people.
Splenda not optimal. Stevia currently preferred if you have to use an artificial sweetener.
CHOLESTEROL
Fred: Inflammation more important than cholesterol. 50% of people who die from heart attacks have NORMAL cholesterol.......hmmmmm, maybe they die worrying about cholesterol?
LINA'S OFF-THE-WALL QUESTION OF THE DAY: How much space do Windows Updates (including SP2) take on the computer? Seth guessed at more than half a GB.
Come join us next week. Remember, computer topics take priority. Politics and religions are a no-no in the chatroom. Use our KH forum for those subjects, if you wish.
I learned a few things, laughed a good bit, and enjoyed the camaraderie. :tea:
