On about 8/25/06, the Freespire folks posted the following message
that indicates something HUGE is going to be announced soon!
I assume this means we will hear the news by 9/1/06.
Check it out!

PS: For those who may not be aware, Linspire Linux is the retail
version of Freespire Linux. For the average MS Windows user,
switching to Linux, Freespire or Linspire seems to be a logical
choice.

Linspire will be making a HUGE announcement next week that will affect the Freespire project significantly. The announcement will be bigger than anything we have ever done to date, or perhaps will do for some time to come. This news will be significant not just to the Freespire project, but we believe,to the advancement of desktop Linux in general. Get ready for the big news!

Thanks for the info, I wonder what it will be...

Possibly a merger? A modified CNR for any Linux distro?
Freespire preinstalled on some kind of PC?

How about a major computer manufacturer offering customers
Linspire Linux as an installed OS instead of Windows?

That would be a major break through, right?
I don't think any major PC manufacturer does that now.

I know acer offers linux, but good luck finding it on their website, and dell offers freedos but it would still be big news if a company sells linux and actually makes it easy to find.

Isn't there some microsoft tax that means linux computer makers still have to pay M$ even if their not shipping windows?

Linpire's former incarnation, Lindows, tried this with computers sold at Walmart a few years ago. They sold for around $200- $300. The computers themselves were considered of dubious quality . I doubt that this would be considered groundbreaking news. Though a contract with a major computer maker may be . (edited- I misread the comments the first time)

Maybe real PCs this time, I remember the last bunch and read horrible reviews about the PC hardware.

IN A NUTSHELL, HERE IS THE BIG NEWS!!!

Excerpt from link below:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting tomorrow, the CNR service is going to be free. That's right, no charge at all for the basic CNR. The $20 annual fee is going bye bye. This means that every Freespire user can now use CNR for absolutely no charge.

I'm sure you'll have some questions, so let me try to answer some of them here.

Why is Linspire doing this?

We want to bring CNR on par with the free software management systems (apt-get, SMART, synaptic, etc.) as far as costs goes, but go way beyond these for usability and functionality. I want EVERYONE using CNR.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone at KH Forum,
For the full announcement and to see what people are saying about
this big news, see the thread on the Freespire Forum at the link below.
I posted some questions within the thread for the benefit of people
who know nothing about Linux or CNR, so give it until afternoon on
8/30/2006 for people to respond.

You're customers are going to like that ;)

for me its dissapointing it's BIG news for freespire guys but meaningless for everyone else. They allready announced an open source CNR a while back and if any other distro chose to use it then they would probobly use their own wherehouse

In any case welcome to linuxland freespire, where paying for software is a weird and alien concept.

I'll give Freespire another chance now I think (still have the virtual config and hard disk files). I didn't like the CNR service due to the cost because IMO Linux should be free of charge. Synaptic (or even apt-get) is fine for me.
