In win2000 how can I access the system configuration utility? I am reading that you can only get to it via the command line but what do you type?

It's not available in Windows 2000. Click here (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) for one solution.

I am aware that you need to copy the startup exe file from XP into the pc with WIN2000 Seth but I am looking for a way to do this from the command line, reason being, let's say you go to someone's house to work on their pc and their net connection is down so you can't get to dl from the net, won't it be cool to know how to work this from the Command line?

Mike, could you reference the website(s) you read this from? It may be referring to something like System Information in XP, not MSConfig, and in this case, the command (for system info) would be WINMSD

I do not know of a command for a system configuration utility in Win2000; I don't think one is available. IMO, the only solution would be to install a third-party utility with similar functionality or to follow instructions from here (http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm) to use the XP version (and just copy the .exe to CD or something similar and install that way).

I already copied the exe for 2000 into the laptop but I have to assume you may be correct Ray, I tried looking for the one web page which mentioned the command line and msconfig and can't find it anywhere, maybe I misunderstood it and it was speaking of getting to the Sytem info just like you've said.

You can use the Windows XP version of MSCONFIG.

Copy the file msconfig.exe from the c:\windows\system folder to the Windows 2000 c:\winnt\system32 folder.
Download the msconfig.exe (http://www.techadvice.com/specs/files_st1.asp?fnid=3398288) Windows XP version file from our site if you do not have it easily accessible, this version will work with windows 2000.
if you download this file, save it to the c:\winnt\system32 folder so you can use the Start/Run method to access it, or save it to the desktop, that way you can access it by clicking on the icon it will create on your desktop.

Click | Start | Run | and type msconfig on the text box and click the OK button to start MSCONFIG
ignore the error messages you get about not finding the following files

I used MSCONFIG with Win2000 for years...

General Information -
Windows 2000 does not have the MSCONFIG program that was provided with Windows 98.
You can use the Windows XP version of MSCONFIG.

Copy the file msconfig.exe from the c:\windows\system folder to the Windows 2000 c:\winnt\system32 folder.Download the msconfig.exe (http://www.techadvice.com/specs/files_st1.asp?fnid=3398288) Windows XP version file from our site if you do not have it easily accessible, this version will work with windows 2000.
if you download this file, save it to the c:\winnt\system32 folder so you can use the Start/Run method to access it, or save it to the desktop, that way you can access it by clicking on the icon it will create on your desktop.

Click | Start | Run | and type msconfig on the text box and click the OK button to start MSCONFIG
ignore the error messages you get about not finding the following files
config.sys
autoexec.bat
win.ini
system.ini
Click the startup tab
Check or Uncheck the check boxes of the programs you want to run or not run

It is best to write down which programs were checked so you can have a copy of them for later reference. Some of the startup entries are from anti-virus programs and must be re-checked after finishing any troubleshooting

Worth While Tip about the contents of the Startup Tab: you can open in a second window a program like Word or Paint, so that one window has MSCONFIG and the other Word. Then when you view the contents of startup in MSCONFIG press the PrintScreen key on the top right corner of the keyboard (on some systems it only works if you also press the Shift key ie <Shift> < PrintScreen>).

Pressing PrintScreen places a copy of the screen on the clipboard, then you can switch to the other program (ie Word) , create a New blank document (ie | File | New | Page | ) and from the top menu select | Edit | Paste | , this will paste a picture copy of the viewable portion of the startup window, then you can go back, scroll to more startup items and again press PrintScreen, switch to word and paste that window as well, then save the Word page or print it out to the printer for future reference.

Mike

I second Seth's recommendation for Mike Lin's Startup Control panel. I use it on my W2K machine at work and my WinXP machine at home. Great tool.
