An admin at another forum I go to posted that Vista pre-RC1 is available to download to the first 100,000 people (http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/prerc1/en/download.html), you might want to get it now if you want it at all...
I don't know if it will accept the beta keys or not, but some people on the other forum are going to try it out soon so I'll keep you updated. I still have another 4 hrs to download Vista with my current speed. :frown:

I downloaded the upgrade and made a disk to install. The computer recognized the disk and checked to tell me the AV and Sun Java would have to be upgraded after I was finished upgrading. It asks for the key early on but you can just hit enter to pass on that but you will get a window telling you that at some point you must enter the key. It says do it now because later it may make you re-install vista. I entered my beta key and it was accepted. I then watched as it checked on the internet for updates and started to gather the files. It seemed to be going good until almost 100% it said I had missing or corrupt files and it could not continue.
I then made another disk figuring something was wrong with the disk. I had the same experience with a second disk. Either I had a bad download or something is wrong with the disk. I tried three different dvd's with the same result. I checked and it seems that vista is unchanged as far as I can tell.. Since the download is over I guess I'll just have to wait until the next upgrade..The error code I get is OX80070241...

Question is:
Do you know what rc1 is and do you NEED IT?
I have Window 2003 Server RC1 and when I install the rc1 module (you have the option to install during installation OR after installation) the server craps out.
I think this is another attempt of M$ to release garbage before it is ready to be used (or is even safe to install in the first place).

Dan,
Just going by what others have said that it is a lot better then the Beta that was initially put out. I really don't know what it is suppose to fix as the whole OS is a beta.

It's official "Windows Vista RC1 is done!"
We could not have achieved this milestone without your support. The quantity and quality of feedback and data we received from you has been essential to helping us progress. Thus we wanted you to be the first customers outside of Microsoft to get access to the bits. Next week, a broader set of technical customers will get them via MSDN and TechNet. But you're the first! We wanted to get it into your hands asap so you can start giving us feedback right away.
You'll notice a lot of improvements since Beta 2. We've made some UI adjustments, added more device drivers, and enhanced performance. We're not done yet however, quality will continue to improve. We'll keep plugging away on application compatibility, as well as fit and finish, until RTM. If you are an ISV, RC1 is the build you should use for certifying your application.
The operating system is in great shape with RC1, but there's still a lot of testing to do. You've come through for us so far, and I'm asking you to once again put the pedal to the metal and send us feedback. Windows Vista is going to touch hundreds of millions of lives all around the world. Thanks for everything you're doing to help us give them the best experience possible.

Next week for gen public
Paul Thurmond:
As I noted in my review of Windows Vista build 5536 (see my review), Windows Vista has suddenly turned a corner. Gone are the egregious and annoying bugs. Gone is User Account Control's most painful and frustrating behavior. Most application and hardware incompatibilities? Gone. Performance problems? Gone. What we're left with is a highly usable upgrade to Windows Vista with tremendous security and deployment advantages. And now anyone can get it, literally: Mcft plans to ship RC1 to millions of people around the world beginning next week. If you want in with Windows Vista, your time has come.

I just D/L the 5600 Vista upgrade and made a disk only to run into the same problem I had with the last upgrade. It gets to 80% installing them jumps to 100% and a window comes up and says either the files are missing or they are corrupt. This is the same message I got from the last upgrade. I thought it was the D/L but since they stopped letting you D/L I couldn't get another copy. This time I thought I'd be smart and D/L it on two different computers and made the disks on two different computers but ended up with the same thing no matter which disk I use.

Did anyone else D/L 5600 RC1 Vista and try it?

Mine stops (on VMWare) at the end of "loading files" for Setup on the black screen right away.

I found my problem. I was trying to upgrade and it seems that neither version would allow me to just upgrade. I then tried a full install from inside windows and got the same thing. I then booted from the disk
and it installed the whole version and saved the old version as old windows. I haven't had a chance to try it yet but I do know that I will have to install my programs again. It says it will save the programs but they will no longer be connected to Vista. I went from Beta 2 to Pre RC1 to RC1. At least finally I know why it would upgrade.

I just got my cd copy of RC1 and the paper work I got with it clearly states, don't try to use this as an upgrade from Vista Beta 2. It's a standalone full program, not an upgrade.
I haven't installed it yet as I'm waiting on time to create a partition for it.
