Autopackage (http://autopackage.org/)isn't quite ready for public use but its close, and if the devs pull it off then it could be the install-shield for Linux.
Keep an eye on it :)
Personally I don't think repoistories will go away, their just so convinient but I'll look forward to the end of repoisitory or nothing culture.
