I didn't know how to delete this after I wrote it. I found my answer!!!
Sorry about that.

Hi
I have been trying to understand what archiving does in Outlook. Help sections and googling say that it archives and then deletes mail messages, among other things, that are no longer needed. This baffles me - how does it know if a mail message is needed or not. I have been happily archiving, thinking that it just shrunk the file but apparently that is not the case. It is *removing* things from the file. I have disabled it for now until I find some explanation of what transpires when it archives.
Thanks!

Hi Vivienne,
No need to be sorry.
It's not required by the rules here, but it would very cool if you posted
your findings so that someone else with the same question can be
helped in the future if they read your post. It's also a way to give
back to the community here. :)
Thanks

It was dumb of me not to think of that. I was just madly trying to figure out a way to *cancel* my post. I think you will find that, in all other cases where I posted, my solution and/or conclusion was always gladly, freely, excitedly given. I am aware that with my limited knowledge, that is so far the only way I have of showing my appreciation and being able to help another.
The answer to my question is:
Right click on any folder. Chooe Properties. There will be a tab on top called 'autoarchive'. All instructions to Outlook are given there. I have given instructions on *no* folder and in light of that fact, I have cancelled automatic auto archiving.
This is an edit to my post: What I now do not understand is why my archive file is almost as large as my original file. If everything was ticked as do not archive!!! So maybe I do not understand it after all!

To answer my own question - I opened the archive.pst file and in fact, there was nothing backed up . And the file size is now much less. I probably read the backup folder size before. Arrrghh!!
