WOW! We were third in computer rooms again most of the night. And although some of you left early, we did not close shop until about 12:45 a.m.!

WHO WAS THERE

KH Members: Lina, Rich, Vivienne, Kern (rbob), Elliot, Photolady, Lawrence (qldit), Al Dom, Fred Freehold, N3BQA (Mr Puns), and Rob Cohan.

Visitors:

-kmaaal-4 (bounced for blasting Mideastern music when we opened)

- justice 1776

-ComputermanHilo (Hawaii),

- 93B (a possible Homeland Security plant? -- typed in Arabic and then what he thought was English. I politely suggested he find an Arabic computer room. )

- Balsam-Alro7 (I think she was going to explain 93B's problem. She must have been Arabic also.) Sweet voice, but we could not make out if she was saying "font" or "song." She left suddenly. Rob Cohan and I did not think we had been impolite, and she had waited a long time for her turn to speak. What a shame! Perhaps we could have helped and scored a few points for the U.S.

- libralady 09 (Philippines)

THANK YOU - for using different font sizes and colors in the text box. The conversation in there was as vibrant as the audio, and easy to follow!

COMPUTER TOPICS DISCUSSED

LINUX

-- Xandros nice new system.

- Linux doesn't play games.

- Puppy Linux good basic introduction.

- Linux uses a lot of memory on internet.

- Put Linux CD into machine, do banking, no one will ever know you've been there. Linux much more secure than Windows!

KH FORUM SUGGESTIONS

- Continue automatic notification of new user to Smokey, Lina, and Rich. Include any other mods who want it.

- Send all new users automatic brief welcome when they sign up.

- Have Lina continue special welcome when new user makes first post.

- Work on getting spell-check up and running.

- Think about possible moderator for an overseas Computer Help Desk Chatroom (for KH users in different time zones for whom 9 p.m. EST is a pre-dawn time).

- Elliot suggested we add a find-a-date forum. Maybe we can call it something like KH Members without Partners? ...... Just kidding!!! !.... :)

REGISTRY CLEANERS

- Rich: clean your closet or other part of your house when you get the urge to clean your registry! Leave it alone!

- JV16 Power Tools for minor stuff for use by gurus who know what they are doing!

- Rebuilding registry - could do it in W-98 .......... what about XP????

THE HARD DISK DRIVE REGENERATOR PROGRAM

- mentioned by Lawrence, www.dposoft.net
HDD Regenerator is a unique program for regeneration of physically damaged hard disk drives. It does not hide bad sectors, it really restores them! $59.95

CRAPCLEANER (CCleaner)

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

- free software, good, use default EXCEPT UNCHECK COOKIES (so log-ons and passwords are not cleaned out with the rest of the trash).

- Rich: Spyblaster and Ewido gives him same cookie problem. Ad-Aware used to, but no more.

- Space Ace software (not free) was good, but has not been kept up to date.

SEARCH ENGINES - Kern (rbob) prefers ask.com to google.

EMAIL SPAM

- Vivienne again suggests Mail Washer for Outlook Express spam. Rich again would rather have the spam.

- Use web mailboxes (Hot Mail, Lycos, Yahoo, etc) for anything you sign up for. Keep Outlook Express for important people in your life.

MOZILLA, FIREFOX, SEA MONKEY- all related, Sea Monkey has email program.

I'M BEING HACKED! (Maybe not says Rob Cohan.)

- Libralady09 (Philippines) bought a computer from a friend and thinks he's hacking her and using her passwords and personal information. Every time she logs in, he knows it.

- Simple explanation(?): He may be innocent. He sees her on instant messenger, knows she's on the internet, and he sends her a message.

- Could be there was spyware on machine when she bought it. Go to http://www.downloads.com for Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware. Also go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and
run scan.

- Hopefully she'll check in next week and tell us the results.

ONLINE HARD DRIVE MONITOR - Elliot disappointed, only 80 per cent accurate.

TURBO-TAX - Elliot says new edition will not support
W98 or ME. Will support XP and 2000 .... did I get that right?

PROTECTING A WEB SITE (above my head)

- Visitor justice 1776 wanted to make sure what he was seeing was not a malicious attempt. Bot, web spider for search engine, possible industrial espionage, Chinese training for cyberspace warfare?

PROTECTING SOFTWARE FROM UNPAID USERS (also above my head)

- ComputermanHilo was having problem finding someone near him in Hawaii to help him.

- Long discussion, then Rob Cohan hooked him up with blind guy in Philadelphia.

OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED

HAM RADIO

- N3BQA is the name government gave him when he was ham operator. Elliot and Fred have/had call letters, too

- http://www.myheathkits.com/ Photolady has a friend whose father used Heath Kit to build their first color remote controlled tv. We could change the channels on it by dropping car keys on their terrazzo floor.

CHEMISTRY

- Our guys had all kinds of chemistry sets and hair-raising experiences.

- N3BQA liked his female science teacher

YOUTHFUL HELL-RAISING

- Some of you guys were bad, bad kids. I'd list all your shenanigans here, but better we don't give any youngsters, nuts, or terrorists ideas!

- By some miracle you and the potential victims of collateral damage are alive and well.

STEVE IRWIN (CROCODILE MAN)

- His death hit Australians like JFK's death hit U.S. citizens.

- Family has refused state funeral. Fans need to mourn too says Lawrence.

- Steve Irwin was the same guy who held his infant child over a crocodile. Lawrence maintains that photo angle did not show true position, was overplayed by media.

GETTING RID OF BIBLE-THUMPERS KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR

- We shy away from politics and religion in our chatroom, but this discussion was about tactics
to discourage uninvited attempts to convert you.

- Some years ago Lawrence told the male intruders that if they were young and attractive females, he would talk to them. They left and about an hour later there was a knock on the door, and two stunning girls were there. Apparently the Bible-thumpers had a good sense of humor. He had to stand there and listen to these two girls with the bible stuff, while the others were down the street laughing!!

- Lina just tells them that she's a lost cause and they should pray for her--fervently. Works!

See ya next Wednesday night .... :tea:,

Take care of yourselves .... :grouphug:

Lina-
Many thanks again for super job. The thing on turbotax is true, I,ve seen the mailing they sent out.

Maybe we ought to have a ham radio forum.

regards

Elliott

Sounds like an interesting discussion, sorry I missed it.

I personally don't like Xandros OpenSource too much, becuase, like Freespire it is too close to their commercial bretheren. Linux has it's own games that are similar to many old DOS games with some newer 3D ones. Many are centered around "Tux" the Linux penguin.

CHEMISTRY

- Our guys had all kinds of chemistry sets and hair-raising experiences.
I'm taking AP Chemistry, but it's online so I won't be able to do some of the experiments. I'm not sure what my school does/doesn't have. Honors Chemistry was very fun, though. :)

Rebuilding registry - could do it in W-98 .......... what about XP????
I believe that it could be done in XP, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to the average user.

Thanks for the summary!

Curse the timezone, you guys had fun

That was last week's summary. Check this week's (9/13/06), especially if you are a Linux fan.

Detail is fine, not too worried about spelling and grammer
