How hard is it to simply have a switch in the control panell, IPv4 or IPv6? and when the time is right switch over.

Paul Mockapetris sounds like he suffers from the 'Chicken Little Syndrom.' Everything will be fine. Take a deep breath. In through the nose and out the mouth. Horray for Vista!

I don't know, if vista dose double the amount of DNS requests then he has a valid reason to be worried

Paul has every reason to be worried. Considering he understands the workings of DNS better than almost anyone else. In addition, the fact that he is absolutely 100% correct in that most DNS servers right now are getting hit so hard that they are near capacity. Most of those servers were updated to support ipv6 as well, rather than adding new servers to handle it. The issue is that when Vista does come out, there will definitely be a huge increase in DNS traffic. Even if there was an option to enable/disable ipv4 or ipv6 in Vista, do you actually think that the average user is going to know to disable one of them? And you wouldn't want to anyway as the transition to ipv6 approaches, you will need both versions.

Well I've got my list of non ICANN DNS servers. I reckon I'll be online anyway.

It just won't be the same if the DNS servers collapse. I hope they don't.

You may have a list, however if the ICANN DNS servers go down, then you will be working on the cached copies on all others. Those cache's do not last long and thus when they go to renew, they can't and then it all goes to hell. Everything starts at the root servers and thus IF a few went down or were overwhelmed, it propogates EXTREMELY fast and is noticable to everyone. So there is a good chance that no, you will not be able to get on.

I'm not saying I completely agree with this scenario, however its still something that is very likely and needs to be addressed before Microsoft releases Vista.

I'd think they're a bit more than cached copies, going from the name and the fact many resolve non-ICANN domains.
