View Full Version : Marking a forum as READ

Hi all,
I see that this site and another that I'm on (poolforum.com) updated VB to 3.6.0 and with that update I can't find a way to mark a forum as read. The option under 'Forum Tools' doesn't do anything now. Doesn't work on either site. Under 'Quick Links' the option does indeed mark ALL forums read. Poolforum has options set to mark as read when one logs out. Kicken isn't set that way and I like that. Any clues here?
Thanks.
Al

On KH I know that you can mark all forums as read - just go to "Quick Links" | Mark forums read. The Quick Links menu is right under your user info on the left side next to search and Log Out. I don't know how you could mark as read on logout automatically, though.

Pi,
There are several methods the admin can choose to mark forums read. One is basically the logout. The option in Quick Links can mark ALL Forums Read, not individual ones. The individual one is located in Forum Tools and is the one I would use. With the release of VB 3.6.0 that option doesn't seem to work and that is my question. It did work in V-3.5
This is probably a question for Smokey the Administrator but I'm open for info from anyone who has been playing with this new version. Think I'll PM him.
BTW: I downloaded the VB manual for 3.6.0 and it isn't any help and Ben, the admin of poolforum (swimming pools), is up to his butt in alligators so to speak.

You are correct, when looking at a specific forum that you'd like to mark as read, the forum tools menu is where the option is. Is that menu not showing up for you?

More info.
Everything shows like it always did. Under forum tools when I would click on the 'mark this forum read' it would do that then jump the display up one level. Now clicking on that does absolutely nothing. No xmt/rcv line activity or anything. Another tidbit from talking to one of my friends on the poolforum....she uses Firefox and it seems to work as it should. I have IE6. I need to investigate this further. I have FF on my play system so I'll try that later. Something has changed and it's no big deal, just a minor annoyance for me.
Thanks,
Al

Edit: More info....talking to Tony (Kelly) his IE6 works, mine doesn't. We do have slightly different versions and none of the settings should make a difference, but, it's Microsoft. Still doesn't explain why the 'marking' under Quick Links works for all forums yet the individual marking under Forum Tools doesn't. One would think in the VBull code the functions would be almost identical. I'll just live with it although I would be curious to know if others are experiencing this issue.

In IE6, it DOES mark all posts in teh forum read, however you don't notice anything. I just tried it on a forum and I watch a thread I hadn't read go from unread to read when I clicked it, however no other activity showed. It didn't reload the page. It does work, it just doesn't look like it is.

Edit: I trashed my first reply in its entirety and am now more confused than ever. I tried it on this forum and did a refresh and it seemed to do the mark as it should. Went to poolforum as a normal user, same as here, and it didn't work. Back here, Tried it again on the Hardware forum and didn't work. I'm pretty meticuluous about troubleshooting like this but obviously more playing is needed. Right now it isn't high on the priority list so I'll play when I can. Only on my first beer of the day too.
Thanks again.

I feel really dumb as I can't even find Forum tools. I've been using Quick Links/mark forums read when I get to far behind..Where on this list is Forum tools.

When you open a forum, e.g. Announcements, Feedback, etc., there is a forum toolbar immediately below the New Thread button. It is identified by a Threads in Forum: (name) title and contains Forum Tools and Search this Forum options.

Okay Terry, thanks I got it. In other words you can do all the forums with Quick Links / mark all forums read and to do individual ones you must open the forum and use in forum tools. I have been just opening and closing the forum and it works the same, except if there is more than one page you must go to the last page to get it to mark as read..

Thanks again,,,

With the recent upgrade to ver 3.6.0, there is a new (and easier) way to mark all threads in a forum as read

Mark Forums Read with AJAX
You can now mark a forum read with a simple click its status icon on the index page and the change will be processed without a reload. You can also mark individual sub-forums as read in the same way.

I tried it and it works well - a neat feature when you are too busy to read every new post :)

The Status Icon is the bulletin board symbol (orange if new posts exist, blue if no new posts) in the left hand column the main forums page.

If you double click on these icons, all of the threads in that forum will be marked as read.

Still no progress here. Clicking those status things does nothing for me. Seems like I have to open a thread to get it marked as READ. No way to mark all threads in a forum READ unless I open each thread. Under Quick Links I can indeed mark ALL forums READ. Grrr. Something really whacky on my end me suspects so I'll just live with it.
Al
edit: Something else we just found out....if a super mod or someone with that OkeyDokey double clicks the envelope icon on a thread it alternately locks and unlocks the thread.

The 'Mark this Forum as Read' seems to be working for me.

If you are on the Forum Index (Kicken Hardware Problem Solving Group level) and you have one or more forums with an orange tinted icon on the far left ( http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/images/statusicon/forum_new.gif ), what happens when you place the cursor over the icon? I get a balloon message 'Double-click this icon to mark this forum and its contents as read'. What happens when you double click this icon? When I double click on an orange icon, it turns blue ( http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/images/statusicon/forum_old.gif ) and if I open the forum as this action, all of the threads in it are marked as read.

Interesting, I never knew that. Thanks

Terry,
Yes I get the balloon message but the dblclick is ignored. I have to admit I'm running an older rev of IE6 6.0.2800.1106 and need to look into updating that. Still shouldn't matter in my opinion. I have two systems here, just about identical. I use one for playing and experimenting before I do anything on my good one. Being on a dialup and super careful about sites I visit I stay out of trouble. Phooey...pool season is about over so I may have more time to fuss with computer stuff. It's interesting being a SM on the poolforum and in daily contact with another SM so we can play a lot with the VBull stuff.

When you say your double click is ignored do you mean that the orange icon stays orange? And the threads in that forum stay unread?

The version of IE6 should not make a difference. However, I second the motion that you look into upgrading.

Are you encountering the same problem on both systems?

Terry,
Yes. Get the message, clicking does nothing, absolutely nothing. I agree that it shouldn't matter what rev of IE is involved...but hey...it's MICROS**T, you fill in the blanks. As much as I hate it, seems to be working for me. I said this is a very low priority, simply interesting. I don't lose sleep over it.

Got more problems now like dealing with FedEx. I HATE THEM. Yesterday did a track on a shipment from Microcenter...y'all know that place in Saint Davids, actually from CA., delivered to my front door. Sure...Not Mine. Hate FedEx. Not the first time. They use contract drivers that don't know the routes from what I hear.
