I have 3 hard drives on my system; "C, and D" are internal ; "E" is external 1394 250gb IOGear hard drive. The specs of the hard drive can be seen here: http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GHD335C250&nameCOMBO%203.5

I have a problem with the external "E" drive on the system. The "E" drive is ONLY used to store the system backups. Prior to doing a backup and looking at "My-Computer", the "C, D, and E" drives show as they normally should. This is what's happening: when I do a Acronis Backup of the "D" drive to the "E", Acronis Backup seems to hang and the "E" drive seems to go off-line. This does not happen at the very beginning of the backup. Trying to re-run the backup several times, the problem occurs anywhere between 57 qnd 92 percent complete. Going to "My-Computer", the "E" drive does not show. I can unplug the power to the "E" drive, re plug and then it will show in "My-Computer".

At first I thought the "D" drive was causing the problem because when I do a backup of the "C" drive, I do not have this problem. If it was the "D" drive, why would My-Computer act as I described above.

Do you have any suggestions?

Good questions, very strange. We're pretty certain that the external D is working. Have you tried backing up the D drive to either another external device or even to the C drive?

- If you can't do either of them, then it's definately in the D drive.
- If you can, then call Acronis.

Tony: the "D" drive is internal. The only external one is the "E" drive. As a test, I did a full backup of the "D" to the "C" and it worked. Played around with the "D" and then did an Incremental of the "D" to the "C" drive. That also worked. This tells me it's the "E" drive or the wires (connections) to the "E" drive.

Rich_M gave me a good suggestion. This week, I call IOGear and talk to them and then probably do a RMA with them. The drive has a one year warranty and it's only been about 4 months.

... but if the backup of C to E works, that tells me the external E is working properly.

You could try an xcopy from C: to E: . It should go fairly quick and it will tell you if the E and the system are there. Like this from the cmd line in the root,

xcopy c: e:/e/c/h/r/k/s/v/d

I am puzzled...is this drive plugged in usb or 1394? It could be the port it is plugged into which is why I suggested trying it on the other either usb or 1394. It could also be the 1394 port on mobo which might make it a good idea to try 1394 card as well. I seem to remember you have an Adaptec card for 1394 which is the best as it uses a TI chipset. These drives can be flukey with via chipsets and the onboard 1394 is usually a via chipset.
