Looking for an external. Wanted to build one, but.... I also really wanted a Seagate drive.

I read several reviews on this. Not going to get it. Admin, please delete this thread. Thanks.

Golfmore,
You can delete your own posting by using thread tools at the top of the post.It is also a function in "edit" below...
I am inclined not to delete this as first of all it is an excellent buy, and as a mod I see no reason to delete it. I don't know why you suddenly want a Seagate and then post a WD drive, but based on the return rate of recent Seagate sata drives, I would seriously reconsider Seagate drive purchases for the moment. I realize they have the only 5 year warranty, but please remember all that means is they take yours back and send you someone elses unfixable drive they have "worked on" and you will be back in the same boat real soon, as most of us doing a lot with "rma" drives have learned.

I ageee to some extent with what Rich as just said, but I'd like to add that a warranty is an indication of how reliable the manufacture believes the drive to be. A 5 yr warranty may be an indication that the company feels it's more reliable than ones with a 1 yr warranty.

After reading several reviews on that WD drive, I realized that it will be a problem soon. I just felt that it may be an issue. I have never had a problem with Seagate drives, and have had them with WD drives. Are all replaced drives 'refurbished' drives with all manufacturers? I don't suddenly want a Seagate. I have nothing but Segate in my machine. I was considering the price only. I used to have Maxtor, but they were all SCSI drives.

Replacement drives from mfgr's are always refurbished drives yes. I had very few problmes with Seagate drives in the past with ide, however with sata drives, Seagate are the only ones I have had go bad, and it has happened a lot, including ones shipped new that did not work. I figure when Maxtor bought Quantumj, their line went straight into the toilet. Now with Seagate buying maxtor, the same thing will happen. The only drives I have ever had go down from WD were ones that were shipped badly, and one that took a lightening strike and I have used few others in the last 3 years.

Good to know. I too have had very good luck with Seagates, but as you say, they were the IDE drives. I have two SATA's now, and have not had a problem, but they aren't that old. Maybe I'll get an ATA100 drive just for backup. I can't afford SCSI right now so that's not an option.

I use WD Raptor drives that are 10,000 rpm and honestlky I doubt I would even consider the expense or annoyance of scsi drives anymore after using these.

've kinda done that. I do like SCSI, but, maybe the SATA thing is the way to go. Just thought.

Is firewire faster than USB?

The official answer is 480 mbps transfer rate on usb 2.0 vs 400 in firewire though there is a new firewire 800 with 800 speed, but very little of those units around.
The practical answer is that usb 2.0 is such a messed up interface, 1394 tends to blow it away in practical applications.

While ALL of my desktops are SATA or hang over IDE's - ALL of my SERVERS are SCSI. SCSI is long from dead BUT the expense dictates that only a server would benefit from the ULTRA throughput of multitasking stress on a drive.
In 15 years I have only lost ONE SCSI drive in a server environment. I can't say the same for EISA, EIDE, or SATA. And since servers are usually not for a "home" grown environment, SATA with a good external backup drive works good.

I assume that when I use this device, that if I do a complete backup, the backed up version will be NTFS if my HDD is NTFS. I'm not sure if this is bootable yet. Is it feasible to put a switch on the power cord to an internal SATA drive and power it on and off, to do the same thing as an external, sorta? Any hints or? Thanks.

It would he helpful if you could be a bit more specific about what you are doing. It is not clear to me what kind of device you acquired or what backup software you are using.
It would probably be helpful if you should started a new thread with your backup question outlining these details.

My hint is give up that thought all together. sata drives are hot swappable, but this is a bad idea. It is an internal so let it be so.
