Just had a chance to sit down with the new Vista RC1, It seems that my internet connection is not working right. If I go to setup it tells me I am already connected to the internet but if I try and connect to a web page I get IE cannot display web Page. My lan seems to be okay as I connected to another computer without a problem.Anybody have any ideas to try? Going to setup printer now..

Can you ping google?

No in fact Vista troubleshooting tries to ping other sites and can't. It tells me to check the LAN but I can't find anythiong wrong with it and yet when I try and set up an internet connection I am told I am already connected.

try pinging an IP address, that will test to see if its DNS or something else
66.249.93.104 (google) should do

Okay, I had to take a shower before supper.
Here is what I got>
Reply from 66.249.93.104 bytes 32 times 127ms TTl 225
four times
Package sent=4 received=4 lost=0
approx. roundtrip
min 125 Max 129 ace. 126
So it seems that it did ping google.

Casey,
You have a problem with DNS resolving. Either the router is not handing off the DNS servers for your ISP or Vista cache needs to have the dns flushed.

I flushed the DNS cache in Vista and still have the same problem..

Well I wasted my time for the last time. I downloaded and installed Rc1 only to find out it did not now accept my Usr usb wireless adapter (which I might add worked in beta2) so I figured screw this huge waste of time.

I'm not sure how you change the DNS servers in Vista but I'd just switch to some diffrent ones.

The funny thing is they have a diagnosis window that keeps telling me it's my LAN adaptor. When told to check for problems it says it is working proper but I still have problems. I forwarded the problem to Msft and they came back with it will be fixed in the final version.
I find it strange that I cannot connect to MSFT but am able to connect to Vista home page. But that's the only place I can connect.

Your LAN adapter is probobly not going to cause DNS problems, stranger things have happened but its unlikely. You'll be far better of just trying diffrent DNS servers.

I tried two ways to change the dns server and neither one seems to work. The one I went into the registry and changed the server in there. It seems to change okay but when I check IPconfig it still has the old one listed. I then tried to change it with the command line using something called regfinder. When it's all said and done it tells me that regfinder is not compatible. I'm at a loss but will keep looking..

Maby rich was right...
short of downloading and installing vista RC1 myself I can't do much.
P.S. has the XP method of going into network connections, right clicking your lan, selecting propoties, selecting the TCP/ip protocol, clicking propoties then changing DNS servers been removed?

Tortanick,
You can still get into the DNS settings but it took me a while to find out how. Network & Sharing/Manage Network Connection.Lan High Speed Internet/
Local Area Connections/ Properties
Internet Protocal Version 6(TCP/IPV6)/Properties
Advanced and finally DNS settings.
I put 68.87.66.196 in instead of 194 but one setting wouldn't take it so I added it but that made no difference. I'll just keep on looking..

I just noticed that DHCP is enabled in the settings but when I use IPCONFIG it is disabled in both connection 1 and two.. I don't know if that is the cause but it seems that it should be enabled. I checked the settings and everything is set to automatic...

Why are you useing IPv6? the net still runs on v4? You sure you're not useing both at once acording to another thread thats what vista dose, either way you should be changing the settings for v4, both wouldn't hurt but defiantly not v6 alone.
And if it insists on two DNS servers use 68.87.66.196 & 4.4.4.1

Following this on the Internet I found out this is not a new problem. It seems that it can be traced back to Beta 2 where the problem of being able to connect to the network but not being able to connect to the internet happened to a few people. One guy said he solved it by installing a NIC card in place of the onboard
setup. Later today I'll have time to play some more and I'll give you ideas a try. Thanks,,

I took time to install the numbers you gave me and installed them in DNS. They show up in IPCONFiG but still can't connect to internet...

Update:
Re-installed Vista RC1 and still have the same problem. As I try and find an answer I see that this problem is and has been around for quite awhile. I keep hoping someone found the answer but so far I haven't seen it. One guy has three computers on Vista and two work fine and the third has the same problem I have. He even mentions Vista tells him to reset adapter but that doesn't help. You would think they would get a fix out as soon as they could. It seems I was able to download the updates and yesterday I was on Vista's web site but no others. Guess I'll have to be patient..

Try typing those into a command line?

I typed in the commands without the run and received an OK and instructions to reboot but it didn't help anything. I've tried changing all the security settings and it didn't help.

You lose Internet connectivity after you install Windows Vista Beta 2 on a computer that is behind a home router or gateway
loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation');Symptom
loadTOCNode(4, 'moreinformation');After you install Windows Vista Beta 2 on a computer that is connected to certain home routers or gateways, you may lose Internet connectivity. You may be able to ping Internet sites from the computer, but you cannot browse any Web sites or communicate across the home network to any other computers by using TCP/IP.
Note Connectivity to resources that are located behind the same router or gateway is not affected. Also, this issue does not affect connectivity from other computers that are behind the same router or gateway. This issue affects wireless and wired hosts in the same manner.
Cause
loadTOCNode(4, 'moreinformation');This issue occurs because the router or gateway does not support Windows Scaling. By default, Windows Scaling is a new feature in Windows Vista Beta 2 that is enabled. This feature is Internet standards based (RFC 1323). If the router or gateway does not support this feature correctly, the router of gateway may drop packets that use this feature. Because of these dropped packets, the TCP connection cannot be established. TCP is used by most network-based applications. Therefore, Internet connectivity is lost.
Resolution
loadTOCNode(4, 'moreinformation');A resolution for this issue is available as critical update 920698 on the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site. The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
Windows Vista Beta 2 and Windows Code Name "Longhorn" Server Beta 2:

Would you believe I downloaded this update and when I tried to install it I was tiold it wasn't for my system..I thought for sure this was the answer...

Finally have the Internet connection working. It took disabling "TCP Checksum Offload(IPV4) and it worked without even having to reboot.. Whew I'm glad that's taken care of...

Next project for Vista is getting a Jave that works. I thought the regular Java might but it won't even install and it tells me it will tell me what to do but nothing else comes up. I guess I just have to be patient and keep looking.

This is the fun part of playing with computers. I set up Outlook express, the same way I always do, I tried watching a dvd which wasn't bad, Today when I have time I'm going to see about burning a disk. They say certain Nero software will work but I'm not crazy about nero. I don't like the sound quality, although I am using on board sound and I hope they change the log off sequance. I think it's stupid to have to always indicate you want to shut down. Oh yeah, I also don't like whenever the screensaver comes on you have to click to get back to the desktop.A Lot of unnecessary movement.
I must admit a certain satisfaction when I get something to work.

I agree with the satisfaction of getting it to work...hey do you mean Outlook Express or Windows Mail? I tried to bring in OE when I was playing and I couldn't do it. I hated Windows Mail, too much like Outlook.
casey

I guess the real name is Windows Mail but it looks just like OE to me. I haven't used it much yet but it seems to work the same as OE. The only gripe I have is putting an icon somewhere to get to it so I don't always have to go in Programs..

The burner software is nothing to write home about but it did do the job. It's really basic but it will still take some time to get use to.
I wanted to play with the Lan so I set up the cdrive to share with the other computers. I had no trouble connecting from Vista to the other computers but am having a problem connecting from other computers to Vista. The user box and password comes up and I put administrator in and it goes away but then tells me :
Logon failure:User Account Restriction... Must go back and check my settings..

I think Microsoft went overboard on this security stuff. I have been chasing all kinds of settings trying to be able to connect from XP to Vista computer. I can connect from Vista to the XP computers but not from the XP to the Vista. I'm sure it's something to do with security but haven't been able to get it yet. I should have written all the settings down as I was doing them but I didn't. The last move I made let me place an Icon on my XP computer and I thought I had it. But when I tried to open the Icon I got acces denied. Well I'm about out of ideas.
Well I got it that I can see individual folders on the XP drive but not the whole drive
like you can on XP..

I tried getting permission for the whole Cdrive but Vista won't allow me or will it allow me to map Program Files.
This setting permissions is a PITA. You not only have to set permissions in Sharing but in Security as well. There must be an easier way to do this that I am missing. I can now map each folder on Cdrive but they won't open until you get the permissions set. I think I had enough for tonight as I set the permissions for the folders I wanted. Enough until tomorrow..
