Very Interesting, so in a few words, no email is safe no matter which you choose. It's just a risk.

Here is my step by step guide to Gmail privacy:
1) set up Gmail POP and SMTP in your account
2) download thunderbird, the enigmail extension and GNU Privacy Guard
3) Install & setup the above.
4) Create a key pair, E-mail the public key to all your friends and Key aquantances like your lawyer (Note this key can be intercepted by third parties and it won't matter)
5) Get your friends to do the same.
6) Never send unencrypted E-mail again

I never send anything too personal on Gmail. I block all ads and Google's cookies (look at the Firefox extension CustomizeGoogle (http://www.customizegoogle.com/)). It allows for blocking of ads throughout Google's sites - Gmail, Google search, Froogle, etc. (disabled by default), uses a secure Gmail server, blocks Google Analytics cookies, and anonymizes the Google UID cookie.

Email is normally not encrypted and as such anyone can read it. You should never send anything TOO personal on any email, unless it's encrypted as T-Nick does.
I've been using gmail for over a year. I use it as an on-line file cabinet. I subscribe to tech sites and have articles sent from those sites sent to my gmail mail account. I no longer have to file them away. They're always with me as long as I have an Inet connection.
Believe it or not, I acutally LIKE their content-sensitve advertising. Get an email about a router and you get advertising in the sidebar related to routers. I find it useful.
My personal account is another matter. It's not on gmail. It's on my own domain.

We mostly use Gmail for the same thing. I get forum updates and tech news on it.
