View Full Version : Firefox cuts off Yahoo email

The righthand margin of messages in my Yahoo mailbox is
being cut off. My default browser is Firefox. Yahoo sent me
the following diagnosis:If the text of a message
you've received doesn't wrap properly and runs off the
right-hand side of the screen, the HTML formatting
used to create the message is not able to be displayed by
the browser.

So I tried accessing my Yahoo mail via Internet Explorer
instead of Firefox, and the messages are normal, not cut off.

Question: Should I uninstall and then reinstall Firefox?
If so, can you give me an url for downloading Firefox?

Thanks.

Lina

Here (http://www.mozilla.com/) is the link for Firefox. You can use it for updating. Try it.

Chryssi, that's the same version I'm using;
however, mine may be corrupted.

Should I uninstall Firefox through Add/Remove
Programs and then reinstall from the site
you provided?

I think it's better to do that.

Will do right after I do weekly housecleaning (AV and spyware scanners, DiskCleanup, Defrag, CCleaner, etc.)

Thank you, Chryssi!

I've been having problem for days now, also Nick and BM does.

They are kind of slow. Just got a KH email (~l:45) that was sent at 12:01.

I always use the New Posts button for all posts, so I usually don't miss any replies unless perhaps they were made while I was typing and posting to the same thread. I use the email feature to quickly check to confirm that I've already read them.

There definitely is a problem with the KH emails.

Lina just tell me if yahoo email is fixed with your new Firefox dowload.
I started to believe there is a connection/problem with yahoo email with the problem i have. It seems the emails are stuck in yahoo email server and come late.

I think my problem is fixed!!

After running all AV and spyware scanners, CCleaner, Disk

No change. Righthand margin of messages in my Yahoo
mailbox still being cut off if I access them through Firefox.
If I access them through Internet Explorer, the messages
are not cut off.

I strongly suspect the problem lies with Firefox. Any
suggestions?

:help: I don't like to use IE any more than absolutely
necessary. None of Yahoo's suggestions made sense, or
if they did, they did not work.

It would be a PITA to transfer newsletter subscriptions,
etc, from Yahoo to another web-based mail service.

Hey Lina hold on for a sec to check my yahoo email with Mozilla and i will be back.

chryssi2001
09-15-2006, 09:47 AM
Well, no warning for me even though i hardly use Mozilla, i don't like it, and i am more familiar with IE.
Same as you, right part or email some words are out of view.
Went options/preferences and changed 1st width to 99 instead of 72 but nothing changed.
If you view it in smaller text the email look fine, but it's difficult to read them.
There must be a way to fix this, from preferences. Check it out, i will try also from home later on and i will let you know. You don't have a corrupted file don't worry. It seems yahoo changed the settings for the emails and only affected Mozilla, but there must be a way to fix it.
P.S.
Found it. Go to options right hand over your email and middle column scroll down and choose preferences. Change 1st width which is 72 to 66 save and click check mail again.

Thanks for your research. Your solution made sense. Unfortunately did not work.

I tried 66, 60, 50, 99! No change. I made sure I checked SAVE. I even
signed out of Yahoo and went back in. I did everything but restart my
computer.

I don't know how I always come up with these off-the-wall problems!

Lina i've tried that with Mozilla at the office computer and with 99 the text was more out of the email page, and then i tried 66 and it worked.
Can you go and check if you have your email shows HTML or plain text please?
Also check 2nd width please.
There must be something in the preferences.

Where do I check that? I do get emails in HTML (cartoons, ads, etc, in body of email).

Also check 2nd width please.

Screen Width: 55 (composing plain text mail)
characters (range: 50 - 99 chars.)
This is the maximum line length of your outgoing messages. The default value is 55.

No rush, Chryssi. I send any cutoff mail to my Outlook Express
mailbox where I can read it.

Mode: Compose messages as color and graphics
HAVE A DOT HERE: Compose messages as plain text

FONT SIZE to NORMAL. (If you make this small the emails will fit to the page but they are very small to read.)

I don't think there is anything more to check regarding your problem.
See what you can do with your screen resolutions. Problem lies there i think.

I can forward 2 emails of KH from my email, 1 with 66 and one with 72 characters to see the difference. If you want to see how they look in my email just pm me your email address.

Chryssi, there was no change in Yahoo after I changed compose messages in plain text.

P.S. Just talked to a son who is urging me to get a 21-inch monitor! I have other priorities; i.e., an electric recliner (mine quit working) and maybe cataract surgery next year.

My current MAG DJ717[Monitor (June 1997) continues to serve me well, except perhaps for size. It might just outlast me!:)

Well Lina, as you say you have other priorities but changing your monitor even if it's 9 years old.
I did sent the emails so you can check them.
I can't see any other way to fix your problem but changing as i said in previous post, your screen resolution. If you don't want to do that for the obvious reason, you can let the other email address you have now for KH emails, either you can open your emails with IE.
Can you search for a 2nd hand bigger monitor which will come cheaper? Just an idea.

Chryssi, if I get frustrated enough, I may mess with screen resolution.
Just wish I had a bench computer to try the tip I posted here:
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3667For web developers, it is often wise to test how your you design looks using an alternate resolution to yours. For example, if you have your screen set to 1200 x 1024, and want to see how it looks to a potential viewer using a 1024 x 768 resolution, resizing your screen or browser window is quite a hassle. Instead enter this shortcut into your address bar:

_javascript:resizeTo(1024,768)

Of course you can change the numbers to anything you want to test. Additionally, you can bookmark this code so it will be available at
the click of a button. This is a pretty handy way to test web pages as
you go.

One of these days I'll get frustrated enough with my Yahoo mailbox
and experiment with the screen resolution.:brick:

Thank you so much for your patience and time-consuming efforts
to help me. .

Success!! :cheer2:

Chryssi PM'd me as follows:

Got an idea.
Go in preferences in email, and play with text size
which has the options, smaller/normal/larger and text
width. As bigger the letters, make width smaller, and
see if it works, try different compinations.

Bingo! Changed Font Size to SMALLER, leaving the
widths 66 and 50 (at this point, I can't remember what
they were originally!).

BTW, in IE the font is very light and hard to read.
Perfect in Firefox.

No new monitor, no change in screen resolution
needed!

Thanks a million, Chryssi! :hail:

I just ran across this in Kim Kommando's Newsletter. It may
help explain the Yahoo mail problem?

Problems with Firefox
I tried to convert to FireFox because I was tired of Internet Explorer's flaws. Unfortunately, MANY sites simply will not load with Firefox. Any advice on settings in FF that may be causing this? Or is it due to sites being purely IE compatible?

I use Firefox and run into this problem occasionally. It is doubtful that Firefox's settings are causing the problem.

The problems stem from two things. Internet Explorer has proprietary features that developers sometimes include. And Internet Explorer uses ActiveX; Firefox does not. Let's look at those things.

Browser standards are developed by the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C). Members of the W3C are free to ignore these standards. Microsoft sometimes does that. Firefox adheres more closely, but is not perfect.

So, sometimes you'll open a page in Firefox that doesn't look right. Type will run over pictures, for instance. The page's developers almost certainly are using code peculiar to IE. Usually, though, you can still view these pages in Firefox.

Other things simply won't work in Firefox. For instance, you cannot update Windows in Firefox. That's because you have to use an ActiveX control. These little programs facilitate interactivity on the Internet. With the ActiveX control, you can tell Microsoft how to search your machine. If updates are available, you tell Microsoft which ones to download.

You can go to the update page in Firefox. But Microsoft will tell you to use Internet Explorer.

Why doesn't Firefox support ActiveX? Many people, including me, consider ActiveX a security hazard. ActiveX controls have direct access to Windows. A malicious program with an ActiveX component could wreak havoc on your computer. I wrote a column with more information on the problems with ActiveX.

Actually, I rarely run into the problems you describe. When I update Windows, I use Internet Explorer. I do the same when pages don't render correctly. It just isn't that big an issue.

Two Firefox extensions facilitate the temporary use of IE. They are IE View and IE Tab. IE View opens a separate window with Internet Explorer. IE Tab opens Internet Explorer within your Firefox window. There is also an ActiveX extension available.

You can download these and other Firefox extensions through my Web site.

If your problems are truly serious, remove and re-install Firefox. To do that, click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click Add or Remove Programs. Find Mozilla Firefox and click Change/Remove. Check Windows Explorer (Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer) to be sure everything is gone. Then download and re-install Firefox.

Lina, when i changed the width in preferences, it's changed in both of my browsers and stayed like that. Because the change is in yahoo and not in the browsers actually.
So something else is the problem...

Pretty weird settings reverted back. Something is not holding the preferences changes....

Just checked in Firefox, i have normal font size, 1st width 60 and 2nd width 55.
If Firefox can't read HTML probably that's the reason.

Found this Lina. From yahoo help.

I copied and pasted the HTML code for Weather into my page, but the add-on won't display. Why?
First be certain that you copied the exact HTML code from the add-on page and pasted it into your page's HTML. If you're working with an offline tool such as FrontPage, be sure to republish your page with the new code. Learn how to add HTML to your page.

If you're certain you copied the code properly, check to see if the add-on you are trying to install requires activation. The Stock Quotes add-on, for example, requires that you return to the Stock Quotes page to activate the feature after you have copied the HTML code into your page.

Finally, be sure your browser supports JavaScript and that you have JavaScript enabled. Some add-ons include JavaScript elements such as a rollover image or pull-down menu that won't be visible or work properly if your browser does not support JavaScript, or if this support has been disabled.

To enable JavaScript in Netscape:

1. Select "Preferences" from the Edit menu.
2. From the dialog box, select "Advanced."
3. Make sure "Enable JavaScript" is checked.
4. Click the "OK" button.

For more information, please consult your browser's help files. If you need a browser that supports JavaScript, we suggest downloading Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, Netscape Navigator, or Mozilla Firefox.

Lina, i don't know if Firefox supports Java. Maybe you need to download msjava.
But try again, go in IE, in your yahoo mail, and make font smaller, and width 72 and 55 , save, check an email, sign out and go to Mozilla, sign in your email from there and check an email there.(72 is the default for 1st width, so you are bringing width back to normal and just changing text size. In IE you won't be able to read text, they are very small.
Normally fixing in 1 browser settings in both browsers will be the same.
If not, then fix settings in preferences in the same way, save, check an email, and sign out. Close your computer and reboot and check both again.
I want to see if after reboot all those settings fly away.

Chryssi, I think I followed your instructions accurately,
but the Yahoo problem prevails. This is what I did:

In IE font size was already smaller, and I changed
widths to 72, 55.

In FF font size and widths were already smaller, 72, 55.

I rebooted, checked Yahoo via both browsers. Font size in IE
appeared larger. No change in Firefox, words in righthand
margin still cropped.

You emailed me these further instructions:
While you have Mozilla open go to
tools/options/content and see if you have
enable java with tick in front of it and
enable java script again with tick.

In FF > Tools > Options > Content, both Enable
Java and Enable JavaScript were checked.
I unchecked and rechecked them and rebooted
to see if it made a difference in Yahoo mail. It did not.

So I guess we either give up or install msjava???

Not yet, redo the changes, as you noticed, if you change the settings of yahoo email while browsing with IE, the same settings stand for Mozilla.
So now, go and just change with IE 72 to 60, let the rest as they are, and go check if same settings in Mozilla and how they look and post back.

One step at a time. This way it's easier for me to understand the differences are created in Mozilla. I have the link for msjava but that's our last step and i am not sure it's going to fix anything. Just a thought.

I changed the IE Yahoo email 72 setting to 60,
signed out, and rebooted.

This time the FF Yahoo email setting of 72
was apparently automatically changed to 60.
However, words in righthand margin of some
emails were still cropped.

BTW, did I mention earlier that the
word-cropping occurred only in certain
Yahoo emails?

If I'm not mistaken, this is new; and
rebooting and/or signing out of Yahoo
mail allows changes made in Yahoo mail
in one browser to take effect in the other?

It seems that what your computer is doing, and that's why i told you to do that. When i reboot the settings stay the same.

So in Yahoo now you should be able to see all emails properly and not cropped. Need confirmation for this.

What's text size in both now please? If it's readable in both browsers, go and rechange from IE 1st text to 55 reboot and see what mozilla has now and if it's better.
If not readable say so, to try some other combinations of width with text.

As I posted, This time the FF Yahoo email setting of 72
was apparently automatically changed to 60.
However, words in righthand margin of some
emails were still cropped.

BTW, did I mention earlier that the
word-cropping occurred only in certain
Yahoo emails?

As I said, text size in both is smaller

In view of the above clarifications, do you still want
me to proceed with the steps mentioned below?

If it's readable in both browsers, go and rechange from IE 1st text to 55 reboot and see what mozilla has now and if it's better.
If not readable say so, to try some other combinations of width with text.

I await further instructions.

So it seems text is readable in both browsers.
NOW:
Go and rechange from IE 1st text to 55 and sign out don't reboot.
Let IE browser open and open Mozilla and check the settings and post back what you have there before rebooting.
Then reboot and check both again please.

I booted up.

IE - text readable, settings smaller, 55, 55.

FF - words in righthand margin still cropped, settings
smaller, 55, 55

Chryssi, I'm ready to throw in the towel. Are you?

If so, I'll either prune the thread to show the problem
and the fact that no solution has been found or ask
a mod to delete the thread entirely.

No need to delete the thread. Seems this is hard to fix.
Did i post the link for the add-on for yahoo? Not sure about it.
If not i will search for it later on, on my way to work now.
Found the link here (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/lofiversion/index.php/t1648.html) it is.
I would like you to try that, and final step we try msjava.
If both those don't work i quit.

P.S. Lina, i searched a bit, and found this (http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000077.html)
Seems a lot of people have problem using yahoo email with Mozilla.
Saw an article someone tried reading email without java script enabled.
Have a look.

Don't think you did

I'm lost. Just where do I find and download the

Difficult to navigate the site. Did not find the article
regarding java script enable.

BTW, someone suggested that I uninstall Firefox and install
an earlier version. You will recall, I uninstalled and
reinstalled FF on 9/15/06. That had to be the newest version.
Any idea when the latest version came out?
No sense reverting to older version if that was the one I had
installed when the problem began.

Thank you, Terry.

I have Firefox 1.5.0.7. That means the Yahoo problem began
while I was using the earlier version. There would be
no advantage going back to the earlier version.

Thanks again.

Hi Lina,
sorry for the late respond, well it seems the link for the add-on is not working, and i searched around and can't find a functionable one.
So here (http://www.saigoninfo.com/mjv_help.htm) is msjava link try from the 1st line. If you have msjava you will see the icon of java on the right of your task bar but,
before you try, scroll down to see the image, click on it, take away the mouse and move again the mouse on the image to check if it's like water moves in the picture. If not then install it. Let the link open to check the image after downloading it.
When finished, go try yahoo email with java on, and then uncheck the boxes of java in Firefox and retry.
If this also doesn't work...well...better use IE, until you change your monitor.

Hi, Chrissy. After thinking about it at length and talking to some of
our members during our Wednesday night chatroom, I've decided
to throw in the towel and hope when the new Firefox 2.0 becomes
available that will solve the problem.

We've tried almost everything except changing the screen
resolution on my monitor and downloading msjava. Yahoo
mail had worked fine with the current screen resolution and
without msjava. I can't be persuaded to take those two further
steps.

Thanks for your time, efforts, and patience trying to resolve
this!

I think we should leave this thread open a while for any new
feedback and then work on pruning, summarizing, and marking
it UNsolved. :)

We tried. You're a real trooper, Chryssi! Thanks again.

When I went to my Yahoo mailbox today, I was
offered a beta improved Yahoo mail
system or the option to try it later.

I never try anything that's beta, but maybe between
a new Yahoo mail system and a new Firefox in
the works my problem will be resolved. We'll see.

Lina i didn't get any notice about Beta from yahoo, probably they are trying to fix problems created like yours.
Be carefull read about Beta in their help pages first, and then decide what to do. Not sure but i thing Yahoo improved Beta, its the subscription one.

 I was late in answering you both but, still have the emails problem!! I was lucky to get them for that day only

Last week I upgraded to Firefox 2.0. My Yahoo email
continued to be cut off.

Tonight, I just noticed that this has stopped, and Yahoo
email is back to normal!... :)

I have no idea why! I have not downloaded anything new
or changed settings.

So, problem resolved, but no findings on why it surfaced
or why it disappeared.

(You think the recent mid-term elections had anything to
do with it? You think Homeland Security was messing
with my computer and the elections scared them off?)

Most probably it's the elections .
May be Firefox was creating the problem Lina.
