We placed second :second: and third in chatroom attendance for most of the night. Dale, Fred, and I closed the room about 1 a.m.

WHO WAS THERE

KH members: Lina (nit-picked about using different size/color in textbox), Pi rules (in and out, had to listen to some AP Chemistry online, eat, print notes), Dan (busy, but he made it!), Rich, Rob (rbob/kern), Photolady (we missed you last week, hope you're feeling better), Elliot, Pete, NC3QA, Dale (welcome, stranger!), Al W98 Dom, Fred Freehold.

Visitors: corabica00, obene, oghei, gefter, netdevil86, WarningMustBe18, sHorT_bUs_RydEr

KH CHATROOM

- In our forum, Sam Ceccola suggested weekend session. That could accommodate overseas members and others who can't make it Wednesday nights.

- Attending a weekend session would land one of our members in divorce court.:)

KH FORUM HOME PAGE

- Currently too much on home page to digest, should be designed for the newbie?

- List Adam as our founder, with short biography?

- List mods, with short biography (occupation, expertise, specialty, history of participation in other forums or radio programs)?

- Include icons for each mod (their photos -- for Rich, his dog)?

COMPUTER TOPICS DISCUSSED

* C# Programming

- an object-oriented language developed by Microsoft, based on C++ (per Pi)

- Pi learned C++ Programming for a competition last year. Photolady has C++

- Question by Visitor corabica00, did not get instantaneous answer, left before Pi could help him! His loss!

* Belarc and Everest -Neither one lists drives in system. *See edit note below.

* Vista - Five different versions of Vista in download. Only lets you install the one for which you have key.

* Nod32

- Still the best AV (Rich, Al)

- Downside: takes 2 or 3 days for Nod32 to email license key.

- For customers who trust him, Pete uses remote assistance to install Nod32 when email arrives. (I assume they are protected by Nod32 trial version or some other AV while awaiting the email).

* Yahoo Mail Problem (Lina)
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3715

- Using Firefox, some Yahoo emails have cropped words in
righthand margin. Okay using Internet Explorer.

- Chryssi troubleshooting, 41 posts so far, a litany!

- If resolved, drastically prune thread, cite problem and
solution. If no solution, ask mods to delete entire thread.

* Finding Server for Outlook for Al (W98) - Sometimes
it can't be found. ...... Wait a while after booting up W98!

* Multiple Accounts - Pete finds he has to run Adaware and Spybot in each account to successfully clean.

* Voice-Changer Software (requested by visitor gefter)
http://www.audio4fun.com/voice-changer.htm

* Superantispyware - Pete trying it out. Likes it. 45-minute quick scan

* Spybot - Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster - Still the best per Rich. Not really free, donations requested and deserved!

* KH visitors who insist on immediate attention and
answer - just tell them to WIPE AND LOAD!:)

* Banking by Computer vs Phone

- Lina still squeamish about computer-banking. Security, risk
of crash, has only one computer.

- New telephone-banking system by Lina's bank quickly changed after complaints. Was insisting on verbal confirmation of account, pin, and Social Security numbers for each transaction and request!

- Elliot has had only one problem with computer banking in 3 years, not bank's fault.

* Desktop Icons Turned White

- NC3QA's 4-year old desktop.

- Desktop icons turned white. IE icon is blue. Start, Programs, etc, normal. Can't access web site, blocked. FF also white.

- Win Patrol kept popping up. Did System Restore. WP stopped.
Icons still white.

- Couldn't create another shortcut.

- Using Ewido, Adaware SE Personal, SpywareBlaster, Spybot,
Nod 32. Eliminated CrapCleaner.

- Something messed up host file?

- Use Process Explorer to see what's running. Process Explorer will show everything that is running: Download it from sysinternals.

.- Check great KH post by fleamailman (Spring clean the comp)
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3835

- If clean install necessary check this:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

- Clean install is major task if you have a lot of programs (Pete).

NC3QA, please let us know how you resolve this!

*How to Change Drive Letters (Visitor net_devil86)

- Visitor left before Photolady could suggest: Why not just swap the jumpers on both drives and reconnect the D drive on the end of the cable?

* Wifi (Visitor WarningMustBe18- He thinks we're a lot nicer than the PcTech chatroom)-

- Wants to get it free, but it's illegal to piggy-back, because in essence you are stealing.

- Wonders about "AirSnort." Curious, Lina just googled and found
this: Wireless Networks in Big Trouble
http://www.wired.com/news/wireless/0,1382,46187,00.html

*Black Computer Screen (Visitor ohene's) - Samsung monitor, 3-year old desktop.
Desktop completely black, can only see mouse icon. Will try another monitor, and hopefully, get back to us.

*The HP Laptop Bandwagon
- Dale asked for opinions on HP6000Z Notebook, and optional hardware:
- nvidia Go 6150 graphics chip is ok for general computing.
- nVidia Go 7200 "dedicated" graphics card for casual gaming and needed to run Aero feature in Vista.
- the latest PC Card slots are for the new "expresscards" and are not backwards compatible with old PC cards

There were one or two other topics way over my head that I could not keep up with.

Drop in and visit us next week, same time (Wednesday, 9 p.m.), same chatroom (KH Computer Help Desk).

Ciao, Lina

*Edit: See Photolady's comment in quote below:

Once again, such a nice job by Lina or summarizing what
went on during the 3 hours (typical) of Paltak session.

Folks, she really does capture the most of what goes on
during these sessions. Great job Lina! I'm super impressed!

Thanks, Pete.

To all: remember, I'm open to suggestions, constructive
criticisms, etc.

Sorry, but often some of the oral as well as text discussion
is above my head. Some discussion on the same topic is
carried on similtaneously in oral and written form. If I
were more tech-savvy, I'd be able to better integrate them.
(BTW, that's why I ask you to pick a font size/color which
differs from that used by others......there's a method to my
madness.)

You'd be surprised how much I learn and retain by doing
these summaries!!

There's nothing to be sorry about Lina. You do a great job with the summary.:clap2:

Thanks Lina. I haven't been able to join Wednesday nights for quite awhile. I enjoy reading your recap each week. It is so good it almost makes me feel I was there.

June, there's nothing like being there, especially for the
things I deliberately omit!

And here are just a few of he things I just can't capture in
print:

- Pete's enthusiasm

- Rob Cohan's deep, assertive but soothing voice

- Al Dom's weak defense of W98 and enthusiasm
for Nod32

- Lawrence's joshing and his flirtatious, enchanting
Australian accent

- Vivienne's sweet voice

Hope you can join us soon, June. Take care.

I missed your review by a few days, and obviously missed this part of the chat session:

How about that! Thanks, Photolady. Will correct that in the Wednesday
night summary and see if I mentioned it in another post.

Well, evidently, I'm in the same boat as some others in regards to email notifications as I didn't receive one about this post of yours. But you're welcome for the solution to Everest.

So what did you actually decide about C# as opposed to C++?

So what did you actually decide about C# as opposed to C++?

Tortanick, there was no discussion of C# as opposed
to C++.

If you would like to discuss C# as opposed to C++,
why not think about starting a new thread on the
subject?

Visitor corabica00 asked in the text box,
"Anyone interested in C# programming?"

Pi rules typed: "A bit, I learned C++ for a
competition last year."

Visitor asked again, but I think he left before Pi soon
replied, "Do you have a question regarding it? Or do
you just want to talk about it?"

Some visitors expect everything to stop when they
appear. They want the mic immediately and don't
want any competition in the text box. We try.
Their loss!
