Need to transfer files directly from my Desktop [XP Home] to a Laptop [XP Pro], last and only time I have ever used a crossover cable for this was years ago and I simply forgot how I did it, searched the net but can't find a step by step, help?

Others will help you better, but basically connect the crossover cable to both machines and give each an IP address. I've used 192.168.0.1 on one machine and 192.168.0.2 on the other.

That should get them connected. So now you need to set up sharing. This is where I usually have trouble. I usually end up logging into one machine using an account that's already on the machine.

In pre-XP, I think you right click Network Neighborhood and choose TCP/IP.

In XP, Control Panels/ Network Connections/ R-click on Local Area Connection - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and go to Properties.

Tried that before but I think a step or steps are missing here and I am wondering if it has to do with my Desktop pc being wireless? SHouldn't be because I diabled the wireless connection. As far as I can remember, the procedure should be to turn off both pcs, connect the crossover cable, fire up both pc's then both pc's should recognize each other, the client pc then shows just like another drive or folder, it was that simple but that is not happening here, what is very strange is, I can't find a step by step tutorial over the net for this.

I don't think I even did that with XP, I just connected the two comps and used the connection wizzard where I think it was during doing it that it asked me what did I want to share(files, printers, internet access, etc.) I remember that it was easy.

Do you have simple file sharing enabled on both PCs?

For file sharing to work, the "remote" user needs an account on the
"server" machine. Easiest way around this is Simple File Sharing (which
uses the Guest account), or make accounts on both machines that have the
same username and password.

If you still can't get it working, run the Network Setup Wizzard, that'll
make sure all necessary services and settings are intialized for file
sharing.

This is why windows should have a SSH server. None of this mess with setting up shareing, just log in remotely and grab files.

in both PCs go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > "Ur Network Card's Properties", and then double click 'TCP/IP settings'

Can any of you guys tell me if you see 'TCP/IP Settings' where this tutorial suggest? I don't see it on either of my machines.

Thats the wrong place. In network connections Right click on the icon that corrisponds to your cross over cable, propoties, then TCP/IP will be their.

Note it will probobly be called local area connection

That's what I did following the rest of his instructions but nothing, I am wondering if the cable is NOT a crossover cable? This is a manufactured Yellow cat5 cable and when I line up both end connectors, the wires are in exact sequence but it does have the words "Patch Cable" included in the writing on the Yellow jacket?

Mike,

You do NOT have a crossover cable. The ends would not be the same - thus the "crossover" designation.

I make crossovers all the time wihen I need them - but then the hardware is not "cheap" and you can buy a pre-made crossover for $10.00 to $15.00 at your local Radio Shack.

Please see this post Dan

I have other cables that are designed differently so maybe I am mixing this thing up? Please check that thread and let me know?

Don't bother Dan, looks like I was really getting mixed up, Compusimple was reffring to a "straight thru" cable NOT being a crossover cable, I misread his post it seems. Ok so now I'll try the other cables.

Ok, found 2 cables which should be the crossover cables and I am now seeing the name of the other pc in that pc's workgroup but I am seeing only the name of my pc on my machine and only the name of the other pc on that pc, help?
