update SAN FRANCISCO--Intel has built a prototype of a processor with 80 cores that can perform a trillion floating-point operations per second. ...
*Damn! and I just finished the dual core machine!

Processor, memory may marry in future computers

On Tuesday, Intel showed off an 80-core processor at its developer forum taking place in San Francisco this week and one of the prominent features of the chip is that each core is connected directly to a 256MB memory chip through a technology called Through Silicon Vias, or TSV.
The memory wedded to the processor cores could constitute the entire memory needed for a computer
*80 X 256 sticks ... sounds a bit expensive
These ridiculously fast processors don't really impress me. And considering 99% of the population only use their computers for basic tasks, these processors are overkill.
What would impress me, is to have a cpu that isn't lightening fast and only needs a heatsink for heat dissipation. Or a heatsink with an inaudible fan.
Even more impressive would be to ditch dinosaur hard drives and have everything stored on a solid state device. Imagine how fast that would be! Boot time would be under 5 seconds, programs, tasks, and windows would open instantaneously. Now that would be sweet.

You can get rid of fans allready. Water cooling :)
I like the idea of sealed computers, no dust can get in or out the case, water pipes go outside to deposit heat, even the DVD drives are in a seprate compartment with the wires going back to the main case.
As for solid state, that can be done, just costs a fortune :)
