At 11:49 pm, only Dan and I were listed as in attendance, but I think Dan must have fallen asleep.... .... I shouted into the microphone, but could not wake him up.....story of my life? Sorry we did not get to say good night, Dan.
WHO WAS THERE
KH MEMBERS - Lina, sweet Vivvienne, Vince ( Spawn), Doug, flirtatious Lawrence (he only shows up when Vivvienne does), rbob (kern), Rich (his dog graduated from obedience school!), N3, Elliot, Dan (the party pooper), and Seth.
VISITORS - Chris_Vlado_, yemene inusa, Whos_got_ the_ Pepsi, Kra-z-slim, and Geforce_7900GTX (impressed with our chatroom and forum, likes "meaty problems").
COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS
** STATUS OF VIVVIENNE'S ONGOING CPU PROBLEM - works okay now, Doug said to check if Windows Firewall is disabled.
** SLIPSTREAMING
- Program that integrates the later updates as in SP-2; this avoids many problems with some boards.
- W-xp and SP-2 can be integrated to make a new CD that is XP-SP-2 status
** DIALUP- PALTALK AUDIO PROBLEMS
- The guys spent a lot of time trying to help visitor yemene inusa with two problems. One was Paltalk audio problem -- voice breaking up.
- Advice: Go to Pal Talk help forums. You can change some settings and maybe get an improvement.
- Some of the guys had Paltalk audio problems with dialup until they got broadband. Rich said no problem when he had dialup, problem when he had satellite.
** GETTING RID OF COOKIES IN IE
- Visitor yemene inusa wanted to delete cookies from his laptop.
- Rich: Why bother? Leave your cookies alone they save you so much time.
- I guess Doug and Rob decided it would not hurt anything and struggled to get yemene inusa to understand how to do it. Took him a while to find Tools > Internet Options. (Sounds like me 5-6 years ago!) Then he finally understood "When the window for Internet Options opens, look for a box marked DELETE COOKIES and click that." Kudos to Doug and Rob for their empathy, courtesy, and patience!
- Rich suggested another route: Why not set browser not to accept cookies too? That suggestion got lost. Just as well. Lord knows how long it would have taken yemene inusa to accomplish that!
** HOW TO GET PAST HARD DRIVE PASSWORD ON CURRENT HARD DRIVE?
- Asked by visitor Whos_got_the_Pepsi. Dell Inspiron 2650.
- If a bios password, he can lose it by removing battery for a while (Elliot).
- Use Madboot Disk, a password crasher, on Geek web site. Madboot has a password cracker, not sure if it will do a hard drive (Lawrence).
- Long thread in text box. I can't figure out if Pepsi finally found the battery under the keyboard membrane (Dan's suggestion) and removed it or if he used Madboot Disk. Whatever he tried, it worked. Pepsi was a happy camper!
- Again, kudos to our gurus!
** WHAT CAUSES COMPUTER TO REBOOT, GIVE A BOOT FAILURE?
- Asked by visitor Kra-z-slim.
- Rich: Check http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php (SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures).
- Kra-z-slim ran SpeedFan. 2668 rpm (OK), temp1 -89c, HDO 82C, temp3 -65c.
- I did a brief brb, tried to but couldn't follow the audio. All I saw in the text box was "can of air," so I assume Kra-z-slim was told to clean out the gook and cobwebs from his cpu.
** LINA'S YAHOO MAIL PROBLEM
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3715
- Chatroom consensus: cropped email righthand margins were not caused by resolution or java, two things I'm reluctant to fool with.
- Lawrence thought it could be a problem with font, but I did nothing new with fonts in Firefox or Yahoo.
- Still not resolved. I think I'll close the thread and hit the "UNsolved button." (Inside joke. On the forum we have discussed adding a "Solved Button.")
** DESKTOP ICONS TURNED WHITE (N3's problem discussed last week)
- N3 had to resort to a complete reformat.
- Reformat, Service Pack-2, motherboard drivers, Windows Updates, then antivirus software (Rich).
- SP-2 has most of drivers. You can send for free SP-2 CD or go to web site.
- NO to update bios -- only if problem.
** FIRE TUNE (tunes Mozilla Firefox)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/firetune.html
** MISSING SPEAKER ICON
- Visitor CHRIS_VLADO_ had no speaker icon in speaker tray, no sound.
- Click "add new hardware" in control panel. Windows will look for hardware change. If it finds new hardware, Windows will install drivers if it has them or ask you for driver disk (Rob)
- CHRIS_VLADO_ left to reboot. As far as I know he never checked back in.
** WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS
- Two of our gurus confessed (or bragged?) that they turned off a stubborn computer that would not respond, KICKED it, then turned it back on. Bingo!
- Warning: Only as a last resort, at your own risk, and with your own computer!
** LINUX
- New Puppy Version 2.10
- Lawrence says, "Avoid"!! Not properly tested before release. (Did they collaborate with Microsoft?)
OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED
** STEVE IRWIN, DECEASED "CROCODILE HUNTER"
- Steve was buried in his beloved zoo.
- An Australian man who says Steve Irwin shaped his love for reptiles plans to feed the placenta from his newborn son to his pet goannas to bring the family closer to lizards. http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2006/09/26/man_plans_to_feed_placenta_to_goannas/
We wondered if this would cause the goannas to want to eat humans instead of their usual fare. Don't mess with Mother Nature!
This led to brief (thank God) discussion of cannibalism. Ugh!
** ACCENTS
- Vvivvienne and Lawrence think Americans all sound alike. (Now THAT may not be a politically correct statement!)
- Rich has lost his "Noo Yaawk" accent and says so has Lina.
- Vince revealed a charming slight Southern drawl, Louisiana French, he asserts. It's a conscious effort to speak in proper manner.
** GLOBAL WARMING - Happening in Australia for Lawrence (el Niņo, buildings, etc)
but not in Northeast USA for Doug.
** DEALING WITH THE SICK
- 911 operators, rescue squads, medical professionals sadly find it difficult not to eventually become callous.
- Few hospital and nursing-home personnel seem to care. Callousness, too much paper work, incompetence, and ___ ___ ___ (fill in the blanks).
** FAHRENHEIT VS CELSIUS
- Lawrence said it was 27 degrees Celsius in Australia. Vivvienne said that meant 78 degrees Fahrenheit -- double Celsius, take away 10%, add 32. Good estimate, off only 2.6 degrees.
- For the easy way, do it online (thanks, Doug!):
http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.htm
** SCRAPPLE
- Like pretzels with mustard, scrapple is a Philadelphia specialty.
- Scrapple descends from PA Dutch sausage which descends from German sausage-making.
- Just don't ask what's in it today -- ground up this and that with some spices.
- Purchased as a refrigerated firm rectangular loaf which is then sliced and pan-fried on both sides. (Lazy me cooks it in the toaster oven on a lightly greased tray.)
Come join us next week. Sometimes no one present has expertise on a subject brought forth by visitors (i.e., radius or voip server administrators). You may be just the guy or gal to wow them!
Take care, ciao,
