The award for the most horrible service ever goes to Verizon. I selected their DSL package because it was half the price of Comcast's cable service. ...
*Tale of woe...
Comcast customer service is actually extremely good these days...

I wonder if this is one of the experiences in life where you ask yourself „why me?" How are your experiences with Verizon?
I think this guy had an unusually bad experience.
In my experience with many verizon installations, the hardware arrives
within 7 days of ordering the service online. The worse part is having to
wait another week or so for the DSL turn on date. I always found the
telephone tech support to be friendly and helpful.
If I had the power to make any changes at Verizon, I'd change things
such that the DSL service is turned on *before* the customer receives
the hardware. I'd also see to it that the customer receives their
logon name and password in written form along with the hardware.
This would speed up the installation and not require you to install
or run any special software if you knew how to setup the modem
yourself.
Only had 2 bad experiences with Verizon DSL. 1.) Where the hardware
arrived on time but power supply was defective. Verizon shipped a new
power supply and it was received within a few days. 2.) Where the
DSL led on the modem would not light steady. Tech support did
something on their end that fixed the problem.
Otherwise, all good experiences with Verizon
DSL over the past 2 years.
I noticed that their installation software keeps improving.
Last time I used it, version 7.3 ran totally from the CD
and no software was actually installed to the PC.
I'm a big fan of the 768 DSL which I feel suits most people's
needs if they download less than 500mb per month or don't
otherwise need a super fast connection. I believe it's Verizon's
$14.95/month deal that knocked the hell out of AOL over the
past year and brought many dial-up users to a high speed
connection.

When FIOS was installed at my place, I had the connection and logins the same day. No waiting.
