A pocket full of USB sticks loaded with MP3s to play on my MP3 player in the car which has replaced CDs. Much larger inventory. Faster to burn. Don't disintigrate in the heat of the car. Don't jam in the cd player.
A U3 stick with FF and my bookmarks.

a list of favorites urls,
a list of prearranged cans for replies
a bunch of mp3
and then I am OK for half an hour's free computer usage in the library

I think I'll use mine for both personal and computer-related things. So far I have a utility software folder, but there's only EVEREST, .NET 2.0 and a malware folder. In the malware folder I have a ton of removal tools, links to online scans, trial and free removal software, etc.
If I ever start getting less homework I'll add some tutorials, canned speeches, explanations, etc.
I also use MS's SyncToy (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E0FC1154-C975-4814-9649-CCE41AF06EB7&displaylang=en) to synchronize my school files between my USB drive and hard drive.
A U3 stick with FF and my bookmarks.
That's what I just got-1 GB Kingston w/ U3 for only $25. :)

thanks I have downloaded sync toy, since I have been using briefcase.
what about stand alone stuff, like
foxitreader
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
precessexplorer
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
system specs
http://www.alexnolan.net/software/sysspec.htm
drive manager
http://www.alexnolan.net/software/driveman.htm
magicjellybean
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
agreed, the real installed stuff is better but at if one wants the do a quick check, they are easy to use because one doesn't waste time installing them.
also I prefer foxit to adrobe because it opens quicker being simpler.

I believe there is a FoxIt Reader for U3, and I'll probably install that when I get the time. I'm still looking for useful software to include on my flash drive to save time while at a customer's house. Those are some good links to get started, thanks! I'll probably include most of the software available on sysinternals such as Process Explorer.

I wonder if I am the only person to add a little bell, because when I curing comps I sometimes forget either that it is attached, for example to the laptop when looking for the sn number or where it can be taken like in the shop where I was, for the same reason I never attach my house keys to a USB key.

You could use it to store passwords. I have a stand alone version of RoboForm on one USB drive. I can use the USB drive on any PC and it will run RoboForm and insert my id and passwords on select web pages.

It doesn't seem to be stand alone since I had to install it, is one supposed to install it directly to the key then?

There is a special kind called RoboForm2Go. There are instructions on their site. My U3 Kingston drive came with it and it's usually $40 USD, but Kingston customers get 1/2 off. I'll probably buy it later and use it with U3 Firefox.

Pi rules, thanks, that explains it then.
Another idea, probably because I don't know the correct way, is to make a control panel on your key, so that if you are locked out of taskmgr, or msconfig, desk, etc., you can go through the USB key, of course only when repairing a comp that is, sounds grand but it is only making a folder in the key and putting their shortcuts inside.

Sometimes malware blocks access to certain files like the Task Manager, regedit, etc. Is that what you are referring to? If so, I don't think shortcuts would work, but it is a good idea. I think that Kelly's Korner (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm) has some fixes for it. Otherwise you could download a 3rd party registry editor and edit the registry values to enable access (although if you don't remove the malware they'll be right back).
