Hip, Hip, Hooray! KH now has a working spell-check.
I hit the spell-check button in error. What a nice surprise. Thank you, Adam (Smokey)! .... :clap2:

Ooops! Is this a "beta" spell-check? Did not catch typo (questoin).

We were 3d in the Paltalk computer chatrooms most of the night.

Those on the US east coast kept listening for thunder storms, and some had to leave abruptly. Rob Cohan, visitor The Rock_99, and Lina closed
shop at 12:57 am. ....

Tony, Kern (rbob), and Pi, we missed you! Hope all is well.

Thanks for remembering to use different fonts/colors. The text box
looked like a Christmas tree--it was easier to follow threads!

WHO WAS THERE

- KH Members: Lina, Doug (what's cooking?), Vince, Photolady (hope
you and your computer/mic are feeling better and we can finally
hear your lovely voice again next week), Rich, Pete (glad you could
join us!), Lawrence, Elliot, Vivvienne, Dan, Al, N3, Rob Cohan

Visitors Who Chimed In: intel-pentium4, taygury (he asked: "i need a crak 'serial number' could you help?" Dan suggested, "111111111" --- taygury was bounced from the room), Maddog43_ (he didn't bite), tina6503, MistyDawn, dezzyj, Coyote, The Rock_99 (a chiropractor / computer repairman), The Right_ Stuff, watiti_com (he wanted us to check his web site, guys said probably spam or worse, he left).

COMPUTER TOPICS DISCUSSED

**ACRONIS (Vince) - dynamic drive instead of basic drive; load on dynamic volume, worried about system volume.

**NEW STORAGE SYSTEM (Lawrence) - Zettabyte by Sun. www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/intro/ No one in the chatroom ever heard of it.

**ANOTHER GOOD ANTIVIRUS (in Lawrence's opinion) - AVIRA. Lawrence finds it "rally good" and free. http://www.free-av.com/ The paid version includes other malware protection.

**MULTIPLE PRINTER INSTALLATION (Elliot)

**STAPLER/STAPLING QUESTIONS (Pete)

- Lawrence: Good stapler can be expensive. Put cable in double plastic tube and staple it on. Pete: Afraid to miss. Doug: Don't miss! Vince: Use clips with nails.

- Pete found his stapler. Rich has one.
http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Products/Arrow/Arrow-T59-Stapler.htm

**AVG SECURITY SUITE - Rich so impressed, he has become
a reseller.

**COMPUTER WORK IN A MILITARY INSTALLATION (Pete)

**W98 - Al wanted some help, and of course he got teased.
Computer hangs up when he logs off. Too fast, can't find
out what's hanging up. Scanreg /fix.

**ROOT KITS

- Lawrence thought they were contraceptives. :behindsofa:

- You can get a root kit via a download. You invite a root kit in. It adds code to a legitimate file; code then does nasty things without your knowledge.

- Al: Why can't Nod32, Kaspersky, get rid of a root kit? Not a virus. Deep in operating system. No signature profile.

-Root kit regenerates itself, steals information, can disable AV, hijack home page, pop-ups, worse than trojan. Modifies OS files, keeps coming back.
.

**HOW TO VISIT DUBIOUS SITES, IF YOU MUST - use a restricted "safe surfer" user with dl and everything turned off, create a user with very limited privileges.

**FAT32 TO NTFS IN WINDOWS XP (MadDog43) -
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.php

**NEW LINUX (Lawrence) - Gentoo Linux Version 2006.1

**HEAD SETS - Dan spent $319 for head set for his precious motorcycle. Opinions differed on whether cheap or more expensive ones are better.

NON-COMPUTER TOPICS DISCUSSED

- A little joshing and innocent, tongue-in-cheek flirting. Liquor and beverages (favorites: Johnny Walker Black Label, Haig and Haig Pinch, Chiva, American Kentucky Sour Mash, Scotch, Irish Whiskey, Vodka and Cranberry Tonics, Colt 45, Bourbon, .......and water!).

- Watches. Some people can't wear them because of their magnetic field. Lawrence told us about a guy in a bar who bet that his watch was indestructable. When he left it on the counter and went to the
men's room, someone whacked it.....won the bet, but it cost him $80 for a new meat cleaver (he was a butcher).

- Cooking. Doug was taught by an Italian master chef, and does ALL the
cooking in his home ..... Vivvienne immediately decided she liked Doug. Maybe we could use a Cooking Forum in KH. What the heck, we have everything else!

- (After midnight) Aromatherapy, oils which cure almost anything, 5th cranial nerve paralysis, and the sex life of a cockroach (just kidding).

Sorry to be so late with this summary--late start, busy day.

See/hear you next week, Wednesday night, 9 pm until ......?

I missed page 5 of my handwritten notes.

MORE COMPUTER SUBJECTS DISCUSSED

**FOREIGN BLOGS - Visitor The Rock_99
suggested you use a woman's name for foreign blogs. They can be nasty to men, but are always nice to women!

**FIXING A HARD DRIVE

- The Rock_99: Buy cheap xxx (I think it was another hard drive, not sure) on Ebay and use it to fix other hard drive. (Rock said he'll return next week....maybe he can
clarify this. Too complicated for me. .... :noidea:)

- Put bad hard drive in Ziploc bag in freezer for 24 hours
(That's how you may be able to get a "cold start.":) )

** PRINTER CARTRIDGES

- Printers are showing cartridges as empty when they are
not! There's a class action suit.

- For cartridge refill instructions: http://oddparts.com/

- Tips/tricks to refill cartridges (see what you missed
if you weren't in our chatroom?)

That's all.....I hope. Good night!

Lina:

Thank you!! You do such a fantastic job. I so appreciate the time and the effort it takes!

I would like to make two suggestions:

1. Can it possibly be started earlier so that I can sometimes stay to the finish? Is seven o'clock way too early?

2. Can we have a Doug's Corner Forum? Cooking would have to be an allowed subject on that Forum. :-)

Elliott:

You'll be missed next week.

My pleasure!

Let's see what others think. However, at 7 pm EST, Doug may still be cooking dinner . Working moms and dads may be doing laundry :washing: or helping their children with homework, and our gurus may still be reformatting infested computers :smash: at a client's home.

You're right, Viviennne. A Doug's Corner Forum would be more appropriate than the Cooking Forum I mentioned......his vast knowledge and expertise are not limited to cooking and computers.:hail:

Vivienne, we (Lawrence included) enjoy your presence in the chatroom
however brief it may be.

Sorry I missed it; I'm OK, just was a little stressed. I had to work for 4 hours after school then rush to get an essay finished by the next day. :dizzy: I had to work 5 days this week and squeeze in a paper, essay, and two tests + online work--test, quiz, homework, but I somehow managed to get it done. :) At least my next paycheck will be larger than usual.
"i need a crak 'serial number' could you help?" Dan suggested, "111111111"
I wish I could have been there.

I missed page 5 of my handwritten notes.
5 pages? Wow, that reminds me of some classes I've taken... Except when I take notes I can't always read them due to my horrible handwriting ;)

Hang in there, Pi. You remind me of our Administrator, Smokey (Alan). It will all be worth it in the long run. You'll be glad you did all this when you were young. I regret not going to college fresh out of high school, even if it had to be evening college.

In my late 40's, I tried to juggle a fulltime job plus parttime editing/typing
jobs at home, evening college, seven kids, and one husband. It all took its toll,
and I had to quit college and my job, going on disability at age 50.

Pi replied: 5 pages? Wow, that reminds me of some classes I've taken... Except when I take notes I can't always read them due to my horrible handwriting Same here--lousy handwriting. And it's hard to be neat trying to keep up with simultaneous verbal and text threads on the same subject. I really should brush up on shorthand skills, but at my age that's easier said than done--even if my mind could keep up, my fingers/hand sometimes can't. I used to take notes in shorthand during evening college classes. Transcribing them was a way for me to review, and
my fellow students always asked for copies of my transcribed notes.:)

Pi, your parents must be proud of you. You are hope for the future of
our country. :yo:

Hi Lina

Let's see what others think. However, at 7 pm EST, Doug may still be cooking dinner . Working moms and dads may be doing laundry :washing: or helping their children with homework, and our gurus may still be reformatting infested computers :smash: at a client's home.

This is so. Maybe 8? 8:30? 8:59 ? :-)

It's awesome how much he knows about so many subjects!! Lawrence, as well, amazes me with his wealth of knowledge. Actually you *all* awe me! :-)

We have Smokey (Adam) to thank for all those
fixed and animated icons. :hail:

I wish I knew how to alphabetize the icons (there are much higher priorities for Adam and his helpers). It would save me a lot of time and enable me to quickly choose the most appropriate icons. A picture is worth a thousand words.
