I added the entry
127.0.0.1 www.advertising.paltalk.com (http://www.advertising.paltalk.com) and 127.0.0.1 advertising.paltalk.com to my hosts file, and I am still receiving the PalTalk advertisements using my black nickname. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
AL

That only pertains to paltalk banner ads (http://www.americaslastdays.com/paltalk.htm). This link lists another solution also.
Is this what you refer to?

Using a third world OS, unsupported by anyone anymore?
What happened to the semi-confirmed rumor you were moving into a new PC?

Do you have XP, BM? :eyebrows:

Try going to Start > Run > %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts > select Notepad from the list to open the file.

Yes, that's fine, BM. If you've never edited your HOSTS file before, that's the way it should look. If you want to start adding to your HOSTS file, I would recommend you start by using the MVPS (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt) HOSTS file. Just copy and paste over your HOSTS ;)

Al,

On a Win98 Machine, your hosts file should be in c:\windows, NOT in any subfolder per PalTalk discussion last night.

To know if it is working, go to the command prompt and type:
'Ping advertising.paltalk.com' and you should get 127.0.0.1. If not, your hosts file is NOT working.

Thanks,
AL

First, are you referring to the MVPS HOSTS file, BM? If so, how did you go about installing it (did you copy/paste entries from here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt) or did you download the .zip file?)?

Also, when you say you are directed to an empty HOSTS file, how are you opening the HOSTS file (Start > Run > %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or are you going to My Computer and locating it?)?

If you cannot find the HOSTS file, try doing an advanced search for "hosts"

Make sure you have added the entry

127.0.0.1 advertising.paltalk.com

to your HOSTS file (beneath the entry 127.0.0.1 localhost). If that entry is in your HOSTS file, you should get something similar to the attachment.
