Word Art as Vector Graphic

Anyone know how to save Word Art in Word or PowerPoint as a vector graphic?

Copy and paste converts to bit-mapped.

Save as Web Page, converts to gif.

Elsewhere suggests saving as PDF and then opening in Illustrator.

Maybe there's something in Illustrator that will do it.
