I see at least one "hosed" system a day using Crap Cleaner:

"fix" issues? It should not be necessary to backup before using a hard drive cleaner BM. That should be as safe as milk!

I go back to what I said some time ago. I used CCleaner once. It failed me - hosed the system - and I never tried it again.

BM it is not primarily a reg cleaner and is not billed that way. As such I never noticed it has those reg clean settings so that I blmae myself for. It is a hard drive cleaner....

Where is the reg cleaner setting in Ccleaner? Is it
Cleaner Settings > Applications > Windows > RegEdit?
If so, should RegEdit be unchecked?

I only used Crap Cleaner one time. After that I removed it. It's too risky in my opinion. I'd rather use other cleaning methods that don't risk deleting important files and screwing up my PC.

trouble is I see quite a few malware removal forums still using it in their steps before posting a hjt log, it just so tempting to think that pruning the reg is cleaning the comp.

Rich, what is your opinion on other drive cleaners, such as CleanUp! (http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/) and ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/)?

Ray,
Atf seems to just do temp files and internet cache, easier to do clean.exe in command box without adding program. Cleanup I never heard of before but just downloaded and ran it, I love it. It does the things that are safe, offers trial run with only advice of what to remove...I think this one is fine.

OK on closer look thanks but no thanks...to take out 3.5 meg Cleanup took out my Excite home page on all but sea Monkey(which it obviously doesn't know about because it didn't cut the cache either), took out my saved addresses for directions in mapquest, and all my logons to all forums so in reality it did nothing of any value. But the good news is it also hosed nothing. So now I can waste 20 minutes putting all that back in.

10-24-2006, 10:33 AM
yes that is the problem with using cleaners, they remove the stuff because it is there, the history and the cookies are sometimes helping me, but if I know something is wrong then I would rather have everything gone and start afresh so I think of it like a sping clean to do once in a while
mylanta
10-24-2006, 11:03 AM
I so much disagree flea...a crap cleaner isn't ever to fix something wrong, it is to optimize. Optimizing hardly includes removing all the good things that save time. And the funny thing is I looked at all it would remove, and noe of what I mentioned was listed, though removed anyway. To take out 3.5 meg which is nothing? And it made all kinds of work for me.

I don't use CCleaner but CleanUp and have no problems what so ever.
I also have a batch file to run at finish and restart computer that removes all index.dat files before rebooting. Never lost anything. Lucky? Maybe.:)

Thanks, BM. Sometimes I move a window to the left so I can
keep track of what's in my taskbar on the right. That's why
I did not see Cleaner, Issues, Tools, and Options. Except for
unchecking Cookies, I've been using the default setting.
BTW, there's an updated version of CCleaner, V1.34.407. I
haven't used it yet. Had no problem whatsoever with the
earlier one.
Allow me to revise my question: What do you gurus suggest
unchecking in CCleaner to prevent it messing with the registry?
(I know, I know, Rich - don't use it. :) )

Lina:
My suggestion to you is to simply not open the Issues pane. This is the only way to prevent yourself from messing with the registry; however, if you would like to take an extra step to ensure you don't mess with anything, do the following:
1) Go to Start > Run > %ProgramFiles%\CCleaner
2) Right-click the file:
winreg.ini
3) Select "Delete"
4) Empty the Recycle Bin
Now there will be no selections in the Issues pane.

I suggest you uninstall it and instead go "Run," type in " clean.mgr.exe"
then hit enter.

Typed in clean.mgr.exe , but it did not
recognize it, with or without the quotes.
BTW, how much/what will "clean.mgr.exe" clean up?
Sounds good. I know when I go to Run, type in %temp%, I
get rid of a lot of stuff Ccleaner and Disk Cleanup don't
touch.
Waiting for your appraisal of ATF Cleaner.......although
Ccleaner looked safe but later screwed some of your
computers. Don't know until someone like you uses
such software on multiple machines. :hail:

Lina, try cleanmgr.exe without the period. What is opening is Disk Cleanup, which is located in Accessories > System Tools in the Start menu.
BTW, how much/what will "clean.mgr.exe" clean up?
If you run cleanmgr.exe, you will see what the options are.
Waiting for your appraisal of ATF Cleaner
Here was Rich's response to ATF Cleaner earlier..."Atf seems to just do temp files and internet cache, easier to do clean.exe in command box without adding program." From this, Rich was saying that it would be better to simply use Windows' Disk Cleanup utility rather than installing an additional program.
Ccleaner looked safe but later screwed some of your
computers.
From my experience, main problems come from using the registry cleaner. See my previous post for information on how to "disable" that (you cannot actually disable the registry cleaner, although you can remove all selections from the Issues pane, making it impossible for CCleaner to "find" any problems in the registry in the first place.) Also, IMO, as long as you don't run CCleaner too often it is safe and you should be okay to use it.

Lina,
If you want to clean something, pick a closet....that program will sooner or later hose your system. With today's big hard drives, and I'll bet you have a 40 gb drive you are using 5 gb of, there is no reason to clean hard drives.
When we had 2.5 gb hard drives such things made sense. Want to defrag, fine. But beyond that, you are heading for disaster as you haven't reformatted in several years and sooner or later you will hose it for sure. you do realize you have experienced users who have hosed their systems with it?
mommalina
10-26-2006, 11:48 PM
Rich and Ray, I've made a decision. Will keep CCleaner
on my computer and only use it as a last resort if a
reformat is imminent.
Rich has a point. I have a lot of free space. My Computer
lists 47.4 GB free out of 55.8 GB. Why take the risk?
Thank you both very much!

Going back to my previous post, I thought I would share what I'm using to clear temp files: Pocket KillBox (http://killbox.net/)! If you go to Tools > Delete Temp Files, you can clear out lots of junk, including temporary internet files, temp files, cookies, Dr Watson dumps, the prefetch folder, recent items, history, and Sun Java cache, for multiple users.
