Hey folks,
I found someone that is willing to be a special guest speaker at
one of our Wednesday night PalTalk sessions. However, this person
would like to know how to run PalTalk on a Linux computer.

Please advise.
Thank you.

You need an emulator and run in through that.
If he allready has one setup for other windows apps it should be easy.
Paltalk won't work throught gaim like other IM's.

Dudeking, you could be a little more spesficic ;p

Dose it work in WINE?

[edit]: found this http://www.locohacker.net/Paltalk_Programs/Paltalk_Download/Gaim-pt_1.5.0_Paltalk_Linux_L197.html I think its a GAIM plugin that works with paltalk. couldn't find any mention of it elsewhere yet.

Right, I need some specific directions to hep this
person get PalTalk working on Linux. I know we have a
few experienced Linux users in the Paltalk sessions, I just
don't know whether they run Paltalk on Linux computers.

Sure, I believe the speaker would be Dianne Ursini or one of her
associates. I'm not exactly sure what her title is but she's involved
with the TAFusion Mepis group. I'll let you know when I find out more.

Do you have any specific topics or issues in mind that
you'd like to hear about? I'm hoping that this will begin
a series of talks on Linux and we can get multiple experts
from her organization to speak on various Linux issues.

First step is to get Dianne online with Paltalk and
introduce her to our group. Then we'll see if we can
set a date and a topic. Hopefully she will show up
tonight as a new visitor to our Paltalk session.

I've heard from true sources that some islamic persons bought PalTalk, because there was some 3000 christian members, arabic speaking, that critizised the Coran and Allah. Then they upgraded to a version that cannot be run on Linux, because they can't destroy systems like Linux, like they are doing frequently in Windows-systems, when people have a safe environment. This while PalTalk has an Linux-backend. I'm worried. Where are we going, concerning free communications. Can't we forbid religion? It's dangerous, now as before.

There is no basis to this whatsoever...I can't even find it as a bad rumor but I can show Paltalk has not been sold since it's beginnings.

We can ignore the ramblings of the earlier posting.

I BELIEVE I had Paltalk running in my Firefox browser on my ubuntu box a few months ago.

Your associate might try going to www.paltalk.com (http://www.paltalk.com) and joining in the rooms area

I can't test it on my machine since paltalk is already installed and it brings up that login box.

Dan, you would be correct. I spoke with paltalk when I was playing with Ubuntu. They said that you can run the web version in Firefox on Linux.

Good Aftenoon All, yes Paltalk Express will operate in a browser on a Linux System but the operation is dependent as to how well it works with the available processor and memory power.

Texting can be used relatively well on the later P3's but to get reasonable voice operation it is pretty "dodgy" even with a high-end P4 and fast cable.

There were plugins for Gaim (A native Linux communicating program) that allowed Paltalk Linux operation, but as far as I know they were made inoperative at least a year ago by a rewritten Paltalk.
The word was this was purposely done, something along the lines of advertising not working in Linux, and some copyright contravention, so it appears interest in trying to write another plugin to operate Paltalk waned, and that energy by those programmers was directed at other programs natural to Linux which are becoming popular and may eventually draw Paltalk potential userbase.

As far as the Gaim (or now Pigin) program is concerned it works pretty well in Text but I haven't used it with audio or video and have no knowledge of it's operation in those areas.

Paltalk Express requires Java and other items in the machine and in Linux Machines really is about as reliable and useful as a deckhand on a submerged submarine!

With the increasing acceptance, popularity and use of Linux systems generally, plus the fiscal possibilities involved, Paltalk may revise acceptance for Linux.
Sooner the better.

Actually not being able to use Paltalk is really the only reason I still have any Windows machines operating.
This is supported by the simple fact that I love running all the malware scans which I don't do with my linux systems, it is so exciting having that expectation of viral invasion and spending time trying to determine what has been damaged, which is missing with Linux systems.

It is rather strange using a computer without having to consider malware scans and stuff and just doing things without all those expensive support software and associated items.
A bit like swimming with lead weights hanging off you as against swimming and enjoying the water!

Edit. It is quite common for Linux users to be proud that they have Paltalk running in Linux, but when questioned as to how they have achieved this it is most often using a Windows Emulator or virtual windows program, and even then they generally have odd things that don't operate properly.
Having to run an emulator to run some dodgy windows program seems to me to be slightly crazy! (degree dependent relativity)

Cheers, Lawrence.
