Wow! Quite a session last night! Lots of attendees in all the
computer chatrooms - we fluctuated between 3d and 4th. We
closed shop at 1:04 am. Acronis debate postponed again,
maybe next week.

WHO WAS THERE

KH MEMBERS: Lina, Doug, Larry (qldit), Dizz (welcome back!),
Photolady (she disappeared early, hope all is okay), Vivienne,
Elliot (our PhotoShop expert), Rich, rbob (kern), DaBear2 (Lou),
Pete, Al, Fred.

VISITORS WHO PARTICIPATED: cyberthugg4 (typed url for his
web site which offered "porn passes" among other things and
abruptly left), Jordan10000, Wireless_cellphone, Coyote, talk to
me everything, Cupidd, Computerwiz_350, OhioSteve, Norvana, miokool.

COMPUTER-RELATED DISCUSSIONS

RENAME OUR CHATROOM? - It's now listed as KH Computer
Help Desk. To emphasize that we meet once a week
Wednesday nights, Pete suggested we include Wednesday
Night in the title. What do you think?

- Wed. Nite KH Computer Help Desk?
- Wednesday Night KH Computer Help Desk?
- KH Computer Help Desk (Wed. nites)?
- KH Computer Help Desk (Wednesday nights)?

We'd be interested in your suggestions. Thanks.

VISTA - Vista and XP software is not likely to be compatible.
Doug is not excited about Vista, will wait. Rich suggests
putting Vista on a separate hard drive. Photolady
dual-booting it with XP, not impressed.

VERIZON DSL 768 VS 3.0

- 768 costs $14.95 for new customer, $17.95 for those
who switch from more expensive 3.0 speed. (I don't think
that includes taxes.)

- 3.0 costs $29.95 ($31.75 after taxes) with one-year
commitment.

- Rob switched from 3.0 to 768, sees little difference
because he does not download large files.

- Lina considering downgrading from 3.0 to 768, Dizz
from Comcast to DSL

- DSL is the "big boy" in Europe.

"FREE" WIRELESS CONNECTIONS - Doug says thousands
at work; Rich 4-5 at home.

FIREWALLS - Zone Alarm won't install on Dizz's computer.
Vivienne likes AVG. Doug has used Zone Alarm for
years on all machines with no problem. Guest Jordan
thinks no need for firewall with SP2 and good configuration
on the router.

CD ROM - Visitor talk2 me everything couldn't see his cd
drive in his computer. Coyote suggested several things,
but then advised System Restore. Talk2 me everything
didn't get back to us to tell us if it worked (I hate that!),

LAPTOP IN THE FREEZER?

- Visitor Cupidd asked if he could put his 8-month old HP
Pavilion zv6000 XP Home laptop in the freezer if it got too slow.
It gets really hot:flame:, so to cool it down, he puts it in the freezer!

- Rich: If it's a Dell would probably help (joke! don't do
it!). Hard drive in Ziplock bag in freezer excellent data
recovery technique but not for a laptop.

- Check vents for dust, take it in for checkup under
warranty suggested.

SQL HELP WANTED - No one could help
visitor Wireless_Cellphone in linked servers.

HOST FILES - Something many of us have to learn
about. Do a search; there's plenty in the forum.
By blocking in host file, you'll never see an ad.

LINUX

- Rich tried newest Puppy. Forget it with wireless.

- Coyote used wireless on Linux, ndiswrapper. Rich
had ndiswrapper and could not get it to access to
wireless driver.

- Larry has been playing around with it, but don't ask.
Actually the Puppy chaps are introducing all the wireless
stuff in the next kernel.

WINDOW DRIVER UPDATES

- Rich has seen video driver updates hose system,
modem updates as well coming from Windows
Updates. DaBear never had problem, update for
wireless nic seemed to fix the slowness problem
computer was having.

- Vivienne thinks it may be good idea to see what
Windows Update says you need, then go to the
manufacturer's web site.

USB PORTS FOR PRINTERS - A computer with usb 1
port will hook up to a new printer with a usb 2.0.

SPAM

- For Verizon mail, go to your Verizon homepage, email
section, log in to your email account, under "email
options" section, enable Spam Detector (Rob).

- Pete will post other instructions in our forum.

WORKING INSIDE COMPUTER CASE - Unplug cord
from wall. Use anti-static wrist strap.

VERIZON INTERNET SECURITY SUITE - $4.95 a month.
http://www22.verizon.com/forhomedsl/channels/dsl/micro/security_suite/
(Pete had a client who wanted this installed.)

BIT DEFENDER VS NOD32 - Many clients are
unable to master process of buying Nod32 after trial
period. Nod takes too long to send license key after
payment; BitDefender does it immediately. Nod requires
uninstall of trial, BitDefender just upgrades it. When
will Nod32 wise up and make it easy to upgrade from
trial version?

BEING A SELLER FOR SOFTWARE - not profitable
except paid to install it.

AUDIO XTRACT - http://www.audioxtract.com/
Audio Xtract is the revolutionary new software that lets you
receive and record thousands of streaming internet radio
stations on your PC - just like a VCR.

PHOTOSHOP CS

- Visitor Norvana lost pallets. Found reset pallets and got
them back, thanks to Fred.

- The GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation
Program, freely distributed piece of software suitable for
such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and
image retouching. Lawrence thinks it's great in Linux but
nasty in Windows.

- Photo Element does 99% of Photo Shop, good for
amateurs (Photo Shop for advanced) per Fred.

- Easy Steps - Barnes & Nobles. $9.95, recommended
by Fred.

- Rich told tale of a photo of 25 people (adults and
children) doctored to have all 25 with the same head! LOL

HOW TO AVOID OR GET RID OF BAD CLIENTS

- Pete's has dealt with the mentally-challenged, A.D.D.s,
calls with stupid questions, and even a terrible ammonia
smell in a client's home! (Wondered if he'd be attacked.)

- Rich talks to them on the phone first. Requests $50
advance payment. To get rid of them, he'll tell them he
doesn't work on W98 or suggest they buy a new computer.

FIREFOX 2.0. - It's available. Rich didn't like mail icon
add-on. Went back to old version.

FIREFOX VS SEAMONKEY BROWSERS - major
differences (Pete's web site):
http://www.htworkshop.com/freeinfo_firefox_vs_seamonkey.htm

MULTIPLE SCANS - Pete thinks some malware has to be
cleaned out in order for a second scan to pick up more.
He runs the same one twice as well as other scans.

NON-TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS

STEVE IRWIN (deceased Crocodile Man) - His zoo is about
five miles from Lawrence. Dizz thought Irwin would lose a
hand some day but not his life.

MEATS - Kangaroo meat looks nice, but it's tough when
cooked. Dizz said BJ's sells ostrich meat (red, dark, lean)
and buffalo meat (lean and delicious). Photolady likes goat.
Doug says, "people are ok but they really require
seasoning." :)

STOCK MARKET - Buy on rumor, sell on news!

LINA'S REFRIGERATOR - Lawrence confirmed that a
defective thermostat is the problem. (He's a jack of all trades!)

THE LAWRENCE BELLY DANCE CONCERT -- Lawrence did
not have to take his blood pressure pills watching belly dancers.
He needed them after an encounter with a scary lady appointed
the boss. He quit, and never got to watch the belly dancers!

Long chatroom session, long summary - and I
know I did not get it all.

Until next week, ciao,

Lina

And what was the question about SQL?

Thge took out the browser link to email program...man that is annoying so I went back to 1.07 right away. That is my favorite feature of FF, and works just like IE.

And what was the question about SQL?

It never went further than "ny SQL help?" and "hi all.. ny one
with SQL knowledge here (need lil help in Linked servers plz)."

Dan replied, "sorry no sql assistance from me - just working on
mysql to do some php stuff." No one with that expertise seemed
to be available at the time. ... :noidea:

Unfortunately, trying to follow the rapid text and mic input, (full
house, busy night), I missed an opportunity to direct the visitor
to our forum. ... :frown:

Maybe you could have helped him, Tortanick? Your knowledge
amazes me, and I would not be surprised if you knew a lot
about SQL! ...:hail:

If I click an E-mail address in 1.5.6 I open thunderbird. Can't see how you control that though. Why not ask the Mozillazine forum?

Awww thanks Lina. And I have used MySQL over the summer when I setup a mailserver, but I don't know much. but on the other hand SQL is about 5% running the software and 95% knowing how to design databases do linking servers shouldn't be a perticularly hard task.

Not what I am referring to...to open an email program, ypou can add a link to the toolbard to do so as exists in IE. In FF you can choose whatever email program you want to open anything, but it will lead you to your default email program.

I just changed it, what I started thinking is more Paltalkers may join us that night when they see the "Wednesday" in the title. Get ready we will get the "wackos" though also Admins!

Now you need to keep one of your spare computers keep the room opened and 'locked' until Wednesday. That would be interesting.
