I read that Vista has a new file format. No longer NTFS, but something similar. Has anyone heard this? If so, are we going to have to get updated drive applications, i.e. Disk Director, True Image, etc.?

To me it looks very different, but from what I can tell, it feels similar to XP.
It's huge. Took about 10GB. But amazingly, it loads fast and shuts down fast.
It seems to *work* fast. Firefox opens in a blink.
This Ultimate (top line) version will reportedly be quite spendy. I've heard $269-$329 US.
I wonder how it will all play out.

For the record NTFS is a file system not a file format.
And a poor File system at that.

Nop doubt Vista will be the same as xp when you have overloaded it with programs and filled up your harddrive to bursting point

I did a quick Google on the supbject today and found a couple of items of interest:

Surendra Verma, Development Manager on the Vista Kernel team, digs into Vista's new Transactional File System whith Charles Torre. TxF, as it is referred to internally, is a new kernel construct that is part of an updated Vista NTFS.

WinFS was determined to be a little too ambitions of a project to be released in Longhorn (I predict that we will see WinFS show up in Longhorn Vista Service Pack 2). That doesn’t mean that we are still stuck with the same old NTFS file system though. Longhorn’s file system is more intelligent than the Windows XP file system.
(One of these days I may learn to quote and add links)
