I have an older Compaq laptop. I have a friend who has a less older Toshiba. Can I take the PCMCIA ethernet card out of the Compaq and use it in the Toshiba? Thanks.

It should work as long as there are drivers available for the Toshiba.

Also a better subject line would solicit more responses. Something like "PCMCIA ethnernet card for laptop" seems better that "Can I do this? which is really vague.

Probably.
FYI, there are three types of PC Cards- Type I, II, and III - all have the same length and width and use the same 68-pin connector, but differ in thickness - I- 3.3, II- 5.0, and III- 10.5 millimeters.
Ethernet Cards are usually Type II.
A thinner card can be used in a thicker slot, but a thicker card can not be used in a thinner slot.
The only problem you may have is drivers.
