i have a compaq 2000 desk pro 300mhz with 128 ram...am having problems with windows me and was wondering about the stabillity diffference. will be switching to 98se and use the puter mostly for games, viewing live webcams, using my cam and im-ing on yahoo. will there be a significant difference in the stability. would like any and all opinions...also have been using different website to fix windows problems but just wanted to ask this question here. what would be the difference where these issues are concerned???(seth)??? ;)

Windows ME is infamous for instability so you'll probobly get an improvemnet. Windows 2000 is also worth considering though.

Some of the others will probobly have more details. I was allready on XP when I started getting good with computers.

Personally, I've seen no difference in the stability between W98 and ME. However, I don't do games or webcams. If you're going to use USB devices on the W98SE machine, you'll have to search for more drivers.

The computer's specifications/operating system, will make no difference on your IM'ing, as IM'ing doesn't require any "power".

The performance of basic internet gaming is much more dependent on your internet speed as opposed to your system specs. Regardless, you can't change your processor speed, and a ram upgrade for your particular computer would not only be impractical, but you wouldn't see any significant performance increase.

On a bigger picture, 98 can handle system resources much better than Millennium. In theory, this means that 98 is more stable than Me and requires less reboots to operate efficiently. In practice however, system stability and resource management, is far more dependent on the users computer knowledge. More specifically, it's more dependent on the users downloading and maintenance habits.

In addition, Me is said to be less compatible with hardware. This may have been true at the time of release, however I've yet to see hardware in which the manufacturer had a driver for 98, but not Me.

If the average user is having software problems, then changing the operating system is only a temporary solution as the same problems will return regardless of the OS. This is because virtually all software problems aren't created by the operating system. Rather, they're caused by a lack of computer knowledge/maintenance on the part of the user.

With all that being said, a computer technician will find little difference in performance between 98 and Me. For the average user however, 98 is a better bet as it will handle the system resources more effectively than Millennium.

I am so glad others understand this issue...personally I see no difference between Me and 98 and would dispose of any pc that can only do either, which clearly this pc cannot do anyway. I mean if you want to keep it, why not up the ram and then put a real OS on it.

based on your usage, 98SE or ME makes little difference, but you would see a noticable increase in performance by adding at least another 128mb of ram. as i recall that pc maxes out at 384mb.

I respectfully disagree.

Both Pete and I have conducted tests which show that the average user will not benefit from more than 128 MB of ram on a 9x system. In fact, we both found that most users won't even benefit beyond 64 Mb of ram.

Diane,

You've been having a number of problems with that computer. It's getting old, and probably isn't going to last much longer. Don't bother with a ram upgrade for it.

based on her usage, ME would be her best choice given ME is geared for multimedia. that said, and the fact that she is using system restore, as I recall approx 96mb would be used for the OS, which leaves 30mb for programs. add gaming, wmp and broadband and the pc slows to a crawl with 128mb.

But since you mention she is having additional problem with the pc, and given its age, heres where we agree- its time for a new pc.

Rob,

I've never heard of System Restore using that much memory, nor have I experienced such.

Good point on ME over 98 for multimedia. Diane just purchased this computer fairly recently and has been encountering a number of problems. Most seem to be software related. She doesn't have any OS cd's, so yesterday I mailed her 98SE, Me, and Memtest. I've recommended that she run an Me over the top install as opposed to a clean 98 install. The main reason for this (other than the multimedia), is that Diane's only tech support is online, so if there is a problem with the 98 install, or a dial up driver problem, then she won't have any access to the internet and tech support.

Do you agree with that reasoning?

More so than any other component, memory speeds up your computer. Windows XP requires a minimum 128 meg but most users recommend a minimum 256 meg for the OS alone.

Exactly. In discussing the issue with another user, I did mention that the dial up driver should be downloaded and saved to a floppy or cd before such work takes place.

Thanks.

For improved stability, I highly recommend 98lite to install 98SE or ME. Go here: http://www.litepc.com/

There is a free version and a pro version.

Alternately, throw another 128 at it and give XP a shot.

the computer is much too old to pay $100 for XP and add more memory to it...would be better off saving for a new computer with XP installed on it...however i do not forsee that happpening any time soon so i would have to agree that an over the top install would probably be my best choice...

didnt mean for this to be a debate...just wanted to know the advantages and diadvantages in the comparison of both OS...i have received the disks and am ready to do the install...i need to download all programs off of my computer before i attempt this task..
.seth please contact me when you have time to help with the install...

Diane,

Before we proceed with the OTT install, use Belarc Advisor to obtain your product key. Write it down and keep it safe.

Did the tech install a network card when you got high speed, or did you already have one? Does the computer have a burner and/or a floppy drive?

BTW-Look close at the front of the cd drive. If it say's CDRW or "ReWritable", then it's a burner.

Seth

Continued from above...

Right click on a blank part of the desktop and create a new folder. Copy and paste the contents of the My Documents folder (as well as any important info from other folders) into the new folder.

The OTT install shouldn't have any affect on the My Documents folder, nor have I ever seen or heard of it do so. However, it's a good precaution to take.

You're getting way ahead of yourself with needless tasks.

The only product key you need to write down (not pasted into a folder), is the product key for Windows Me. It will be needed for the OTT install.

The OTT install doesn't have any affect on your program files or personal information. However, there is a very slight chance that the Documents folder may be be deleted. So, like I said before, right click on the desktop and create a new folder. Copy and paste any of your personal files (like Works documents, pictures, etc) into that folder.

When that is completed, post back and we can continue.

All monitor drivers are built into the operating system. All I need you to do is save a copy of the network card on the desktop. The belarc report will name your network card. Post back with the name of it, then I'll get you to download it's driver to a new folder on your desktop. After that, I'll give you instructions for the install. BTW-Do you have a printer?

thank you kern for asking about my progress...i am sorry to say that the OTT did not go very well.after having to do numerous things that did not work i have finally gotten the OTT done...

the OTT did not go as expected...i had numerous errors while doing the install...there seemed to be only 3 problems that i had to overcome...i had to uninstall my anti virus while attempting the OTT...when i was able to come online i had a problem installing it for reasons that will remain behind closed doors...so i installed a different anti-virus program which seems to be working just fine...

also during the setup i got an error stating:::

a device attatched to the system is not functioning:::

system\jdbgmgr.exe...yet the system seems to be running better and without errors...everything is working properly...

i do ,however have a major problem in the works...when i restart my computer i get a black screen which has an errror on it...maybe you can help me with this...i will state the error exactly as it appears...it says:::

device file in System.INI is damaged..it may be needed to run windows...you may need to run windows set up again..if this is part of a software package then you may need to reinstall the software...

it then lists the error...C:\windows\system\JAVASUP.VXD

bm looked this file up for me and found a site where i can download the JAVASUP.VXD OR repair it...my question being .....do i repair the file or do i download the whole package?????

any help that you can give me with this would be wonderful...thank you in advance...:)

A repair install can corrupt certain third party applications.

Go to add/remove programs and remove the entries that say "Java...". Restart the computer and then go here (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp) to install the latest version of Java.

Well, remove the new version of Java and go here (https://sdlc2e.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=AF3F6884095CD78AFC506 32ABEDA22A8)to get Java 5/2. The reinstall of 5/2 may correct the error as well.
