Sorry this summary is so late. I shut down computer because of
severe wind and thunderstorms today.

Some rather in-depth conversations about computers took place
in our chatroom last night. We closed shortly after midnight.
Everyone was talked/typed out and sleepy except for night owl
Fred who had just arrived.

WHO WAS THERE

KH MEMBERS - Lina, Rich, Dan, N3, Al, Pete, Fred,
Annie (welcome back!)

PARTICIPATING VISITORS - bountyhunter_rich, Kingbee 45,
smile_with_ur_eyez, i3egohan (pulled our chain for a while,
wanted to "download" a hard drive. Rich bounced him before
i3egohan saw gullible Lina's invitation in the text box to join our
KH forum), and finally, Xx DASHTAWI xX ("Any one who
can help me to open blocked sites like crack sites?")

NOTE: (PALTALK UPGRADE)

- If you are not on Paltalk 8.5 or their beta 9.0, you soon will not
be able to get on Paltalk. So upgrade before our next session! 9.0
version is troublesome, so download the 8.5 version.

- Audio much better, gui the same.

COMPUTER-RELATED DISCUSSIONS

WINDOWS UPDATES - to remove checkmark for IE-7
(if you don't want to install that), use Custom, not Express.

OPEN OFFICE - Dan doesn't like it, Al and Pete do. Pete uses it
for clients for whom he has reformatted and who do not have MS
Office CD. Open Office just has the basics, which suffice for his
clients.

BUILDING NEW COMPUTER

- Rich proposed to Dan that they get together with John Campi
and oversee the assembling of his new computer during a
Paltalk session!

- Lina suggested video. Frugal, penny-pinching Dan and Al
vehemently screamed, "NO WAY!" (Her ears are still ringing.)

REFORMAT MYSTERY (Jv16)

- After reformatting, N3 noticed Jv16 was still on his computer.
He had not reinstalled it, did not back up anything, did not delete
partition, reformatted without partitioning, just reformatted with
XP CD.

- Dan: There are two repairs - one at the beginning and one after
the F8 accept agreement

- Lina: Do a search and see what else may be on the computer
that was not reinstalled.

- Final consensus: Computer working fine, why sweat it?..... but
we are still a little curious.

HOST FILE IN XP? - Dan, No. Rich and Pete, Yes. Fred,
optional, don't have to have one, in ...\ect folder.

OPERA BROWSER - Can only send email in plain text (turnoff
for Rich)

FIREWALLS

- Jetico is complete crap (Rich - who else?)
- Norton decimated Drive Image and Sygate.
- AVG has no option for firewall only.

FAILURE OF NOD32 TO UPDATE - This happened to Pete;
he'll ask the Nod32 people. Shame you left early, Pete. Fred
Freehold, a Nod32 expert and reseller, arrived after you left
last night. You can post that question on our forum for him.

LINUX GUEST SPEAKER - Pete has not forgotten, will contact
her again. Perhaps no interest, or a Linux and Paltalk problem.

ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol)

- smile_with_ur_eyez asked, "icmp...my internet provider trying
to see if i'm online?" Yes, but no problem. Not malware or threat.

- Dan: ICMP supports packets containing error, control, and
informational messages. PING command, for example, uses
ICMP to test an Internet connection.

ZONE ALARM ISSUE

smile_with_ur_eyez asked, "Is it normal for a window to pop up
for paltalk saying paltalk may be monitoring my activities?"
(She's using Zone Alarm.)

Dan: yes - because Paltalk is interacting with the operation.

CLEANING OUT STARTUP (N3 wanted to clean out startup)

- Rich advised N3: run > msconfig > ok > startup. Check/uncheck
as follows:

* dkikon is diskeeper, check
* nwiz is nvidia and not necessary, uncheck
* WinPatrol, check
* ctfon, uncheck
* nvcpl, uncheck

CHANGING COMPUTER'S NAME (smile_with_ur_eyez
bought her uncle's computer)

- Rich: Below is the registry fix for ownership:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS
NT/CURRENT VERSION .................................

On the right, look for Registered Owner and Registered
Organization ... Right-click, and pick modify on either one to
change the value.

NEW IE-7 AND FIREFOX 2.0 - N3 uninstalled IE-7, didn't like it.
Lina empathizes, she's trying to get used to Firefox 2.0
(hard to teach an old dog new tricks!).

TWO AVS ON COMPUTER (this seems to come up every week) -
Two installed AVs are problematic even if one is disabled!
Use one installed AV, and run an online AV periodically to double-check.

BUY NEW COMPUTER NOW OR WAIT?

- By December 31, if you have not bought a new computer with
XP, only those with Vista installed will be available. If your
computer dies after that, your only choice for some time will be
Vista -- before it has shaken out all its quirks and problems.

- A lot of laptops will be available to purchase at reduced costs
next month due to the delay bringing Vista to market.

FUNCTIONS OF CPU FANS - to keep machine cooler but not faster.

HYPNOSIS ON LINE - Visitor Kingbee_45 says he is starting a
G-rated public room called "Get Hypnotized Online." ..... hey, do
you think we can trick Al into being hypnotized to give up his
W98 relic and buy a new computer?

NON-TECH DISCUSSIONS

COOKING (Dan threatened to leave if we bored him with cooking
discussions, but we managed to sneak in a few comments
in the text box while the gurus were yapping in cyberspace. )

- Annie: takes me an hour to cook instant rice.
- N3: I also burn jello.

TOYS FOR KIDS

- Fred: "HS Classmate of mine, Steve Caney, wrote a book, The
Toy Book, 20 years ago and just published another, the Ultimate
Toy Book. Look him up on Amazon."

Join us next week ..... Want your msconfig cleaned out? Our KH
startup doctors will be there, ready to help you perform the surgery.

Until next Wednesday night, :grouphug:

Correction:
NOD32 failed to update but the next day it fixed itself.
Suspect the NOD32 servers were down temporarilly which
I've NEVER seen before. No need to ask the NOD32 people
about this issue. HOWEVER, I do want to contact the NOD32
people about some other things related to procedures for
purchasing NOD32. I'll make a new post for that.

Sorry I missed yet another session, I had to work and then do homework.

There is a host file in XP, which I would recommend filling with unreputable sites. You can download a text file (there is a good one here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)) and transfer the contents with Notepad. It is located in %systemroot%\System 32\drivers\etc in XP I believe. %systemroot% is C:\Windows or whatever folder Windows is installed in. I had a large one but Spy Sweeper didn't like it.

Awesome. In my basement we have an Apple II GS (http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=71) that's older than I am and that my dad still uses sometimes. That processor is under 5 MHz! We also have a "Sider (http://www.apple2.org.za/gswv/USA2WUG/FOUNDING.MEMBERS/HOME.PAGES/EDHEL/sider/)" that weighs about 15 lbs. and has a whole 10 MB.
