View Full Version : Spell Checker Needed to Help w/Searching
PeteF

It occurred to me today that we need to have proper
spelling on the forums, otherwise, how will we ever be able to
SEARCH successfully if the key words we are searching for
are misspelled so often? :D
It looks like we are getting closer to making the spell checker
work here at HK Forums, but it's still not working properly.
I'm wondering why most vBulletin Forums don't have the
spell checker working. Must be difficult to setup.
Anyone know why?

I also use ieSpell and find that it integrates very well with vBulletin ... and works great! Unfortunately, it is designed for IE. I see that Firefox 2.0 has a new integrated spell checker. Older versions of Firefox are not as fortunate.
I'm not sure what the exact issue with vB Spell is but it appears that there may be a problem loading its dictionary. It remains on top of our to-do list.

Rich, do you know the statistics of percentage per
browser that people are using the access KH?
My website provides those stats. I use AwStats to deterrmine
which browsers are being used to vist my site.
Here's an example...

What Web analysis tool do you guys use?
What are your stats showing?

No I don't Pete but what I meant is between IE Spell check and FF spell checker, that catches almost everyone.

Ok, I just installed ieSpell so lets see how it works.
Works pretty good for basic spelling. I see it spell checks ALL TEXT in
the edit box which means the quoted text can get changed as well.
This could be a good and a bad thing.
Relying upon the user's browser to have a spell checker is not going to
be as effective as having the built in spell checker. Let's see what happens.
I'm still curious to know why the vBulletin spell checker is so
difficult to implement. As I had stated, most vBulletin systems
don't have it working propely.

Pete I actually think using the browser spell checker is better because it happens instantaneously and you can see it as you write it..so no other switch needs to be done to check spelling. I was one of the principal complainers and now I would not waste the time trying to fix it as I would never bother with it anymore anyway..

Maybe we should have a poll to find out what everyone is using !!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is it? FF's is built in, IE can only get it as an add-on.
Any one that uses an out of date browser is just asking for all kinds of nasties so it makes no difference that older versions of FF didn't.

Rich, instant alert for misspelling eliminates one more chance
that I will be involuntarily logged out (still have not solved that
problem).
The FF spell-checker doesn't suggest alternatives like in
Outlook Express, but it deserves an Oscar .... best thing
since sliced bread, and you don't have to install it
separately!

With the Firefox 2.0 Spell Checker, if you place the cursor on an underlined item and right click your mouse, you do get a list of alternatives.

BM, that's a possibility, but the real test for determining if the
problem is solved or not is to monitor the posts and see if the
quantity of mispelled words has decreased.

Pete, are you using IE-Spell or FF spell-checker? If so,
check "mispelled." .. :)
Seriously, except for our dyslexic members, I think there has
been a reduction of misspelled words since the advent of IE
and FF spell-checkers.
Our dyslexic members may have a problem using
spell-checkers. For others, it just may be laziness.
I do wish the FF red underline alert for misspelled words was
darker.

I have no spell-checker because I use Seamonkey.
I assume that Seamonkey will soon have a spell checker too.
