Looooong night! I arrived close to 9 pm. The room was
already open, and Doug, Rob (kern) and some visitors were
chatting away. Closed up shop at 1:10 am at my request.
Could have gone longer!

WHO AS THERE

KH MEMBERS: Lina, Rob (kern), Lawrence, Rich, N3, Elliot, Doug, Pete, Al, Fred, and Annie.
Vivienne, Photolady, and Dan: we missed you. Hope Vivienne
has solved her cable problem, that Photolady is well, and that
Dan will learn to tolerate cooking/food talk when no computer
topics are offered for discussion (all you have to do, Dan, is ask a
computer question -- we'll "help" you, honest!):)

PARTICIPATING VISITORS: Lonly_Boy-99, malkster007,
Coyote, campijr, davenext_3, (again, he wanted to be an
administrator), Domdar, googleitbub, mstew2006 (he
typed that all he wanted was a mic check, but there was
too much going on in the text box and on audio--sadly, we
never got to him), Angelic_wings, angeleyes71-1, lonely kitty_1_1

COMPUTER-RELATED DISCUSSIONS

GETTING YOUR EX OFF YOUR COMPUTER (Visitor Angeleyes) -
Two administators (she and ex-boyfriend), needs his password,
password in Windows. Final proposed solution: SIW (System
Information for Windows) http://www.gtopala.com/

LINUX

- Puppy 2.12 came out three or four days ago. Lawrence is
ga-ga over it. Version 2.12, the 85 meg version, drivers
galore.

- Puppy linux has a nice media player that plays just
about anything.

PALTALK 8.5 OR 9? - Contrary to what visitor Davenext
(administrator wannabe) recommended, do NOT upgrade to
Paltalk 9, a beta version and full of bugs.

REINCARNATING DESKTOP COMPUTER COLLATERALLY
DAMAGED BY A FIRE

- Elliot's son had a devastating house fire.

- Dell computer full of soot and water; water formed scum,
smells horrible as it gets warm.

- Water, detergent, scrub. No Febreze (possible chemical
reaction).

- Network an image, and THEN work with machine. See
what you can do when you have an image? (Doug) ....
Lina was surprised that Doug did not advise Elliot to clean
out the computer with Chablis and vodka.

- Seriously, our deep regrets and best wishes to Elliot's son
and his family.

MAKE A BLUETOOTH-TO-PC CONNECTION (Fred) http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-3565-5-55-227492-444877-0-0-0-1

SOLUTION TO AL'S OUTLOOK EXPRESS PROBLEM - Al was having problems with the email in his OE inbox. So he deleted the inbox, rebooted, came back, and all is back to normal!

THUNDERBIRD BROWSER - Al wants to know how to add extensions -- anyone know?

PEGASUS EMAIL SYSTEM - does not have email import function.

CODEC - If you can't play certain Windows Media Player attachments you get in your email, try this (courtesy Doug Barrow): http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/KLite_Codec_Pack_Full/1094057842/3

K-Lite Codec Pack Full 2.80
Publisher's Description:

K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-Decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. This Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. You should be able to play all the popular movie formats and even some rare formats.
E-MULE - Visitor Malster asked and was told we don't recommend pirating software. P2P (peer-to-peer), is ok as long as one
downloads legit.

BULLGUARD, ANOTHER AV - recommended by Lawrence http://www.bullguard.com He was surprised to see Bullguard
being used on his new laptop by Medion, top-of-the-line software,
covers virus, spyware, and other malware.

NOD32

- A lengthy discussion took place with Freehold Fred
(a Nod32reseller) about how to get Nod32 to simplify the transition from trial version to paid version for the home user, Check here for an ongoing thread on this in our KH forum:
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4891

- Eset Nod32 forum:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15

- Eset support: http://www.eset.com/support/contact.php

COMPUTER REPAIR OBSOLETE? - Some views: Hackers always be one step ahead of AV developers. The end user will always be the weakest link, and there will always be ways to fool them into infecting themselves. Conquering malware is like exterminating terrorism. Like the War on Drugs and the War on Terror, the War on Malware will never be won.

SYSTEM RESTORE: Visitor Coyote describes it as "The greatest
program that never works." Lina's first computer, an Acer with
W98, had a Time Machine that never failed, must have used it over
200 times!

GOOD SPAM BLOCKER - http://keir.net/k9.html ,
recommended by Rob (kern), used by Al.

VISTA - Vista Home Premium, Media Center turns your pc into a glorified remote control.

NON-TECH DISCUSSIONS

NATIONAL SYMBOLS - US symbol, Eagle. Austrailian symbol, emu and kangaroo.

FAVORITE FOODS - Nathan hot dogs, White Castle
Hamburgers, tripe, cow's stomach, tongue (animal, not
human!), Vegemite, Tim-Tams, blintzes and kugal, and
fish heads (Fiji delicacy).

FAVORITE BOOZE - Amalthea Merlot and port, New Jersey
red wines

FIRST- AND SECOND-HAND SMOKE

- Business owner subjected his employees to a smoke-filled environment. After 15 years and probably second-hand smoking 4 packs a day, Rob left.
Later, when owner got lung cancer, he banned smoking from the office.

- Doug smokes (among other indulgences), and his home is his castle. In
HIS house, if you don't care to breathe it... you can leave anytime you want. Sign on his door: DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE DOG, BEWARE OWNER!

- Lawrence is smoking again. The cigars during his Fiji trip were too
much of a temptation.:frown:

PALTALK HALLOWEEN PARTY - N3 won a free new one-year green name for his "innovative" costume.

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. Until next week, :grouphug:

Looks like you all had a good time, wish my connection would have let me in Paltalk, but it's being erratic again. Right now I'm on dialup and it's faster than my high speed wireless. Wednesday night I didn't have a modem to install or I would have gone that way to get to you guys.

I see Davenext is persistant if nothing else. He keeps trying doesn't he. Maybe he hopes we'll forget who he is and let him be admin.

I will try to get there next week.

Hope you all got stuffed, :D with turkey that is.
