We tied for 4th and 3d place, and called it a "night" at about 1:24 in the morning! Much of this summary is from scrambled notes and my scrambled memory ..... I lost part of the text box rebooting because of audio problems and a lot more when Microsoft decided it had committed an error and had to close at 1:26 AM as I was copying the text box. :brick:

WHO WAS THERE
KH MEMBERS - Lina, Rob (kern), Lawrence (qldit - stands for
queensland!) , Dan, Photolady, Dizz, Rich, Larry (Casey), Pete,
John Campi, Pi (couldn't stay, homework), Fred ..... did I miss
anyone?

VISITORS WHO PARTICIPATED - Easternhorizon, settle111
(posted url for his ad twice and left!), smile_with_ur_eyez,
flipflop_22, Mhajer_Iraqi, Grandtheft_911

PALTALK PROFILES - Rich and I had upgraded to version 8.5.
Profiles were missing last week. They returned to show Rich
and I as 18-year old males! (Wow! ...that sex-change surgery
really rejuvenated me....by almost 60 years! .. ;) )

COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS

K9 SPAM FILTER - K9 is an email filtering application that
works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and
automatically classifies incoming emails as spam. Rich took it
out; slowed his units to a halt. Rob said it uses 300k memory,
works fine on his old k62.

ROOTKIT - Spybot removed one for Rich, but it kept returning; had
to do a restore True Image file.

RETURNING TO COMPUTER BUSINESS - Visitor Grandtheft_911
left the computer business a while back and wants to begin a
computer-repair business. He browses computer chatrooms,
listens, trying to refresh and upgrade his skills. Pete assured
him he came to the right place. We hope he'll join our forum
and become a regular during our chatroom sessions.

OUTSOURCING COMPUTER REPAIR

Can they outsource computer repair? We doubt it. In
Australia you can exchange a defective play station for a
repaired used one. Will the same be possible for ailing
computers? Users would still want hands-on computer repair
in their home or at a trusted repair shop. The average home
user would not know how or want to remove all personal
information before outsourcing it for repairs or exchange.

Perhaps someday a user could have an image of entire computer
on line and just send out an ailing computer for repair or exchange
.....but would we want our personal/financial information on line?
Or be without a computer for more than a day while waiting for
outsourced repair or exchange?

Afterthought: I wonder if we could rent a computer from
Rent-a-Center and download our online image? The rental
may not be affordable and malware-free.

COMPUTER FREEZE

Visitor Slingblade 2004's wireless desktop, XP SP2, satellite,
starts up and then freezes.

Possibilities: satellite needs resetting, improper ventilation,
or card out of place (card can easily be dislodged in thin
case).
.
Suggested: start with removing and reinstalling card and software.

INSTALLING DSL768, VERIZON TECH SUPPORT

Dizz's modem kept disconnecting, many hours on the phone with
courteous but exasperating Verizon tech support in India. Larry
says a decent tech guy would have taken over Dizz's computer and
set it up for him. Dizz is sending back DSL modem, going back to
reliable Comcast (8000 kpbs may not be overkill after all .. :) ).

Pete and Rich find Verizon installation CD often doesn't work.
They now just call Verizon, set up account, get password, and
do manual install..

Problem (besides tech support) may sometimes be
defective DSL installation CDs. Larry had two disks that
didn't work. Philippine tech guy seemed just there to put in
his time.

BROADBAND SPEEDS AND COSTS (APPROXIMATE)

John gets constant download speeds of 7 to 8 MBPS via
cable. Thinks $45 a month is worth it.

On hi-speed DSL, Rich gets 2800 on Firefox; IE slower.

Cable $48, FIOS will be $34, hi-speed DSL $31.75 (includes
tax), 768 DSL $14.95 (new customer) and $17.95, plus tax.

Lucky Dan gets FIOS Friday!

LINUX

Pete may try Puppy as perfect solution for W98 computer used
for not much more than email and some surfing. May have
problem hooking up printer.

Each time you load Linux CD, add to it and use it, you have a
bigger system.

Linux installation: The easiest way to do it is to partition your
drive to say, give Windows fifty megs, then have a ten gig
partition for say Kanotix, then a swap space of 500 megs, then
a space for Puppy Linux of say 2 gigs, and a swap space of 1 gig.
Load W-XP, then load Kanotix, then Load Puppy Linux, the
whole thing comes together under the Puppy Boot Loader and
slots together well.

REMOVAL OF LOOK2ME (SPYWARE) -
smile_with_ur_eyez wanted to know how to remove look2me.
www.majorgeeks.com and look for spyware tools; www.trendmicro.com;
also Ewido, another good spyware/malware and trojan remover.

NETWORKING QUESTION?

Smile asked: I know how to configure for a single ip or ip range.
If you want to add another ip range in addition to the one you
already have, do you just add another deny line under the first
deny??

Beyond our expertise. Sounds like a networking question. Post a
question on www.kickenhardware.net, and someone can help you
there.

MONITOR RESOLUTIONS

Photolady changed daughter's from 800 x 600 (had to scroll) to
1024x768; a lot better.

Rob and Photolady use trackball instead of mouse.

DXDIAG (DirectX Diagnostic Tool) - Tip from
visitor Flipflop.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/190900

Flipflop: acceleration adjustment for audio response; audio rough,
moved acceleration; run from command; see Accessories, System
Tools; tests sounds, video cards.

REAL PLAYER INSTALLATION PROBLEM

Visitor Mahjer-Iraqui has broadband, XP Home Professional,
unsuccessfully trying to install Real Player. Error message read
something like, "folder o/s os-common % real visualization."
Not in Add/Remove Programs. Do Search for "real."
Something remaining on computer. Download free jv16 Power
Tools, remove all "real."

If Real Player install still unsuccessful, try installing Real Alternative.

LIVE COMPUTER-BUILDING SESSION - John
Campi is interested. Maybe some day soon our gurus can do a
live, step-by-step presentation, as they build a computer.

NON-TECH DISCUSSIONS

- Vivian did not show up. We thought Lawrence was so upset
that he lost his voice.... but his computer or Paltalk audio was at fault.
However, when he finally got audio, his voice faltered and cracked intermittently throughout the night. ..

- History and current-events lesson on the Fiji Islands.

Until next week, happy holiday shopping.

Lina,

These summaries are a fantastic service and you do an EXCELLENT job. I bet you are learning a lot and somehow applying your nursing talents to this endeavor.

I thought last night's participants were exceptionally professional and I liked how you, Lina, got drop-ins, to grab the mic or otherwise ask their Q in the chat box.

Damn, if I wasn't curious about the Mhajer_Iraqi's orgins, but was afraid to ask.

Thanks, Fred! .. .. Last week's summary only got 33 hits, and
I began to wonder whether or not my efforts really help, inform,
or even amuse anyone!

I bet you are learning a lot and somehow applying your nursing talents to this endeavor.

I've learned a lot participating in the forum and chatroom and doing
the summary. It's like going to class, transcribing your notes.....and
giving many of your schoolmates a copy. .. :)

Nursing talents? Any of those were undoubtedly acquired by
having to diplomatically question and sometimes forcefully
challenge some medical diagnoses while briefly serving in the
military and raising my children. .. ;)

Matching chatroom conversation and text way above my head
probably employs skills I acquired when I used to edit engineering
correspondence for foreign engineers from Taiwan, Korea, India,
and Pakistan. They needed help with English grammar and nuance.
I had to ask so many dumb questions to ensure that I did not
inadvertently change what they meant to say! .... that probably
helped make me such a nit-picker.

I thought last night's participants were exceptionally professional and I liked how you, Lina, got drop-ins, to grab the mic or otherwise ask their Q in the chat box.

I'm for everyone's voice being heard, be it in a marriage, a large
family, schools, politics, and in our chatroom. I have an
affinity for foreigners, having worked with and for many who
were a hell of a lot smarter than I!

Damn, if I wasn't curious about the Mhajer_Iraqi's orgins, but was afraid to ask.

Me, too. Hopefully we made a friend for America :usa2: and
helped shatter any illusion he may have that we are all like the
"Ugly American." I'll be delighted if he returns next week to let
us know if he was finally able to install Real Player or if he had
to try Real Alternative as a last resort.

Thanks again, Fred. Glad you enjoyed the summary!

Just let me chime in with "job well done"....very professional and extremely informative. I would imagine those not there reading these should want to join us and it could be why our audience is increasing!

Lina - I also want to thank you for the minutes. It's informative and put together nicely. Being the Recording Secretary for a local computer user group, I know it involves much more work than it seems.

Thank you,

Lina:

I, too, would like to add my very sincere thanks for doing the summaries. They are great and they are accurate and fun to read. I love the KH meetings and am very disappointed when somthing happens and I can't join you. You guys have become almost like family - a place to learn, to laugh, to get to know you better and to be a better cook. :-) I highly recommend the KH evenings to all of you. Lina is as charming and nice there as she is on the Forum.

Lina, you're awesome. I hope to be there Wednesday - my fingers are crossed.
