OK, I like kubuntu probably because I don't understand it, my last install went well,20gb harddrive it installed, it recognised all the drivers, and I installed plugins to firefox and mp3, ah but the stumbling block was flv. files(streams) of which one has to have firefox it seems(konquorer doesn't support it I am told) long story short, I ended up with a few halfinstalled windows of adrobe flash on boot and then finnally it didn't boot at all.

I am trying to do everything afresh but the install goes from steps one to five but the last step is just hanging(select a disk, the hour glass and no choice of erase, manually or automatic) does this mean my harddrive is dying then I wonder, so giving up on the 20gb I am now installing a 6gb harddrive but seeing that the harddrive is so small I will need some help in uninstalling all the stuff this dell laptop does not need to gain space

the long term goals here are:
- being able to write notes
- listening to mp3
- internet
- viewing streams

and with the above now explained, my next post will be the questions of what to do next

I'm an Ex Ubuntu user and its a pain for viewing streams.
I used to for 2/3 months, and I got it to final play MP3 and WMA but I had a huge problem with flash and flv streams. Good Luck :)

I am onto a kubuntu site where they are helping me out, my goal as usual will be to record what I do in order to be able to redo it later, anyways I am really enjoying this as it is unknown, I will keep this thread posted as to how it goes, thanks

Glad to here your getting it sorted.
Might be an idea to post your recorded steps here, they would make a great guide.

thanks, yes I will report progress, it really is another world but I like languages so it feel great even if one feel very newbie

the long term goals here are:
- internet = firefox
- being able to write notes
- listening to mp3
- viewing streams
Of the above then, change of order, first I am trying to install firefox, which I am missing something because to neither the sudo su apt-get way, nor the add/remove programs way are working, anyway details to follow

also, I have been told that there really isn't much I can delete on the installation, anyway not to delete konquorer which was my idea as too many things depend on it.

Are you CRAZY! konquorer is not an internet browser, its the KDE file/folder browser, and the KDE web browser, and the KDE network browser (if Kubuntu has it typing smb:/ into the address bar will show you any windows shares on the network)

All in all its a beautiful program, but I still prefure firefox for web browsing.

[edit] that sounded a lot harsher than it was ment to, sorry.

so whats going wrong with firefox? maby I can help

thanks, your post is not taken badly, only no replies is taken badly, firefox is now working sweetly, I will post here when clearer the steps I am taking because I represent the typical xp user who has swapped to kubuntu, I imagine that the Mr.XP-user wants to hear mp3, see video streams from youtube, and play DVD with vlc, and being able to read his old XP urls in kubuntu settings, all things that I wish to put up in one or two posts here, which is where I will needs members to oversee because unlike XP I won't be able to see to my own faults if I miswrite something. btw the thread where I am working this out is this link
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=11862.0
but as you will see, it has the stuff but needs editing I will probably open a kubuntu section on my site too, I really like kubuntu since I feel that it is stable and can load it onto as many machines as I wish for free, open office works well too.
