Sorry I missed the 12/06/06 chatroom session. I
heard it was a great one!

This week's session lasted until about 1:00 AM, and we placed
third and fourth in computer chatrooms. Very few visitors
stopped by.

WHO WAS THERE

KH MEMBERS.......Lina, Rich, June, Lawrence, Elliot, Photolady,
Rob (kern), Fred, Dan, Seth.

VISITOR WHO CHIMED IN....... OhWhatNow
OhWhatNow opened his computer room, Bangalore Unlimited
Help Desk, and nobody showed up! Amiable, interesting,
computer-savvy. Hope he joins the forum and drops by the
chatroom regularly.

COMPUTER TOPICS DISCUSSED

WEB SITES RECOMMENDED DURING DISCUSSIONS

- Abstradome products
www.dposoft.net/
During last years we developed algorithms, now
implemented in our products. We offer absolutely new data
recovery software solutions. Repair damaged hard disk drives
and rescue your data with Abstradrome products!
- Puppy Linux
www.puppylinux.org/

LAPTOPS

- Rob probably going for the HP9000Z.....HP dropped the
price another $50.....HP's have treated him good so far....
the 5000z just went out of warranty without any problems
.....6000z has another 6 months.

- Rob was also looking at HP's business class laptops.
Word is they are "built tough".....magnesium alloy chassis. Rich
has a few clients with them and they do look really
sturdy.

- Rich thinks Asus laptops are serious junk....Rob says
they are pricey, custom-built, and reviews are positive....
Rich not convinced.

PROBLEM UPGRADING TO NEWER PALTALK VERSION

Photolady couldn't upgrade to newer free version. Trying
through the website didn't do it either. Rich suggested she use
File > download latest version. Worked!

CLEANING MONITOR SCREENS

- Instructions with Lina's new View Sonic 21.3-inch LCD
Digital Monitor are to only use a cloth dampened with water.

- Rich says he uses Bounty paper towel and Windex.

POWER OPTIONS - CPU

- Dan: I have a 5-hour shutdown.....Hibernate and standby have
nothing to do with the monitor.....Hibernate is for saving battery
life in the older notebooks......Today the processors shut down
or actually power down when no activity for a suspended time.

POWER OPTIONS - MONITOR

- Rich suggests 30 minutes for monitor.

- Dan: crt monitors had the burn-ins..... I have a crt that has the ole
Windows 98 tiger burned into it.....lcd and plasm don't have the "burn-in"
factor.

- Seth: Avoid a "cold" LCD shutdown and restart. Just let the LCD
idle......Dudes, think about it! Have you ever had a light bulb burn out
while it's on? No! It burns out when you first turn it on!--a cold restart!
....Don't turn off the monitor manually. Let it go into standby with the
computer settings. A low idle is much better than a cold shutdown and
restart.....An LCD monitor takes an insignificant amount of power, nothing
to even think about.....With LCD monitors, it doesn't matter what you do
(set it to automatically shut down after xx minutes or leave it
alone).... Don't worry about the power switch. When your computer shuts
down, stands by, or hibernates, the monitor will go into a standby mode.
That is fine..

- After talking to her son, Lina has decided to leave her
LCD monitor on all the time, with no standby or
hibernate, a 5-hour shutdown, and a blank Notepad
page manually put on screen as substitute screen
saver.

REVIVING LINA'S OLD CRT MONITOR (DEAD SCREEN)

- Lawrence: High voltage problem most likely, that will kill the
screen.

- Lesson learned by Lina:

1. Wiggle all connections from monitor to power strip and
tower.

2. Unplug and reinsert all connections from monitor to power
strip and tower.

3. Only after you try Steps 1 and 2, do you give the computer
a good bump with the ball of the hand or employ a more drastic
measure!

Lina missed unplugging and reinserting the connection from
monitor to tower, and she never thought of first wiggling all the
connections (suggestion by daughter's work IT man) ... it was
too late! Lina had already given the monitor a good whack with
a hammer to ensure an effective blow.

NON-TECH DISCUSSIONS

MUSIC DURING CHATROOM SESSION

- Fred's wife briefly sang and played the piano in the background,
practicing Christmas and Hanukkah (Jewish Festival of Lights or
Festival of Rededication) music for next day's holiday party . It
was not loud enough for us to really hear and enjoy. Fred, if you
guys are sober by then, we want an encore next Wednesday!
But only during a conversation lull -- Photolady said no music or
she would leave!

- Do we need new chatroom guidelines? ..... As usual, no politics
or religion. Dan leaves if we discuss food or cooking, even
during a lull in tech conversation. Photolady will leave if she
hears music.

THE METRIC SYSTEM

- Rob: USA will be going "metric" by 1980....we will also have a
base on the moon by 1990....and moving sidewalks.

- Fred: Give him a centimeter, he'll take a meter.... Rob
centimetered up to his 'puter in the middle of the night.

A PLEA BY SETH

I think someone asked Seth what he did for a living. He
replied, "A system engineer? Hell,
I'm just working toward the ability to stay high
all my life.....Lina, you've got to put that in
your notes!"

My pleasure, Seth .. :)

JUST SETH AND LINA

Everyone else had left except Seth and Lina. He had her
cornered and asked, "Are you ready for some deep psychology?"

Seth thinks perhaps KH needs a "General Debate" forum. .. .. He would
love to meet Lina there. They have had grammar
debates on the forum (use/used). Now he would like to discuss death!

Lina responded .. :playball: .. "I can assure you that I will ensure that I am insured
in case of death."

...and that is how the session ended.

Come join us next week....bring your computer problems
and expertise.....and don't forget your sense of humor!

OMG Lina. I can't believe you quoted me verbatim!

I don't know what I was thinking about the General Debate forum. KH already has the basement. Anyway, I've already started enough controversial debates:D.

BTW- I can diagnose and fix just about anything, but I still don't get the affect/effect thing:redface:. Wait a sec, I just remembered the PM. I'll check that out again.

Thanks for the briefing!

OMG Lina. I can't believe you quoted me verbatim!

Seth, the information you gave about LCD monitors was great! .. :hail: ..
Something would have been lost in the translation had I tried to
summarize or reword it!

I thought your comments were tongue-in-cheek, as were my responses!

For anyone who wonders: Seth mentioned confusing the words affect and effect.
He left before I could explain the differences, so I PM'd him:

affect is almost always a verb, rarely (obsolete) a noun, whereas effect can be either a verb or a noun.

I can effect (cause) a change which will affect you, and the subsequent effect would be disastrous.

BTW, Seth, you also mentioned something about there/their. If you are
interested, I'll share a gimmick on how to remember the differences
without going into the grammatical reasons.

As I said, all tongue-in-cheek. I hope you are not offended. .. :)

I see problems in typing on other forums where people confuse they are and there. Interesting this bit of grammar lessons, Lina, my husband had a problem distinguishing between brought and bought. When I said I bought him something, then handed it to him, he said I hadn't bought it, I brought it. :D No matter how many times I tried to explain the differences, he still said the same every time.

I know a lot of people who can't distinguish between Effect and Affect.

Btw, I'm glad it was your monitor and not you who was the reason you were not at chat. Since I missed the welcome back thread over a few days. Welcome Back!! ;)

Not in the least.

I don't recall saying I had a problem with there/their/they're though.

For example,

"They're going to their house where there will be lima beans and cud for all".

lima beans and cud I don't want to go to their house if they're regurgitating and feeding me their cud. :D I just couldn't resist that one Seth. LOL

Fair enough.

You can just have the lima beans:).

Now that I never noticed.

Its / it's are problematic for me. Every time
I type it's, I have to stop and check to make sure
I mean it is.

Sounds good Seth. I like Lima Beans. ;)

Lina, I had a journalism professor at college and its and it's was one of his pet peeves. If you didn't check your copy, he would fail your paper. No second chances with him.
