I know all the great comments on the Conroe, but.... How about one of these

or possibly the 4000+ (not dual core). What is most stable MB for the 4000+, or the other dual core?

Just looking at my budget. Thanks for any suggestions. Still running a P4 3.4.

Ok you need to watch out for NForce 4 chipset and dual core giving usb issues.
I would rather see you go to AM2 core and that gets you past all that with newer Nvidia chipsets and you do want Amd and Nvidia, let me be really clear about that.
I have had some luck with this board and socket 939:

But as for differences, I have this setup and I also have Conroe 6400 and frankly I can see no difference. For what the average user does, this will suffice fine and the price breaks on cpus are great. Try to get high enough where you get at least 1 meg cache though instead of 512, that is another reason you would be better off with Am2 series and it also is a current series. I think that means you need to go to at least 4800. The FX series are really cheap right now as well.

Both Intel and AMD have price cuts due in Jan.

MyLanta & DBarrow, thanks for the tips. Please understand that I don't know the diffs between AM2, etc. I was up to speed at the Northwood days, but have lost pace from there. AM2 is ??? And the board that I may want would be?
I do realize that Conroe is doing so very well. I wonder what the diff between AM2 and Conroe is? Is it major, or are the diffs small? Cost effective is good to think about here. And less brain damage is always good. Trying to buid the best box I can for the least $$$ replaceing (in use only) a P4 3.4. I will keep the P4 box, and bui;d a new one. Thanks again.... Patience is always appreciated. I assume that the AM2 is one of the links that I posted. Again, I'm trying to relate to the P4. Not dissatisfied, just still trying to learn, and play. Thanks.

I assume that this is one of the AM2's you were talking about.

I am running the AMD 4000 on an Abit KN8 939 board without any trouble. I also am running the AMD 5000 on an Abit KN9-SLi AM2 board. Just don't forget when you go AM2,which I also recommend, you must buy memory that will work with your board. Right now NewEgg has a great deal on the AMD X2 5200 for $287 which is the best price I have seen yet. I did have trouble with the KN9-SLI board and getting the OCZ memory to work with it but have since remedied that.

Guys, could you elaborate on the RAM that is available if I decide to go with an Intel Core 2 Duo chip? I would stress the pc by doing video work occasionally, and would like to know the best RAM period (and the best RAM for the $). Would RAM available for the Intel chip/mobo be on par with the AMD dual core chips/mobo?

We cannot really pick the right ram without knowing the model number of the board you are buying.

I looked at the AMD site. I can't seem to absorb the diffs of X2 or FX, or ?

I noticed that Newegg has a 5000 for $313, and a 5200 for $287. Then I noticed the 512 vs 1meg. Hmmmm...

Looks like I will go with Intel. There isn't that much of a price diff. Now all I have to do is find a MB for a Conroe.
