hi, I have partition magic, and wonder if I can deminish the xp partition and make a second partition and load kubuntu on it

thanks, if it says 'use available free space' and I have split the harddrive into two partitions(one half ntfs running XP, the other half unallocated) will it load on the unalocated partition only and not mess up my XP

Yep, but it will overwrite the master boot loader with the superour GRUB boot loader, if Kubuntu isn't stupid it will presetup GRUB with an option to boot winodws XP, if not its an easy fix to do :) just type sudo fdisk -l (thats an ell) in a console, and post back the results and I'll guide you through the rest.
However I would use the custom paritioner to make sure you have two Linux partitions, a root partiton (/) and a home partiton (/home), makes changing distros so much easier.
